Hi myLotters! I've been meaning to get a DSLR for a long time but can't decide on the brand to choose. I've done my researching over the internet on what's the best camera for beginners but still am confused. A lot of reviews focus on the different models for a specific brand and some comparisons of the camera i can't fully understand. I was about to get a Canon for beginners but after i got home to rethink it I was more intrigued with Nikon but the store in our place doesn't have one on display. Even if I go out of my way to see other stores I might end up undecided. I wish you can enlighten me MyLotters, so i can start with the brand then the model, which brand of DSLR camera is better and why?

I like you spent a lot of time online debating what to get. Eventually I went into the store and spent some 2 hours with a clerk there trying out every model they had on display and finally narrowed it down. I got the Nikon D5000 because it is the cross over between the beginner camera and the real professional DSLR. No one can tell you what to get this is what I found out. I had to play with them all and the woman there kept asking what I didn't like about each camera, when you find a flaw in a camera, like I don't like the menus on cannon then that just closed out all the cannons in the store. Then there was the issue of price, so sony was a little high. Weight came into play, so while the Olumpus was small it was extremely heavy and just didn't seem as practical as it could be. You have to think about what you are using it for. I knew that I was going to be traveling a lot so it needed to be light. My hands are on the small side so I couldn't use something that as too big. You have to find what is right for you because this is a very big investment and you are going to want to get the most out of it.

Thank you for that insight runi! I also want to have a lighter camera for easy access and I too would want to have a DSLR that can still be useful if ever I'd get serious with photography (also to lessen the future expense). So far the store owner where I saw the Canon was suggesting to get a Canon because they were a service center for it. That's an effective sales talk, I thought. He also said that it would be hard to find Nikon parts and the service center. But still I'd rather invest on the durability of the brand than the availability of the service center because there would be no use for it if it was durable. That's 1 point for Nikon.

I'm not saying you have to get a nikon or even a cannon there are so many other brands out there, you really have to consider what you like. Even with parts it doesn't matter what you have, ebay has everything ;)

i'm kinda hesitant about buying online though. even if they have cheaper price than in-store.

When it comes to choosing a basic set up keep this in mind, what every camera you buy will be cheep compared to the money you will spend on new lens. My recommendation is Canon because that is what I use but Nikon is also a very good camera and there are all the rest. Third party lens are becoming more affordable and unless your are shooting professionally the third party lens are almost as good as the Canon or Nikon. Both Canon and Nikon spend a lot of money to make most of the Film Lens (mainly auto focus and Image Stabilized) compatible with both digital and film. What ever Camera you purchase, Canon or Nikon, when you go to replace it you will still have the lens to use with your new Camera. You are buying more than a Camera you are buying a camera system and Canon and Nikon have an excellent track record, while many others are new to the filed.

After responding to you I found an article on buying DSLR that I read when researching for my First DSLR. This Professional Photographer suggested that you buy a cheaper model or even one model older and take the savings and put it toward lens upgrades. Many of the upgrades that are made are minor but do effect the price and the result is that you can save money without sacrificing that much in the ability of the camera. Many times an upgrade is more megapixels, or increased speed or increased ISO. the other thing that he suggested was to consider a refurbished camera. Often these will carry the same warranty or can be covered with an extended warranty. Good Luck

a pleasant day giggles, with reference to your main topic, ask for me, different brands have different characteristics. as it also relies on your preference. however, personally, i am using a canon brands. all of my stuffs for photography are all from canon. but, i am not closing my doors to other brands, hence, i am also looking forward to use other brands such as nikon and lumix.

hi airasheila, i know that there are other brands aside from canon, sony, nikon and samsung but so far those are the only cameras available in stores (in most stores in our place). it's difficult to decide if you don't see the actual camera and i wish i'd see others brands in stores so i can check it out.

I don't really think what brand you chose matters that much, but what you like. Have you any friends with SLRs you can borrow to try? Or check with the shop, sometimes they'll let people try them out for a deposit. I have a canon DSLR and a friend of mine (my travelling buddy) has a Nikon DSLR. I prefer mine, but that's mainly because it is a much better camera (more expensive, more features etc). Or you could try to find a used one. I bought my second analog SLR online and my two first DSLRs. Good buys, all of them. I got the last one new because I use it so much, the last one the trigger button got stuck :-)

Dear friend, I own a digital camera Olympus FE-25 with a objective of 10 megapixels. My brother bought it about 3 years ago at a price of 90 € (approximately $ 120). Although I had never tried other cameras until now, I consider this purchase a very apt. The camera is small, easily manageable and above all very easy to use. To me this seems a good choice for beginners. Of course the experts of photography would claim something more! I do not think however that this model of Olympus is still in production, because as I said previously, was taken almost 3 years ago. However for that amount you can find nice machines just for beginners.

the first ever (film) camera we had was an olympus and it was durable, even if it had other stronger competitors. i just wish i can go back to japan because they have all the choices of the brands available in store and when i say all it's all.
