Eating out of boredom?

I have found when I have a day where I have very little activity, very little that needs to be done, I fill it with food. It's not usually a lot at a time - a piece of cheese here, a handful of potato chips there - but I know it adds up to more calories by the end of the day than I probably want to know. Do you have this habit? I try to avoid things I shouldn't eat - cookies, candies, the like - and stick with more "healthy" foods - fruits, veggies, Swiss cheese instead of cheddar, crackers instead of chips - but it doesn't always work that way. Do you have this habit, too?

Oh yes I have to believe this is why there are allot of overweight people. People don't know what to do with themselves when they have down time so the first thing you think of is to eat. Bowl of potatoe chips, a few cookies, soda, you name it it adds up. Next thing you know all you have done in a sitting of relax time is eat eat eat. Bad habit and really hard to break!

I sometimes snack even if I'm not really hungry. I wish that I was more in the habit of doing so, since I really do need the calories. If I put on 20 or 25 pounds, I'd still be thin. I know that's not the case for most people, though. If you are trying to keep from gaining weight, this habit is going to sabotage your efforts. You may want to start chewing gum when you get the urge to snack out of boredom. Or, make a point of diverting your attention to another activity--go pin things to your boards on Pinterest, play an online game, read a book, go for a walk, do stretches, post to myLot. There is almost always something to do.

Yes I indeed have this bad habit as well. It's one thing I totally hate about winter, I spend a great amount of time bored and in the house and the kids are always eating so you don't think twice about it. Though I've been trying to be good and buy healthy things so like this week Aldi has grapes, strawberries, apples on sale. I will go there atleast 2x while this sale is on once around the first day or so of the sale and then on the last day of the sale. The last time they had it on I bought close to 20lbs in one week of grapes!!

I also have the same issue, especially at work when there's nothing to do. I tried bringing healthy snacks like fruit but when I run out of stock, I still eat those unhealthy snacks. I gained extra calories without really needing them. It's a bad habit and I am trying to change it.

Hi crimsonladybug, I think you have to be careful about what and when you eat. Some stuff like potato chips and candies etc may not be too good for you. Piling up on calories may make you put on unwanted weight which you may have trouble getting rid of later. So the best thing is not to start. I avoid snacking and I take regular meals with moderate amount. However, sometimes I do eat more if I feef like it but this is only rarely. If you find yourself snacking on these unhealthy food you have to break this habit and you can do it by being disciplined and motivated. The internet is full of tips on how to do that.

Yes, I do have this habit. Mostly when I'm bored. I quit work to stay home with my granddaughter. She's in kindergarten so if I don't keep busy, I snack. I don't always eat the healthy foods. Sometimes I do, but mostly it's junk food. My favorites are chocolate covered peanuts, chocolate stars, and soft taco shells with cheese melted on them. I try to eat healthy snacks, but it doesn't always work. When I do eat the healthy ones it's apples, oranges, and those baby snap peas.

Not so much I out boredom for me. I have 2 kids. I find that i nibble on what they don't finish. That whole old fashioned idea of cleaning your plate, I guess. Either way the calories add up there too!

Wow, maybe you should then find a hobbie to fullfill that area. It seems you can't be bored so maybe if you take these moments of free time to study or practice exercises this could get better.

I had tried to do it. I ate when I was bored. The food that I ate were mostly junk foods. This kind of habit is so bad especially if you're an emotional eater. Eating foods out of boredom can helps us gain weight.

Hi crimsonladybug, Oh I hear ya! I used to be terrible for eating when bored and that is why I gained some weight that I really wasn't happy with and it didn't suit me. I tend to walk a lot so don't beat myself up unmercifully over it but do feel pangs of guilt all the same. However, I have very little plans tomorrow and so am thinking that I'm due a really lazy day and if that also means eating more than I should because I've nothing else to do then so be it!! Enjoy it!! Once it's only occasional it's no biggie really. IrishGal77 :)

yes I have this bad habbits too especially now that I don't have a job and just trapped at home doing household chores. I eat much of that junk foods all the time especially when I'm devastated, sad and stressed. No matter how I try to focus on eating healthy stuff I always go back eating those delicious junk because I love them (chocolates, candies and cakes).haysss..I think its what you call addiction and food for comfort.

Yes, I love eating especially if I am on my rest day. hahaha. Wish I could also break eating unhealthy foods but I cannot help it. My palate are stronger than my self-discipline. I love to eat ice cream, chips & soda :)

Of course I am into that especially if that is the only thing that I can found here at home. I can't get rid with that. But now I am going to plan a meal especially for healthy snacks I just hope I can still manage it.
