Sad news at The Lion's Den

Our oldest feral, Star, has been sick for a long time - couple of years anyway. She got pretty bad and we had been building her up. The roomie wanted to know if Star was strong enough to do surgery if that was what she needed. Turned out it was cancer, a tumor under her tongue. We decided that the kindest thing to do was to not let her suffer any longer. So, today we let her go to the Bridge where she is no longer afraid, no longer in pain and is once again happy and healthy. I'm sure 'Nado is there to give her a good bath and Nino will then give her another one! Then the pair of them will take her around and show her all the sights! So, our sweet Shooting Star will be happy with her big cat friends at the Rainbow Bridge.

I am so sorry for your loss. Even for doing a humane thing, it's a hard and sad thing to do. It is comforting to know though, that Star will not be alone and will have her other cat friends up there as well.

Star LOVED her 'Nado, she was really at a loss for a while without him. So I'm sure that as soon as she got there he was demanding to know where she'd been!

Thanks, knowing that she had cancer, we just couldn't put her through any more pain. It was only the kind thing to let her go.

Thanks, I kind of suspected the roomie was being hopeful, but I didn't expect cancer!

So I'm assuming this means to you her to sleep and she is in kitty heaven. I am so sorry that you had to let her go, but I am happy that she is no long in pain or having to continuously be treated for the illness. It's hard to let our loving babies go like that, but sometimes when we don't, it is for ourselves because it's so hard for us. But it's the best thing for them. It's hard to make these decisions. Bless you.

Yes, we did put her to sleep, the only way we could've treated her was to totally remove her lower jaw and feed her through a tube, and that wouldn't have been possible because she was so feral.

I'm so sorry to hear of her passing, it's quite a sad thing when out animals even ferals have to move on. Have been there many times, it never gets any easier.

We are kind of a weird lot here, we catch baby ferals and they grow up in the house, still feral, but safe. Star was rescued from a construction site and was friendly on her own terms, that's more than the 3 youngest are, they are seriously feral!

It has been quite a while since we have had a really sick kitty. I still miss the ones that are no longer here. They each have had a special place in our family.

We drove to Buda to pick up Star, not as far as San Antonio to get Tony... but she was very beautiful and shy.

cancer is taking to many of our loved ones human and pets. My dog Bear though, the vet said he had extreme arthritis and he was also allergic to something we couldnt figure out. itched constantly, and seem to hurt a lot could hardly walk, etc. so i let the vet put him down rather then see him suffer more after nearly a year of all this. now he will be there to meet us when we go.

I am so sad to hear you had to make that choice. It is a kind choice though. I had to make that choice with a rescue dog I had adopted and had for 4 years in January. She had a stroke and was not able to function after that. My thoughts are with you...it's never easy to lose part of the family and that is exactly what they become to us.

We had Star for 11 years and while she wasn't much of a "pet" she was very decorative...

So sorry to hear of yor loss. I had to put mine down due to cancer also and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. Try and take a little comfort in knowing yu saved her pain and it was the right thing to do!

I do know that, but it isn't ever easy... as of now (and until April 1st 2012) we have no double digit cats - Taj will be 10 on April 1st.

She was only 11, but she was found at a construction site, and then the guy who rescued her (she bit him pretty bad for a baby kitten) his dogs almost ate her, so his step-daughter, the roomie's niece, called us and said "I have your Christmas present, but you have to come get it." After explaining she would have to get my permission to introduce another cat into the household, we drove down and got her.

You can't really comfort this kind of loss, but knowing that we did the right thing for her is all we can take from it. However, Oliver stayed with the roomie last night and washed her face

How appropriate that the song "crying time" came on the radio when I read this. Those old guys at Baby Boomer Radio are psychic! Anyway, I know how hard it is to lose a pet. Big hugs to you, roomies, and the fur-family here and there.

I saw a new Star in our night sky, now I know that it is the beauty of your Star. Each night I will look up at it and tell her that you love her and miss her. It seems like right now the people in my life are suffering from cancer. Bill's son has cancer, our neighbor has cancer, another close friend has cancer and you lost your wonderful Star to cancer. You would think with all the cancer all these years they would figure out the cause and the cure. My condolences over your loss. When I lose Murphy I am going to be a basket case!! She has a mass on her tongue, but it isn't cancerous. I had the mass removed once and it was tested and wasn't cancer. Fortunately it hasn't spread and she is doing fine. But at 18 I am not about to put her through any unnecessary trauma by trying to take her to the vet or leave her with them to have surgery to remove the mass. I have the feeling that taking her to the vet would be an overload for her as she goes bananas when I try to take her from the house. She loves her home so much that she is terrified that I am going to give her away. I can't scare her like that, so I do her shots and whatever vet work I can do. A neighbor is a vet so he stops by with the rabies shots when she needs them. Nothing like a spoiled little girl Siamese! My heart is with you and Star, as well as my prayers.

I wish I had a picture on the computer, but I haven't figured out the picture files yet... Star was a snowshoe Siamese... not all that spoiled, but very tiny and easily upset because she was so feral.

Hi Elic, Awww! so sorry to hear about Star gone to Rainbow Bridge, it is so sad when one of your babies had to go, I lost my Thomas in December and still not got over it, I miss him dearly, he was always following me around the house and very playful, mind you he was fourteen years old and was quite lively till he had problems with his lungs, I still have my other cat Baby, she is getting on as well and sleeps all the time, but she is such a fuss pot. Hope you are ok and sending healing love and hugs to you, your roomie and all the furbies, big hugs. Tamara xxxxx

My Scamp was 14, don't know what killed him, but I loved him dearly. Star had been sick for a while, and if we had known it was cancer, we might've let her go sooner...

I am so sorry for your loss! That is a very difficult decision to make, even when it is in their best interest. We had to make that decision for one of our dogs. He had cancer, and we chose to have surgery, and the tumor was removed. The doctor thought that he had gotten it all, but a year later we realized that it was back in the same spot. By that time, it had spread throughout his body without us even realizing it. He was in obvious pain (he had not been previously), and we decided that it was best to let him go, especially since the doctor did not think he would make it through another operation.

You had another year with your dog. If it would've given Star another year and a good quality of life, we'd've done it too, but it would've required removing her jaw and then tube feeding her, and that couldn't be done, so it was the best thing to do to ease her out of her pain.
2 Mar 12
i am sorry to hear this i know how much you adore your cats, just as i do, it's always painful to let them go but it's the kindest thing to help them on their way from the pain and the suffering, when star gets there Lottie will be there waiting too, i am sure all 3 cats will be washing her down together.
