Thankfully the "Powers that be" have come to their senses and the UK is fielding Engelbert Humperdinck as our entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. He couldn't sing in the 60s and I see no reason why he should have improved. Although at the grand old age of 75 I give him credit for trying. Eurovision is the epitome of what it means to be European. Full of second rate acts representing mostly economically bust countries who only vote for their friends. There is nothing remotely musical about the whole show. However, it costs more than £20M to host and the UK, which is more broke than most, cannot afford such nonsense. Fielding "Humpers" means that we are guarnateed to lose - again. We have the Olympics to host and that will be another pile of our money down the drain whilst better prepared athletes from other nations enjoy the facilities and beat us hollow.

Bet you watch it though! I say every year I won't watch it (Eurovision) but always give in. I believe Englebert is a major star worldwide so if the Europeans don't vote for him then they really DO hate our guts. Apparently, Ireland are fielding Jedward for the second year running.

Ha, I'm the opposite! I never say that I won't watch it. I look forward to it for months, and then I get very upset if ever I miss it by accident! :(

Englebert Humperdink...really? What the hay? I remember my father was a huge fan of his back in the day. I never particularly cared for his music but I didn't thnk he was that bad. For me, it was more the type of music thata he sang that I didn't care for. I thought he had a good voice. Then again, I was like 12 or maybe younger when he was so popular here. The only song that readily comes to mind is Release Me. At 75...can't even imagine it. must be older people making these choices?

Ha! I didn't realize that he was still alive, either. But that could be said of a lots of aging entertainers who are probably dying (no pun intended) for a gig. What were the other choices?

I know it. I haven't so much as heard his name mentioned in years! Brings back some memories of hearing my parents play his albums.

He was indeed a Tom Jones wannabe and not a patch on him. My surgery is on the 14th march. They moved me from one hospital to another so the clock restarted. I cannot wait for it all to be over. Thank you for remembering.

He should have stuck with the name Arnold George Dorsey. Dorsey was always a great name in music. Perhaps Humperdinks musical ability would have improved over the years. Engelbert Humperdink just doesn't and never did cut it. lol

Hi there p1kef1sh, I think the humperdink is not the representative type he is like those old men who still tries to act young, but hey who am i to judge hell i cant even sing a local folk song right, anyway i hope your country get someone else with more class and is more about the culture of the country.

Hi p1kef1sh, Never hear of that fella but surely he can't be any worse than (dare I say it) Jedward!!!! Ireland are doomed again this year methinks. Bring back the olden days of the Eurovision I say, countries sang in their own languages and really represented what they were all about, individually. Countries voted fairly (for the most part). You must be very young. Trust me you have not missed anything by never having heard of him! Eurovision ought to be called "Eastern Blocvision" these days.

I listened to the song. I quite liked it! I was impressed with his voice. Not the best but I don't know anyone else his age who could do better! Saying that, I think that having someone enter Eurovision who actually has the slightest suggestion of any talent would surely secure a loss! I don't recall anything good ever winning Eurovision (except one year when some weird rock band won I think. Or did I imagine that?)

He is 75??? Ah, well that could explain it because I guess that he still has to work as the pension age has gone up and maybe he cost a lot less than other younger and more popular artists I too remember when the Eurovision Song Contest was important and followed by everyone. Nowadays I think it is not even worth the bother. it is not even broadcast in Italy.

Reading through the comments here I see that you have an 'engagement' tomorrow. Goodluck! When you come back let us know who won - if it has already taken place

Italy has the right idea. Terry Wogan used to commentate on it and he was the funnest thing there. But even he has retired - unlike Humpers!

Hi P1key, how are you doing? Yes, the newsreader last night seemed to think it surreal that Engelbert Humperdinck is going up against Jedward. But with Eurovision, nothing surprises me! It's an eclectic musical mix of randomness, and anything goes! I know the voting is a sham, and "music" is often a loose term, but I think that's kind of what I love about it. And I do miss Terry Wogan, but I still look forward to it every year and it doesn't usually disappoint. I love the cynicism in your post, I'm not looking forward to the craziness of the Olympics either, not sure we will cope very well. And yes, I'm sure that old Engelbert was a very strategic choice by the "Powers that Be"! I wonder if Ireland is thinking along the same lines with Jedward again...

They might well be. I don't think that I have ever heard Jedward sing but by all accounts I haven't missed a great deal. I am going into hospital on 14th march for a partial nephrectomy (lump of kidney off) then home to convalesce. I have had superb care and have reached the point where if a stranger in scrubs or a white coat say "strip" I will do it in a heartbeat! LOL.

I agree about the modesty thing. When I was diagnosed with high blood pressure a year ago I made a video where I took off my top and took my BP as a health warning. This time I might be slightly more discreet as I shall have a hole just at the top of my groin where they will have extracted the "lump". Don't want to frighten the horses or give elderly ladies an attack of the vapours!

I remember when they were in the X-Factor, they used to always give them songs where they had to 'talk', rather than actually sing. And there was lots of jumping around, colourful costumes and loads of money spent on special effects with fire and things, perhaps to detract from the fact that they was no singing involved, even though it was a singing contest... I'm glad you've got a date for your surgery, and that you've had such great care. That is a very important thing. It's also good that you're so comfortable stripping! At least that's something less for you to worry about! Modesty is definitely over-rated I say. :)

That's the spirit sunshine. Nothing like a bit of positivity to brighten up the gloom of another grey, overcast England day! Yep, we will flog you in the Olympics hopefully and then the Ashes as well. Engelbert Humperdinck just has to win due to his name I reckon. Wonder how many albums he sold due to people's curiosity about how a man with a name like that might sound?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I wonder that too Bill. Now the Ashes, that's something we can win... maybe...perhaps...if your guys are having an off day....LOL. You are welcome to the Olympics. saw a house yesterday with a HUGE Australian flag in the lounge window. Saves on glass I guess.....

Aussies have a habit of placing their flag up in windows. Particularly when overseas or around Australia Day here. It is a recent thing over the last decade or two.

now that the contest is over, I want to know who did you root for? The Best songs for me are from Macedonia, Germany and Turkey... Though I didnt mind the Russian Grannies winning because they were adorable and they have a very catchy song and inspiring story. I dont mind Sweden winning in the end, The song is also great and Loreen is amazing, most singers lipsynchs during dance numbers cos its hard singing while dancing but she can belt high notes even if she is singing.

Thats proberly all true, the propblem with the Eurovision is that countries like the scandanvians ones tend to vote for each other so that why its not really contest. But i do agree that its a waste of money and who regardless of who ever wins no one is really bothered.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I always thought that it was the Easterrn ones that tended to vote for each other. Whovere it is, the money is wasted. Use it for jobs instead.
