Has Another Person's Misfortune Caused You to Give Up a Vice

I have smoked Newport cigarettes on and off since I was 15. In the past 12 years, I have found myself in some pretty stressful situations and as a ritual, I would smoke 2-3 cigs per night after a long day of work, with a cocktail of course. I never was a pack or more per day but had some concerns when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure (which I attributed to change in career, diet and home life)a few years ago. I now take Omega 3 and Vitamin B and for the past year, have adjusted my diet so that I retain less fluid/weight.
Over the weekend, someone I've known for years had a stroke. 36 years old and a single parent to three children. Not sure if she smoked, had a bad diet or was overweight but I did find out that she was on drugs to the point where she could not pass an employer's urine screen.
Though we were not close, I am still shocked. Since then, I have not smoked nor had the urge to pig out. I have some issues that I'm resolving as I type but there is no desire to have a cigarette or anything similar to a Newport.
Has this ever happened to you?
