My egg burst!

I was shocked. I've always boiled my eggs the same way, in a pot of cold water then let it boil for about 15 minutes and the egg would be a nice, hard-boiled egg. So I was sitting here, and I heard this loud pop and I went into the kitchen and sure enough the egg was cracked and there was a bit of the white stuff floating on the water. So I dumped it out, carefully dug out the egg (the yoke haven't hardened yet) and fried it up a bit until the yoke hardened, then proceeded to make myself an egg salad sandwich. It was still tasty, though. Has that happened before to any of you? I thought it was funny.

Wait, are you saying you boil your eggs for 15 minutes? Because I put my eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, and then I place a lid on top and remove from the heat for 15 minutes. I have made my eggs this way for years and never had an explosion or the green ring around the yolk. Though I am sure it was more fun having the exploding eggs..lol

No, they are put into cold water, then I put the heat on, so the heat itself is on for 15 mins, so right from the time I turn on the burner to the time where I remove the egg from the heat will total to 15 minutes. Nah it didn't actually explode yellow goo or anything ha ha it would make a good youtube video! :-p Just one section popped off but the white part was still protecting the yolk so it was all cool.

Really Ricki? it could be because you are further north, but I don't know.. Masihi, so you put it on the burner and start timing before it boils? That is strange it burst like then then, because it take a long time for water to boil, at least here in Northern America..lol

Carmela, the way I prefer is to bring them to a boil, put the lid on, boil three minutes, let set fifteen. Very similar to what you do and with same results.

My eggs burst from time to time. It happens when the egg is too cold or when I boil it too long. I never boil an egg for that long a time as you did. I use a very small pot so I don´t have to heat lots of water. I don´t mind eggs that burst, except if I´m doing something where the egg has to look nice. That´s why I always put one extra egg to boil, just in case. The extra egg is always used.

I have heard of eggs bursting like that, but only when all the water evaporates. As for me, I never use salt, but I use eggs at room temperature every time I remember.

Hmm...so the general idea I'm gathering from the posts is to salt the water, and make sure the eggs are room temperature before putting them into the cold water. Did your eggs burst like explode with yolks hitting the ceiling? :-p Ya, I know silly question, but one poster actually said that has happened to her!

Oh dear, I know I shouldn't laugh but wow! That's a nice romantic mess for the 2 of you, I hope he was able to clean it off before the stuff dried because that stuff turns to rubber practically, so hard to clean after that stage.

I have had that happen to me...I find if I add a dash of white vinegar to the water, it doesn't happen.

Yes, that has definitely happened to me. The worst part, was that I was standing by the stove when it happened and apparently I put a bit to much water so when the egg decided to pop, a good amount of boiling water popped all over my arm, luckily it was me and not my children. And my hubby being the hubby is always is, instead of helping me starts laughing at me, I got so angry and then after a few minutes of hearing him laugh I started laughing as well.

It does happen to me sometimes as I always put the eggs in the water and forget about them and they end up breaking apart in the water. I usually just leave them and let them fully cook and use them for my egg salad sandwich anyway.

I've forgotten my eggs in the past and the pot ran dry and part of the egg shell got scorched and left a black/brownish spot but it didn't really do anything to the inside of the egg, just made the white part a little rubbery so I cut that part off but overall they were still yummy :-)
