Broke into 2

Every morning I clean my ears with a Q-tip. One morning I wasn't paying attention and stuck it in my ear a little to far. POP! I hear and next thing you know I have blood and stuff coming out of my ear. I didn't think nothing of it until the next day when the pain was horrible.
I went to the doctors and they looked in my ear and told me I had burst my eardrum into 2. The pain I was feeling was the water that had gotten into my ear from my morning shower. OUCH!
Here I am a few months later, the doctors have told me the ear drum has healed but it healed with a very large scar in the middle from where it broke. Daily I hear a gurgling sound in my ear, it's so annoying!
Has anyone else ever done this?

No I have never done anything like that. I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to you. That would be aweful. I'm glad though that it is healing well. That would be so painful. I don't use q-tip for my ears. I'm always afraid if I do something would happen. So many people do use q-tip for their ears. It even says on the package not to stick in ear canal but a lot of people still do.

In all the years that I have been using Q-tips this is the first time I have ever done anything so bad.

Glitznglitter I'm sorry that this happened to you. It is such an aweful thing. I hope that it continues to heal well and that your ear drum doesn't have a lot of problems over time. That is such a scary thing. It makes us remember how we really do value our hearing.

I was told that nothing should be put in the ear but the elbow!

Yes I have heard that as well, unfortunately I am not a contortionist to get my elbow to my ear therefore Q-tips have to do.

You have a great sense of humor. Since laughter is a good medicine, may you heal fast.

hi Glitznglitter ouch that makes me imagine pain in my own ear. Having learned from others who had similar experiences I have not
pushed the q tip in like that as I learned better. I hope your ear will get better.Did you go back to your doctor about the gurgling sound? I would just be sure there is not more wrong and if there is something he could do about it.I can well imagine it would be very annoying.Using baby Q tips is an excellent idea and please do not push way in as that can damage more than just the ear drum,it cold impair your hearing too.so if the gurgling does not stop see your doctor again and good luck. G od bless.

Thank you Hatley, Yes I have been back a couple of times, the seal that the ear canal normal has is broke, although the skin has been fixed between the scar tissue which now appears in my ear as two pieces (don't quite understand that but that's what the doc said), and the break in the seal of the canal the gurgling I hear will probably always be there. Some days are definately better than others, but for now I have to deal with the gurgling. It's worse when it's windy as I can really hear the wind. I also have to be careful not to get the inner part of my ear wet as any water that manages to get in behind the natural seal which is no longer there will cause pain. So no more swimming under water for me.
Definately need to be careful with Q-tips.

This has never happened to me personally, but I know a couple of people that it has happened to. I clean my ears daily with a Q-tip also, even though the doctors don't recommend it. I can only imagine the amount of pain you were in!

yes it was a horrible feeling to this day it's not back to way it once was. We now use baby Q-tips in this house as you can't push them in as far as the adult ones.

I cannot imagine the pain you have gone through! All I can picture in my head is "ouch"! If that happens to me, I would panic so much. So how are you now? Do you have problems with your hearing, I mean do you now wear hearing aids? Hope you are fine

Well, I sure hope that your ear will go back to its normal state. It is hard to continuously hear gurgling sound as if you are underwater.

most of the time when i am cleaning my ears out i am paying more attention to other things including my 2 and 4 yr old fighting all the time. i think i will make sure i do this before they get up because it is sounding like it needs my attention 100%. my daughter use to try and clean her ears by herself (she just wanted to be like us) i am so glad this never happend....
do you know if the gugle sound will ever go away?? i think that it would drive me absolutely insane having to deal with that day in and day out.
How are the baby Q-tips working for you? i use those on the kids and i am thinking about switching so this never happens to me and i was curious if it helps ne.

Oh be sure to really be careful I wasn't paying attention I was paying attention to an arguement that was happening in the house between my two teen girls and accidently just pushed to far. Its definately painful and the gurgle sound is absolutely annoying.

That would be very painful. I hate to know that you have had this happen as I am sure that you will always hear that sound. I am glad that I have never had that happen to me.

Wow! I have never done that before! They did tell me once that cleaning my ears with Q-tips would cause me to get ear infections though. They said that it actually packs the ear wax down in there and it will harden I can hardly keep myself from doing it though. I had always done it.

Yes the doctor told me that if you have to clean your ears it should only be the outside of the ear and you shouldn't push the qtip in the ear canal for that very reason your pushing down the wax which acts as a barrier to protect the ear you could compact it and again cause damage.

I don´t use a Q-tip for my ears because I have heard about people with your problem. I hope this will change with time and you don´t end up with an unpaired audition. Take care!

Not with a broken eardrum. But a few years back I could not hear from my left ear and it was painful. My doctor told me that using cotton buds pushed wax deeper inside blocking hearing. She told me to refrain from cleaning my ears for one month. I thought it strange. Seems like having superclean ears could be a disadvantage also as it removes the protective covering.

I was told that after I did my damage to my ear drum. For some people who work in places that carry allot of dust and debris it is recommened to have your ears candled it pulls everything out even the wax, if you ever do it look at what it pulls out although its nasty you would be amazed at what your ear actually catches and protects the inner workings from.

hi
I have a similar situation with you but not to the extent that caused blood running out. however I did clean it daily and caused to harm my ears and I did hear something like bees buzzing inside, d sting is quite bearable. so my doctor told me not to clean my ears daily and she instructed me f ever I could not help myself, just clean my ears only the area near or just the entrance of my ears. your ears will be fine in time. just be extra careful when cleaning it.

No, but thank you for sharing your story. I reminded my sons as soon as I read this. They are teenagers and always seem to be in a hurry in the morning before school. They also use Q-tip every morning and I just want to make sure they pay attention when they do. Hope you'll recover completely soon.

Thank you! I am learning to cope with it, at least the piercing pain that I had when I first did it is gone now. This pain is a little more bearable, just really really annoying.

Oh wow. I have never had that happen to me but sounds really painful. Guess ill be paying more attention when cleaning my ears out. I thought that if you did that you wouldnt be able to hear out that ear anymore. Can you still hear things other then the gurgling sound every morning? Just wondering. Thanks for the advise on paying attention.

Oh yeah I can still hear out of it but the gurgle sound is always there so it almost sounds like my hearing isn't right on the station if you know what I mean it's a little fuzzy but I can still hear.
