Would you mind people if they look at you eating by your hands?

Hi, I was in a turo-turo (eatery) yesterday and there was no spoon provided in that effin eatery. I had no spoon to stir my cup of milk. I looked at some people present near the coffee, milk and cream table. I started to look and look at them going back and forth to the crew asking for a spoon. Nobody gave me because of no availability. A certain guy who has just finished drinking in his mug lent to me his spoon. I took and ate pancit (fried / dry noodles) using only my bare hands. It was the first time I experienced eating pancit using my hands. I felt uncomfortable and awkward noticing some eaters looking at me and I did not mind them all. In my mind, these people have nothing to do to offer in my hungry stomach. I know God wants this to happen to me as part of my learning experience and I consider this normal.

Hi,
As the other people said eating with your hands is something very normal. It is part of our behaviour. Do you think that your parents had never eat with their hands?
Actually, eating with your hands is good for your organism, as too clean spoons and knifes may damadge your stomach. You need bacterias for better life.

yuck and ugh some bacteria like ecoli are not good for
better life as they can put you in the hospital. what if
'the eater had come from a restroom on a toilet break'
and forgot to wash his or her hands? some bacteria make
us very ill.

dear brother,
I wonder why the eatery don't have utensils.
I will be a bit annoyed if they can't give me something to stir my coffee...(duh)
I am patient and I am not rude- but if ignored, oh well (hehehe)
Anyway, there are foods that doesn't need any spoon or fork, but with noodles, okay give me a chopstick maybe it will do (hahahaha)
but, for goodness sake- can't they just provide something to use :x

Hi Sis!
They have complete kitchen utensils and they usually provide even if you don't ask. It ran out of stock because they were swamped with lots of eaters fresh from the parade. I was on my field study at that time and I couldn't spare more time to search for another eatery. I was very hungry so I just ordered the pancit and I did not fall in the queuee for a complete meal. If I waited for at least a minute or two, probably I've got one nice fork and spoon sanitized.
HI hatley..
oh, well at least i remain calmed at that time...

Eating pancit using your hands is certainly not normal. If you ask me, that restaurant you ate in sucks. They should have enough utensils for customers. If I were you, I'll never eat there again. I would have demanded for at least a fork in order to eat.

I do not mind people eating with hand because from early childhood I love to eat with hand according to me eating with hand looks more comfortable to me than with fork and spoon, but it looks terribly odd when some one eats with his bare hand in a restaurant.

I don't blame us Filipino's for having us culture like that because we inherit it from our ancestors. I do used my hands eating only when I'm home and I make it sure that I totally clean and wash my hands with anti-bacterial soap or hand wash. It is very fun eating bare hands specially with our favorite food fried rice and dried fish with tomato (tuyo) specially in breakfast time. But I just thought maybe it is time for us to change this kind of habit we have. Now a days there are so many bacteria and even diseases that we really don't know where it came from. But one thing I am sure about that , bacteria came from what we intake into our mouth specially food and water. We must be wise and health concious now a days since bacteria is all around us. I'm not againts eating with our hands I'm still enjoying doing it. But make it sure that our hands are very clean before eating.

Hi sabado,
I just don’t care because I have the habit of eating by hand since childhood. In our state people prefer to eat with their hand rather than using a spoon. It may be because of the type of food we prefer to eat. There is nothing wrong to eat by using our hand and I felt that is the best way to treat our stomach well. In our place nobody would stare to you for eating without spoon. However in case of noodles all prefer to depend on spoon.

Hello Sreekala,
The noodles that I had eaten was a fried one. These kind of noodles are popular in the east. It may be made and produced out from grains particularly rice, potatoes, tapiocas or cassavas, bananas or any other crops that contains flour or wheat when processed. I'd like to clarify that this differs from the ones with soup or watery that you have to fish out the noodles using a spoon. However, I have to give you my hundred percent agreement that we both believe people may vary from places to places in terms of eating. People do have each own preference in terms of eating irrespective of each and ones nationality. I don't used to eating by my barehands except for some significant event where only breads and fried or broasted meats are available.

hi sabado hi culture and customs thats why I love mylot so much. I am an American squirming in my seat over eating noodles with your fingers. we do eat chicken with our hands and sandwiches but wer gouchy stuff you would get your fingers all yucky oh thats my American opinion and I do respect your customs of eating stuff without silver ware. some things we also eat with our fingers like corn on the cob but other things we just use utensils for as it is our custom. I must not make fun of other's customs as thats their right.I have noticed some of my Filipino friends here use a spoon in one hand but a fork in the other. I have a hard time using my left hand but they are very precise and exquisite with their movements.
I learn so many new things here every day and open up and broaden my mind too to accept the differences and love the users.

i think hatley that with regards to your custom and tradition as an american are not new to me. must all of us in general if you just knew it. you ask me to cite all your 50states then i will with only 2 or 3 breathes intervals.. see? lol i can also tell you the thirteen original union upon citing the ones i just first mentioned.. lol and we have millions of our people there that possibly you've happened to have relationship with some at least once in your life experience. to tell you, i have lots of relatives there. all of them have dual citizenship.
like i said it was really an uncomfortable experience and i felt awkward by the commotions of those eaters who noticed me eating by my bare hands.

That must be uncomfortable. It's okay if you were in your home. But in a public place? On the contratry, in Mang Inasal restaurant, (), if you are familiar with that place, its okay to eat with your hands. But in an eatery wherein its not normal to ear with your hands, I think its not comfortable for me. I did not say inappropriate though, just uncomfortable. Oh well, you must have been really hungry that time.

Oh yeah that is considerably thought anyway and you do not need to write it in details. I know exactly what you mean. To tell you honestly, I was very hungry at that time that I did not have my supper and breakfast. Not that I skipped intentionally but because of school and job that I am tackling once, I slept early and woke early the next morning, ran to school and that's it.

The eatery owner must have at least provided you with a spoon or fork for you to use. What you've experienced is a little uncomfortable since everyone is using spoon/fork, although I am also sometimes using my hands when eating outside, I still feel that the eatery must provide you with those stuff.

well en like i said it was really a flat on the floor scenario at that time. i did not wait for my turn to be served, i did not fall in line for the main menu, i've chosen the short order which is not an mto (made to order) and there, i pointed it i got it.. sadly, the backup/backsink man perhaps got himself knockedout by his own tarantism! no untensils ready...
you may not know what i'm talking about but if you used to work in a fast food chain before, i may not need to explain everything...

It is okay and perfectly normal to use your hand to eat your noodles. Some of my friends in Malaysia are used to using hand to eat their rice too. I suppose using bare hand to eat is not an usual practice in where you stay. That was perhaps the reason why other people were curious to see. I guess that is normal too for people to look at things that they don't usually see.
Did the eatery you go to provided fork and spoon? You didn't mention using a fork and the spoon you got from a customer there was for your milk. If the forks and spoons were all out of stock, you were in fact forced to use your hand to eat. It is not a decision by choice. I think the service level of the eatery that you went to is really not up to the mark. In fact it is pretty unusual that an eatery will run out of table utensils. Perhaps it is a very popular eat shop.

sadly, spoon and fork and other utensils i think were all dumped in the backsink and the back-up-man was unable to cope with the number of eaters that were present in the eatery at that time. the name eatery itself means, at least here, is not a fine dining restaurant. no floor and kitchen managers. the one who manages the crew in an eatery store, here, we call it product controller. the eat shop is not that popular but because there was a town fiesta parade at that time, they were swamped with hungry customers. it's a small 4th class town. you cannot find this scenario in the cities here or in a semi urban town. of course it is againts social conventions.

I think there's a proper time and place for everything. Of course you wouldn't expect people to find it normal eating by hand if you are in a restaurant, fastfood or hotel. But there's just places with a kind of theme that doesn't only allow to eat by hand but actually endorses it. I'm quite perplexed how the eatery you were in didn't have any cutlery, but I have never eaten pancit by hand. To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing people eat by their hands provided they made sure it has been sanitized prior eating.

I don't stare at people who eat with their hands because I know that some people have better appetites with eating using their hands. My hubby for one would not use a spoon and fork whenever we have fried fish (galunggong) and diced tomatoes. The rice cooker would also be empty by the time he finishes eating unlike when it's adobo or stew. But I wouldn't eat using my hands because I don't know how.

Its nice eating with bare hands as long as it is clean. When we were kids we used to eat with out bare hands and even now. But now I just cant eat with my bare hands. I have to have spoon and fork and wherever I go I have to have my spoon with me either made of steel or plastic. I just dont want to eat with my hands or if I do I have to wash my hand after every mouth feed.

hmmmm, after reading this discussion, i told myself right away that i would leave the place right away. because first of all, they run a restaurant but they lack spoon, and ummm you should have asked for a fork instead if there was no spoon hehehe. but if that happened to me and there are no restaurants nearby and i am so so so hungry then i would go for it, eat with my bare hands and not care about what other people would say

Hello Sabado, if I were you, I rather take away the noodles to other places which I can get spoon or forks. I think it's really way out of personal hygiene eating by hands, and I can't imagine how to pick up the noodles with the fingers. I don't think eating with hands can make the food tastier and who knows I might have diarrhea / food poisoning after that.

well I am in the uk have we have different out looks on eating with hands. If your not comfortable, dont eat there, or bring your own spoon or cutlery. Simples never mind if people look at you, they are ones that are not paying for your meal are they. Or you are not in their homes or hospitality. As long as you enjoyed your meal, should matter what people think.
