Impending Nuclear Attack.. Would You Trust The Media To Warn You?

I wouldn't! Say the likes of the BBC and Sky News had information pertaining to an impending nuclear attack on the UK a couple of days in advance, I don't think either of them would let us know, I really don't. Every man, woman, child and animal for themselves, I'm afraid.
As for the attack itself, well, the UK would only take a couple of strikes to obliterate it anyway which is why thinking about the weapons themselves makes me feel sick!
Would I want to survive?
No chance!
I know the "important" people have access to bunkers but I'd rather be dead than be in one of those.
If you wonder why I'm going on about this I was just thinking about the "Threads" film I saw in the 80s, at the height of the so-called "Cold War."
Scary stuff oh, and the attack centred on Sheffield, not London as you'd expect!

Oh, absolutely the main stream media would let us know there was a nuclear attack pending...if there was a Republican in the White House they could blame. If it's a Democratic president, probably not. Don't want to muss his image, you know. Oh, wait a minute, they could blamed Bush! lol
Hugs,
Maggie

No, our media wouldn't warn us. The Government big wigs would all run for cover and the media would stay just long enough after that to tell us all nothing was wrong, this is just a test.....

Actually, there is one media outlet that would and has warned us, but he is not well accepted by mainstream Americans. Glenn Beck on GBTV has a documentary titled "Rumors of War" I highly recommend it. Erik Stecklebeck is another journalist who is warning strongly of the nuclear threat of Iran. I am convinced we will see the final war in our lifetime. It is difficult to contemplate. God help us all.

If there was no chance of anything surviving then I would rather not know. One of the reasons I live where I live is because of the threat of war. I reckon I'll be safe away from the coast and in the middle of nowhere. The only threat here will come from other residents who are closer to the coast and not prepared.

It probably cost less to film in Sheffield...

Probably! It's actually a fairly big city (for England at least) so to target it wouldn't be a bad idea..unless you're in Sheffield!

I agree. Can you imagine finding out just as that awful alarm goes off. I could lie awake thinking about that. I've already been right about Concorde crashing all those years ago. I hate getting these uncomfortable feelings!

I agree with you.I think It was an alarming talk.Nuclear weapons is not so much weapons as a psychological attack or determent.Nobody would risk universal condemnation by using nuclear weapons. But then,if someone put all his eggs in one basket,no one would escape unscathed. The important people can't live in bunkers for ever.

That period was a very scary time according to my Mum. I hope the time never comes but if it does, I'm in the same camp as you, so to speak.

Actually, if we knew there was going to be a nuclear attack, what could we do? I would agree with the previous poster and have at times said that in the event of a nuclear war. I don't think I would want to be around to "what was that?"
I think that the days of a possible nuclear holocast have abated since the times of the cold war. I think that the leaders of the US, Russia, and China all realize that no one would win such a war. Of course we could still be subject to attacks, perhaps from some radical person or group in one of the former soviet republics where there may still be nuclear missiles. Or we might have to worry about some terrorist group smuggling a nuclear device into a country or countries and wiping out a large city or city. They might succeed in taking out some major cities while leaving the real of the world intact (except for any clouds of nuclear particles.)
I think even Iran and North Korea realize they could not stand a chance in a nuclear war. If they started one, they might hit some targets, but they would soon be obliterated in retaliation. (Hopefully, no one in Iran's government is looking for a quick route to meet Allah and go to heaven.)
Actually, I don't think that nuclear warfare is this big thing to worry about. To me now it's chemical or biological warfare. As the Japanese Sarin gas attacks showed, chemical warfare attacks might be limited to a local geographic area and therefore less of a worry. Although adding a highly toxic chemical to major water supplies could cause more fatalities.
What's more scary is biological warfare. We know that the US and Russia carried out experiments creating bio agents, some of which probably still exist. The idea of a bug getting released, similar to what happened in Stephen King's book "The Stand", could have a greater effect than any nuclear war. What makes this more frightening is if there is any work to develop a toxic bio agent in a third world terrorist state where they might not have the isolation capability of a major country.
Well, sorry about that. I hope I haven't wrecked your day or given you too much to worry about. Again, I won't worry too much about such things unless I have to someday say, "what was that?"

No, you haven't ruined my day. In fact, I find what you have written very interesting. I'd not thought of the chemical/biological threat and you're right of course...either would have devastating consequences.
I wouldn't want to survive such an attack. Mind you, experts have said that future wars will be fought over basics like water.

I would have to agree with you, Janey1966. I would not trust the media to warn us, or for that matter I would not trust that the government would warn us, either. If an all out nuclear exchange occurred, I doubt that any government involved would alert the media to start with. The media would likely find out at the same time as the rest of us, after it was a done deal.

I can imagine all the major politicians finding shelter and leaving us all to fend for ourselves. I suppose if we knew about it beforehand there could be a mass exodus, depending on how much time we had. Mind you, the 3 minute warning wouldn't get us very far!
