A bit of a long winded title, but not sure how ot word the title of this discussion, so please read before jumping in and recommonding books ot read in car etc.
My children are going out to more clubs and I have found myself waiting in car for them to come out as the clubs never run to time and you have to get there early to get a good car parking space.
I listen to the radio as I can't alway contractrate on reading a novel and don't buy newspapers. This got me thinking about what sort of book us ladies (and gents) could have laying around in the car and we could just pick it up in the car and have a quick read while waiting.
What would you like to read in an all sorts book while waiting for the children to come out of clubs
I would like to have a quick recipe section where you could find a quick easy fix it for tea once you got in the front door... like bar b q sauasges as everyone has those in the house and brown sauce etc to whip up the sauce
A small section with some funny jokes in it
A few blank pages where you could play hangman etc if you have other children waiting in car
Do you get my idea and where I'm coming from, just something you can pick up, read for a few mins and then put down until you are next in the car.
I'm now off to collect some children!!LOL

It sounds like a magazine is more what we need. i like Reader's Digest myself. used to read it alot. Lots of good stories and funny quips. And we could just be sure to have a tablet in the car for the hangman game. Ya, I think that would be the way to go.

Well only because I thought I had wored this ok and told everyone that I didn't want them to write what they rea in the car/do in the car etc but what they would want ot see in a mixed bag book that you would keep soley for the car and you could dip and dive into it when you were stuck in the car.
I would like a few blank pages to draw on or play hangman if you have another child in the car.
A couple of very short stories to read ot children .... as they do like ot hear the same stories over and over again.
A recipe section, with quick tips so if you stuck in car, don't know what ot cook for tea it would give you a few quick ideas on how ot use foods you would already have in the house
and so forth.
Perhaps I am too hard on myself, but I wouldn't have commented to anyone else about banging my head etc apart from you as I know you would take it the right way as we are on the same wave lenght etc

This might only relate to a few, but I do my reading on my smart phone and subscribe to an awesome free service called DailyLit which emails a short section from classic works of literature and if you want another you can instantly order it up. The next installment stays on the phone until I am ready to read it. The formatting is pretty similar to Kindle.
If the battery is down, though, maybe I will pick up a crossword puzzle book and work a few squares.

I think the crossword puzzle book would be sufficient. If my phone battery were down, then probably I would write old-fashioned letters to some people I know who do not have a computer connection...instead of reading. I do always carry blank paper and pens in my car.

I would probably just take a magazine, once I start things, I hate putting them down once I start.

We are talking about an allsorts book with lots of things in it to read/flip through while waiting for the children to come out, would you like a section with quick tips for a quick tea with all the stuff you would already have in the house? Alside a few short stories, stuff you can read again and again unlike short stories

Yes of course to me crosswords are a must! is a good way to pass the time and keep your mind active...the first time I completed a crossword in English[ I was learning English]it was such an accomplishment! and from then on I knew[ even if I have an accent] I can write, read and understand English! and after that I did a full course on catering assistant and story writing and I Am proud to say I did it very well!

Hi. I often do this ,too. While waiting , i often do something to kill the time.If not , i will feel bored.Even if i am walking , i can think about something.Especially in some boring meeting, i will plan in advance to do more ,We often have a routine meeting taking us one or two hours.

If I were in your situation, I would probably just bring along a a "large crossword" puzzle book that I would make every day and obviously stick a pen inside. I think the trick or the game is not to bring reading material that would need much of our attention and comprehension, I would not want to be reading a DIY book there, it has to be something easy to get rid and fold up when you see the kids.

What sort of DIY tips would you like ot read about in this all sorts book? So you would like a section with some crosswords, what other tips and quick tricks would you like ot read about in an all sorts book that you could just leave in the car and pick up every time you were in the car

Do you have any craft projects that are small to carry with you and the kind you can pick up and put down at any time? I found while waiting say for example while I am waiting in a dr's. office for an appointment this helps to relieve some tension and keep my hands and mind busy. Sometimes you can pick up a good magazine that offers what you would like to read to find new recipes and jokes.

So are you asking us to recommend? I read a magazine called Woman's World that is just about like what you describe. Recipes, games and short stories. Advice etc.Woman's Day and Family Circle as well.

No I'm not asking you to recommend.. but what you would like to see in a book of that sort and what would intrest you to read if you only had a short amount of time sitting in the car while waiting for children to come out. An odds and sods book full of lots of intresting things that you would like to read while waiting.
Perhaps I haven't explained myself that clearly, thought I had done, but perhaps not

I know that!!!
But what sort of book would she live to dip and dive into, an all sorts book as some of us don't have time span to read a novle but need something quick that they can pick up, read a bit, put down and then pick up again next time in the car. A mixture book as I explain above, my question was and still is what sort of mixture of things would you like ot see/read in a pick me up book to keep in the car.

Sounds like You need some portable and wide ranging reading material to cover many eventualities..sounds like a kindle would be an ideal sort of a gadget for you...they're very portable, amazing battery life, and if you have the 3g version, you'd never be stuck for something new to read..or maybe one of the small android tablet machines you could load with apps and games and have the kindle app on it too..

I understand what you mean. There are some non-fiction books that are designed in such a way that you can imbibe knowledge from them in small segments. However, I don't know of any book quite like the one you describe.
Personally, if I were in that situation, I'd lean more toward books of poetry, guides such as The Complete Tightwad Gazette (good to flip through and read various tips) and other non-fiction books that are broken up into easy-to-digest segments. There are a lot of them out there.
You could always put together the book you have in mind. There just might be a market out there for such a book.

I could put together a book like I'm trying ot talk about, hence I was trying ot see what people would like ot read and get ideas, but 99.9% of people have just told me what they read in the car, which wasn't the question.
Perhaps you could help me out on this discussion and try and steer people into the way you are thinking.
You and celtic have given me new hope. Thank you

There aren't a lot of books that would be easy for me to put down and pick up, unless it was a collection of short stories (like Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul or something) - because I get to INTO the books I'm reading and I probably would end up being late to pick the kids up (assuming I had them) and whatnot. I did just buy a book though that is called "365 to make life more meaningful" or something to that extent, that might be one of those books to leave in the car. Sadly I don't really ever have to wait on people - like kids or parents - and I don't normally drive people around, so this wouldn't really be something that I would do. But perhaps you could try one of those kinds of books!

Instead of a novel I would recommend short stories, so at least you have a chance to finish it off til the kids arrive or otherwise, my personal favourite, Sudoku. It keeps the mind active, you can still listen to the radio and there is no issue with going back a couple of weeks later...you don't have to remember a story.

I usually read in the car sometimes before going to my classes, or I will read in the car while I am waiting to pick up one of my friends or my grandmother. Nothing wrong against reading in the car.

Sorry, so very late in responding...we have had all kind of weather, and our power has been out, intermittently for days...and days!
My aunt, from Shropshire, (living in Canada) used to get a English magazine, I think called "Women's Weekly"...and it had a smattering of everything in it, from recipes to games..short stories to jokes. She loved it for it's full scope..I don't even know if it is around anymore!

I usually get some studying done when I am waiting for mine. I don't do it now as much as I did when they were younger but it always helps to have some reading material and nothing planned right after their practices or events. I have found that we never really know how much longer they will be.

Hi Anne,
Some time it turns my turn too to collect my son from school when I am off my college. If I am a say half an hour earlier there, I usually listen to music. If not pick up a small book like 'Man woman and child/ by Eric shegal.

I've been a fan of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books since the first one came out when I was in high school. I think that those would be the perfect book to keep in the car to read while you are waiting on someone. The reason that I think that any of those would be a perfect book to read in the car is because of the fact that they have several short stories in them. So you wouldn't have to stop in the middle of a story because the kids were ready to go.

I too find myself waiting in the car for my kids lots of times! I try to do all sorts of things while in the car to entertain myself. The radio would always be on for some music, or if the game is on. Or I would have the iPad, and connected to Taekwondo club's wifi, I would be surfing the net.
Lately, I've been trying to read a marketing book. It isn't for any school work. I'm trying to get ideas for my business. Although I don't seem to be getting anywhere as far as the pages go. I would read a few paragraphs, then it's off to pick children again.
