Hello Mylotters :) I am trying to write a story. Just any story, you never know might become the next twilight series :P I'm not writing because of that. I am trying to find my passion so I will know what to go into for college. Anyways have any of you had writers block before? How did you overcome it? In my story I first decided I wanted to make it fantasy like, with witches and stuff. Maybe add a little thriller it, I don't know.. I made my characters and how they relate to each other. Now the only problem I have is actually starting this story off. I never thought it would be this hard!

Dolly Parton says that when a line for a song comes to her mind she writes it down on a scrap of paper and keeps it in a zip lock bag. She has a lot of these bags filled with potential lyrics. She's a musician of course, but I'm sure the same method could be applied to story writing.

thanks :) I am doing that but in a different way. I write my idea of story in notepad and save it in a folder on my computer. Then on days where I clean out my computer I find the folder and read through all of my ideas, then either more ideas come to me or i just edit them or delete them. It is if I find it a good story to write.

my first advice is to walk away from it and come back to it later but in thinking more about it, what i would do is just write whatever comes into your head. dont worry about how it sounds, just write. you can edit later. for me, once i had to write articles on bows and arrows and getting the best mortgage, two subjects that were really hard to write about as i knew not that much about mortgages and even less about bows and arrows! but i got through it and you will too!

Walking away did the trick, thank you to all of you who said that! :) I didn't write a book but I wrote a few pages instead of a paragraph. That must have been extremely hard to write, but you got through it which is good :)

I get writer' block a lot. I actually go to a writing prompt site and write stories based on the prompts. Its a god way to start a short story that can become something bigger or even just to get your mind thinking about a story and brings you back the original story you want to create.

Sometimes, if you take time away from your story, it can definitely help. It can help get rid of that writer's block. I find that it can actually help. I do try to set some time for writing, but when inspiration doesn't seem to come, that's when I take some time away from it. Take the time that you need.

Oh I hate writers block, but then out of the blue when least expect it pops in your head.. yep its starting the first line then you are away, then get stuck again, then repeats over and over...hahahaha Depends what you look to for inspiration, try fantasy paintings and pictures to help visualise scenes and story lines :0)

I understand what it's like to have writers block. I have a couple of different things I do. First of all...I don't believe in trying to force things to happen. I would rather allow it to happen naturally. 1. Sometimes I write anything and everything that comes to mind on paper. I allow my thoughts to flow so I write 'through' the block. 2. At other times I walk away and take care of other things I need to do. Then when I least expect it... Everything opens up and I'm able to continue with what I began to write. Sometimes I feel inspired to go in a completely different direction. Experiment because different things work well for different writers.

Yes, it's really going to be hard. But first off, you have to write about something that you already know too well. Where does your interests lie? That way, you won't be having so much difficulty. But even if you're already interested with your topic, you'll still have to do a lot of research to smooth out the details. Have someone read your drafts to point out to you which makes sense and which doesn't, give you constructive criticisms. I used to like writing, but later I found out I don't have the patience for it. And I'm always in a writer's block.
