What will you do if you are in a foreign land and you get sick? When we travel we cannot predict incidences like this. Just by imagining the scenario is scary for me. I mean you are in a different place, you know only a little about their language and I do hope you have plenty of cash when you travel. Sick like requiring you to seek medical attention in a hospital. Have you been into this kind of situation before? I feel like in being in this kind of situation is really awful. You feel helpless and you need to make yourself better for you to go back to your place and seek medical attention where you are comfortable with. So what do you think? Are there any tips you can share to us. Because I know it can happen to anybody.

You may probably have medical insurance? Are you away for work or just vacationing? If you only have a little amount of money but able to meet our people in a foreign land, you will not be lost. We are being known of helping each other, just seek help and they will have you with an open arms. Don't you know that even if our people do not have any means to sail away, they still will venture and look for greener pasture. So it is not really a big case unless otherwise you have a major operations to be done. And as for universal sickness like flu cough or fever, don't be scared, just seek treatment and cure it as soon as you can. Lots of home remedies can be done and they are simple. It can happen to anybody anytime I know but if we take good care of our body, at least we can lessen the possibility.

Oh well I have known that some medical insurance is not credited to all countries or I guess you have to spend your money and get refunded when you go back to your place.Yes, people will likely help you but not all are willing to spend money for you. What if you spent all your money? But I do believe taking good care of our body is the best prevention.

What if you spent all your money? Why, you don't know how to compute? lol
Our people are helpful, egotism does not count when you are in need.
Oh well you have known that some medical insurances are not being accredited to all hospitals globally and that is why I asked you if the travel you're referring with are whether personal or business. Anyhow, don't travel if you do not have extra money. I think travelling is only for rich people. Of course they will not help you if you feel as if you don't belong to them. lol

Haha! so mean. Well , You spent all your money paying the medical bills of course and there are still more medical labs to pay and stuff. You do not expect these things to happen so that is why you did not bring a lot of money. And yeah we all know what happens if you travel for business so lets say it is just for vacation. If you travel to a foreign land, you are the foreigner so that means they wont feel that sense of belonging you are referring to. So how?

If that happen, then you are out of luck. You can either spend the rest of your trip in your hotel bed feeling sorry for yourself, or you can try to prescribe some medicine to heal yourself with whatever you have in your travel bag, or you can let your fate rest on the chances that you can find yourself a qualify and license doctor for cure in that country. You won't guarantee a speedy recovery from treatment by doctor in certain country if it is a backward and regressive land you are visiting, you may end up getting worse instead of better. If that happen, nothing you can do except pray to your God for mercy.

"I do not want to die away from home if that will happen to me :( So unfortunate.)" It is not up to you to decide if that happen in a foreign land you are visiting, the parasite, bacteria or even the virus will have a greater say over whether you should die or stay alive than youself. It is just the way it is, nothing you can do about it when you are out of luck and trap in such predicament in a strange and foreign land.

When I was twenty to twenty-one years old I traveled around the world. I waited for the ferry in Medan in Indonesia I had to wait a lot of time due to a delay. A free meal was given and I ate a lovely looking salad. On the ferry I got a high fever and kept vomiting. I was very ill for one week staying in Butter Worth. I waited until I was better before I went to KL. I felt weak and tired whilst there. Before departing for an island I went to Mersing. That is where I fell down an open drain and badly injured my leg. I tore the ligament in my leg and came home on crutches.

I was all by myself. I am grateful to a Swedish traveler that got me the pair of crutches. I traveled alone when I was a younger person. Now I travel with my four year old disabled son and my two year old daughter. I find it hard to push a wheelchair and carry the luggage.

havent been to another country if thats what you're meaning but since high school (over a decade ago) i left home for school. I lived with my sister before until i got my own place during college.
I experience, i guess, everything from scratch for me to learn stuff on my own basically. That includes taking care of myself when no ones around. I get up, cook or buy food then go to a pharmacy for medicine while you're burning with fever. Sometimes i cried when i felt so sick and i just needed my mother to be there with me but i was not the type that i tell people right away that am sick.
So now, still away from home working, i make sure i take medicine right away if i feel like im goin to get sick.

Hi thaMARKER, being away from your family you have to make sure that you have everything you need. You can only rely to yourself or the friends you gain from staying away. But you know what is not good sometimes to bear it yourself if you are really serious because it maybe too late. And nobody will know that you are extremely sick and alone at that moment.

I was ill two years ago when I husband and I travelled around in Europe. I didn't see much of Greece, because I spent every day in the hotelroom. I had a fever and I slept most of the day. We asked the staff at the hotel if they could help us find a doctor who spoke English, but they told us to go the hospital instead. I was too ill to do that so I stayed in the hotel and talked to a doctor on the phone. When we were leaving for Bulgaria I was still ill, and it was very hard to travel for many hours. When we arrived in Bulgaria we went straight to the hotel and I went to bed. I was feeling a little better, so we managed to do a little sightseeing, and the rest of the time I spent the hotelroom.

We asked the hotel for a doctor, but they told us that they couldn't help us with that and that we would have to go to the hospital if we wanted to talk to a doctor. My husband and I discussed that option, but I was too ill to do that and I was afraid that I would have to wait many hours at the hospital. I just wanted to stay in my bed, so instead of going to the hospital I talked to a doctor on the phone and he asked me questions about my symptoms.
It is the first time that I have been ill while I was in another country, and I didn't know how to handle the situation. I wasn't sure if I could find a doctor who spoke English and I didn't know much the health system in the countries that I visited. Next time I will find some information about that before I leave.

Yeah I think it is a good idea to check how the system works when it comes to health. Because we cannot anticipate if we get sick while we are traveling. So the doctor you called up is from your place of origin? So I assume that the medication prescribed to you were just over the counter. And thank God for that! and for illness to be not that serious while you are away from home.

Whoa that was awful! You were supposed to go sight seeing but instead you get confined to your hotelroom because you were sick. Do the hotel you were staying do not have a doctor on duty? or a nurse? What did you feel from the experience? What did you do to prevent such occurrences to happen whenever you travel from thereon?

I have learned my lesson after hearing about how ill my brother in the Philippines after he was bit by a mosquito. When I visit there Í'll be aptly prepared wearing a mosquito net suit and armed with a can of Raid.

If the symptoms are not severe, I would go to a pharmacy and ask for a suitable medication. In case of a serious injury or condition, I would go to the emergency unit of the closest hospital. I guess they will help me, even though I'm foreign. Anyway, I wouldn't want this to happen. In case I would be forced to deal with this kind of situation, I keep enough money for unwanted situations.

I remember going abroad. So, what I did was to be well prepared by buying all necessary medication. Should you get sick in a foreign land, consult a doctor as soon as possible. Thank God, during my stay there I did not fall sick at all.

I do travel with a little first aid kit with me. Just in case I get sick while traveling. And it is still best to consult a doctor wherever place you are if you think your condition is not the usual stomach upset.

that really a very depressing situation to me to get stranded on unfamiliar place. you only have few money left for your food and look like a homeless. with no one know you and no one bother to ask fro help. you could resort to begging and much worse when t winter and it is cold and your hungry. the terrible situation when you are sick becomes threatening and often result from depression and lack of care. think when your sick, you need to ask the free medical clinic giving medical assistance. for me, before i plan to go to unfamiliar place. see to it that i have a map and marker of place so would jot get lost. also i need to carry with me money and food to keep me survive.

Yes , that's how you describe it. Like a homeless person and no one to rely on and care for you at times like this. I do hope there are free medical assistance for foreigners getting unexpected diseases or health conditions until someone form their own country can provide.

I do think it is best to travel with a buddy whom you are comfortable with. Because in a rarest chance you get in trouble or into a crises you have someone who can help you or give you assistance in anyway. And I also think it is more fun to explore the world with someone.

It happened to me and i had to go back to my home country because the treatment i needed wasn't simple...
But if you have medical insurance you should be covered, unless you get sick because of an already existing condition. If something happened I would ask somebody who speaks English about a doctor... In cities hospitals have an emergency department, i think that would be the best place to go in urgent cases.

Getting sick can be troubling at times, whether I am in a foreign land or in my native land. Yes, it can happen to anyone at anytime. what we can do is to do what we can to prevent. Having a balanced and complete diet, exercising regularly, drinking more water, having a good rest, and practicing a healthy lifestyle. If in case we got sick in a foreign land, we can always ask assistance from our embassy if there is one. Or else, we can do some personal medication. Hope you're doing well and in good health.

I like that idea to consult the embassy. I do think they can help you in this case. And yes, better make ourselves physically fit and healthy to avoid this incidences.

I would definitely be scared and worried if I got sick in a foreign land. Not only do I have to explain my illness, but the cost would be horrendous. I have asthma and I am happy that in most of my travels I have not had an asthma attack. I also don't drink water that isn't bottled, not because I am picky, but rather I have had a bad case of diarrhea before and I don't want this to happen again. I just avoid exotic foods even if the locals tell me that I should try it out. I would rather miss the experience than get the chance to be hospitalized or sick.

Yes that is true. Now you reminded me that I should be careful of what I am eating. Because if I plan to travel, my agenda aside from sight seeing is to taste the food. Now you got me thinking twice. I do not want to miss the experience but I do not also want to be hospitalized :(

hi always take extras of any medicaitons you must take and get your'doctor to help you find reputable medical facilities wherever'you go in a foreign land and if possible the names of good doctors too.I have never gone to a strange country and gotten sick'what common sense tells me to prepare for those emergencies.

Yes it is good to prepare beforehand and familiarize ourselves with the doctors available in places we went to just be on a safer side.

I went through this when I was in China in December 2010. I started having problems and tried to find out if there were any English-speaking doctors in the city. I described what was going on to my niece and she freaked out. She did a search on the symptoms and my nephew translated the information and then I went to a hospital with my boss and my niece and nephew and they admitted me. This is not something I would want to go through again so I am hesitant to leave America even though I am told that medical care in some countries is better, in many it is not. I just wish that I could feel comfortable traveling again, but since I don't know how long I might remain cancer free, I don't know how safe it might be.

The best way to go about is :
1) Always carry a medical kit with you. That should include
a) Analgesic medicine
b)Anti histamine tablets
c)cold & flu tablets and motion sickness tablets.
d) thermometer
e)antiseptic ointment
f)diarrhea medicine and laxatives.
g)sunscreen

First, basing from experience, I should have medicine ready in case I get sick. Next, though I've never been to another country, get your english translation dictionary and ask help from the locals. If you are helped very well, do not forget to give some money as giving thanks. Always bring your phone with you and keep in touch if you are in danger.
