While there may be some similarities, there are also some big differences. First to address your similarities:
1. On Friends they hung out in a coffee shop; but on How I Met Your Mother, it is a bar.
2. On Friends the married couple was a long time coming and there were a couple of baby scenarios while on HIMYM the married couple exist pretty much from the start but the baby thing does take a while.
3. The womanizer on HIMYM is much more overdone and flamboyant.
4. I don't think anyone on HIMYM is boring and it is several seasons before Ted becomes a professor and even after that he gets into architecture again. On Friends Ross is not a professor, he works at a museum.
Other differences are that on Friends there are three women and on HIMYM there two.

1.The creators don't make it a rip off entirely.Both the groups hang out at the same place every day and sit at the same table (couch in case of friends).
2. Dude are you out of your puny little mind I never said it was entirely based on friends but the gags are almost same entirely.
3. Again I am talking about the theme of the show.
4. Watch the show before you comment your stupidity on someone else post.In 6th season of friends Ross begins to work as a professor at New York University started dating one of his students, Elizabeth .Similarly Ted met and started dating his economics student named Cindy.
You don't even know what you are talking and your comment is vague and illogical.Read the post before you opened your mouth and don't post just for the sake of money.People like you should be banned on Mylot.

I think there are similarities but not to the point where I think it is a copy cat of Friends. They hang out in a bar in How I Met Your Mother while they hang out in a coffee shop in Friends. The deal with Marshall and Lilly is that they have been together ever since the start of the show unlike the couple in Friends.

I never said that its exactly same as friends but loosely based on the friends theme of gags.Only Barney is one of the most original characters the writers created and for that Neil Patrick Harris got the Peoples choice award in 2010.Except him all others characters don't have anything unique about them that separates them from friends.

I never really thought about it, but you know what your right. It is a lot like the TV show Friends. I really like "How I Met Your Mother", but I think they are getting a little ridiculous w/ just how long he is telling this story to his kids....LOL

Yeah its getting quite annoying now.I mean everyone is waiting for Ted to meet his future wife but they keep on delaying that.For me this show is all about Barney who is still making it fun to watch.But if they delay this anymore ,HIMYM will lose significant amount of its audience.

I like both shows I don't know I don't think about Friends at all when I think about this show. I think they are both funny and you they both have the same place to hang out but I don't see it. Barry's character is some much different from Joey. Joey was more likable in his ways of picking up women he just needed to say a few words. Barry comes up with this whole scam to pick them up and it is all to funny. I guess because I have seen every episode of Friend about 5 times over I might not be as open to see it.

I think How I met your mother is a modern version of Friends and I can't admire that Friends is the best tv show of all times, but How i met your mother is the tv show that i wait to come every week and i can't live without it. For me How i met your mother is the best tv show at the moment and nothing for the past years can compare to it. Other thing, How i met your mother is bringing new kind of fun, different from other tv shows and this can't be left unseen. I think HIMYM is incredible and it will be watched many many years at future .
