I really have a bad problem with my knee. It's been 3 weeks now that my knee hurts so bad! It is really painful everytime I stand up or sit down. two weeks ago, my knee swelled up and I went to the doctor. And he gave me 3 kinds of medicine to take for 10 days. I bought all the medicine and follow the doctor's instructions, and right now, it feels worst! It is really painful especially when I am sleeping. Sometimes the pain woke me up. I don't know what to do.. huhuhuhu

Has your doctor told you what caused this? You're way too young and pretty to have some form of arthritis so we can rule that out. Having read some of the posts here, you said you did bang your knee a couple of times or always. Question is how or why did you bang your knee? I remember having such a swelling before but it was because I broke my knee in a basketball game. It took about 6 months for that knee to heal and it was never the same again. Try to get another doctor's opinion. I'm no doctor, but I know pretty sure that the knee is a very delicate joint. If you have injured yourself in some way, it's best to find the right doctor (specialist) to check up on you and getting an x-ray.

Soft tissue rheumatism. I think I may have heard of that before. I guess you may need higher doses of whatever medicine you're taking or they are not just right for you. When you find a specialist I'm sure they would know exactly what a general physician has missed. Get well soon. cheers!

Thanks for the respond and thanks for the compliment! The doctor told me that it is not an arthritis. He said that I am too young for arthritis. Only older people or obese people can get arthritis. He said that what I am experiencing right now is a soft tissue rheumatism. He gave me 3 different kinds of medicines and none of them worked.. :-(

First, what happened to injure the knee? Did you fall, twist or bang it? Does your family have a history of arthritis? If you fell recently, did you fall on that knee? It's easy to squirt the knee cap out of the protective sack that it is in, and takes surgery to put it back in the sack. I did that a few years ago and the knee constantly ached and was swollen. It also would lock at very inopportune times.
Three weeks is too long of a time to go through that kind of pain! Especially with a doctor that simply gives you meds and doesn't find the root cause of the pain. It sounds like the knee needs to be x-rayed to see if there is a break in it.
Have you used ice packs on it? I have knee problems and I always have ice packs in my freezer. The cold will reduce the swelling and fluids on the knee and also reduce some of the pain. Put the pack on for 10 to 15 minutes and then repeat it every couple of hours. Also are you elevating the leg and knee? Especially at night you should prop the knee and leg up with extra pillows. It will keep the fluid from forming in the knee area and that way it will keep the swelling down. Does the knee hurt when you walk? If so you should wrap it with an ace bandage and use a cane to take some of the stress and weight off the knee.
Have you used all the medication that the doctor recommended? If not and you're still taking it, don't take any over the counter medications like aspirin etc. You can cause really serious problems by taking other medications with prescription meds.
I'm not a doctor, and have lived with a bad knee since 1973. Most of what I recommend is from all the care I have had to do so that I can stand to walk. The biggest thing to do is to find another doctor who will take the time to listen to you and provide the care for your knee. Without proper care you could end up like me, I had to have a total knee replacement and it didn't work well and now every step with my left leg is like a new adventure in pain. But until you get to see the doctor, use ice packs on your knee. If you use heat it will make the swelling worse, and increase the pain. Ice will numb the nerve endings and help ease the pain.

I would still keep the knee elevated at night to keep the swelling down Also it might need some special exercises to keep the knee mobile. I use Ben Gay for pain and making the knee mobile. Make sure that you also keep drinking water a lot because it helps keep the arthritis under control. It helps keep fluid in the sockets of your knees.
An Ace wrap when you're going to be very active helps a bunch. It gives the knee extra support and the pressure keeps the pain down. I'll come up with more arthritis hints after I've had a chance to check out the medical books I have on my book shelves.

Yes, my family have history of arthritis. I think I tripped over few months ago but my knee didn't hurt that time. Last night I took a pill for arthritis and I noticed that the pain went away. And when I woke up, it hurts a little bit but not as bad as before I took the arthritis pill.

I think you better consult your doctor again. You might also need to have it x-rayed or something. Does any of the medicine given contain some pain-reliever in it? If they don't, ask your doctor also if you could take some. You could also put a warm compress as a temporary way of easing the pain. Hope your knees get better soon

Good day Chicgale,
I was in the same situation long time back. That, my right knee was aching terribly. And same as you are, the pain also tend to woke me up. However, I did not end up going to a Doctor. Instead, I just apply a self medication to myself. Putting liniment like efficascent oil on my knee then cover up a cloth overnight. Repeatedly doing this process everyday plus the power of prayer that helps to heal my knee. And now, I am proud to say that my knee is very fine. However, due to old age, although my right knee is working very fine, the other knee starts to feel a sort of pain. Thus, I am now applying the medication to the left side now.
With that above, I am not so sure if the medication that I have done will be applicable to you. However, you can try other self medication and apply external medicament only so you can avoid drinking a lot of medicines. Thus, drinking a lot of medicines will slowly affect the kidneys.

I would suggest seeing another more experienced doctor. And if it really is a rheumatism, don't over strain the tissue too much, it'll just make it worse. Every time I have internal tissue problems, I try not to exercise them too much and sometimes take painkillers to keep the pain at bay. And, soon, the problem goes away. If it still persists, just do what most labels say, and see a physician! :P

My husband had the same problem, and as a nurse I suggested he sleep with a pillow between the knees, Anti inflammatory and heat. He has improved a lot, however, when he forgets to keep warm and wears shorts on days that are a little breezy, it starts to come back. I am a believer in keeping very warm. I swear by it.

Tell your doctor about the unpleasant symptoms you experience so that he can prescribe another kind of medicine.Hasn't he/she prescribed that you undergo physical therapy?

oh my gosh... you need to seek another doctors opinion on that. why did it get worse? didn't the medications work?
my sister in law has the same problem, her knees that is. but whenever she takes a pain reliever, the pain goes away... it's not as bad...
better have it checked immediately before it gets a little worse

I, not being a doctor, I frankly do not understand the cause of your knee pain. However, I can understand that when you accuse this pain, you are really ill. Now you rightly directed you to a doctor, but from what you describe, I think that unfortunately you have not yet solved the problem. The only advice I can possibly give you is to refer to another, perhaps more specialist inherent in this type of problem.
I wish, however to you, that this disease will close as soon as possible.

just go to the specialist. MUsculo skeletal or orthopedic doctors. You have to put warm water in the swelling area within 30 min. that is for vasodilation. Only 30 minutes. Okay?

I'm sorry to hear about your knee. I'm not a doctor but it sounds like your doctor hasn't help you very much. Did your doctor give you a diagnosis?
If it was me and I felt pain and swelling I would use an anti-inflammatory like aspirin or turmeric. I've learned to help myself if and when I can't count on medical professionals to help me.
Good luck with it and I hope you feel better soon.

i understand knee pain and i may not know how bad your knee hurts but i do not how bad it can hurt. i have no cartilage (not sure of sp.) in my knee where it should be. i had it x-rayed many times throughout a few years and no one seemed to find ne thing and once they discovered this they had given me some meds and physical theropy trying to strengthen my knee. i dont know if this is an option but i was refered to a specialist just for knees because the pain was so bad i could barely walk sometimes.
i really hope that your knee gets better!!
