Single use items, what a waste. Used once and in a landfill for years.

Toothpicks, plastic stirrers, straws, etc. What can you think of that is used once and then discarded? Can you think of ways they can be reused?
Like plastic straws can be rinsed out and used to make a weaving. You can put string down each straw and tie off. Then weave over and under each straw. You move the yarn, string, fiber that you wove with off the straws and keep weaving.
Plastic stirrers can be used at the end of the belt that you wove. Toothpicks, if you're sure they are natural and haven't been coated with anything, if they're wood, can probably be composted.
We once had a man come and give us a talk. He spoke of how much waste there was in making a toothpick. Cut down an entire tree. Chain saw gas. Transport to a factory. More gas from the truck transport. More cutting and cutting using electricity. Until you have millions of little sticks. If there is that much waste in making a toothpick and we don't know if they used renewable forest wood or rainforest wood. Can you imagine how much more waste there is with plastic stirrers?
They're now having difficulty finding enough places to bury people. Can you imagine how much time before we have difficulty finding places for landfills?
So what single use items can you think of? Can you think of ways to use them more than one time?
I've already said that veggie or fruit netbags can be made into pot scrubbers. Many times I've written that over the years.
So are there things that you reuse and how?

This subject does make me think about how to use again things that are ment to be used only once.
It requires some skill with craft : if you have some materials and you know how to use them to make a new thing that is usefull , that is a craft.
I think about making things with old papers , making a paper pulp and reshape it to some decorations or things that can be used but I need to learn how to do it.
I usually throw the garbage to the special containers that are ment for recicling : plastic to plastic containers , paper to paper containers , cans I sometimes give to the supermarket and get some money for them...

If they recycle that stuff, then fine. Our newspapers are recycled. But straws and stirers are not. It's great that you're doing recycling.
Paper mache, if they aren't recyclig newspapers, there are websites and probably youtube videos to show you how. There are youtube videos to show how to recycle most things. I saw one on how to make a bath mat out of an old towel. If you type in recycle crafts on the internet and what you want to recycle, there are tons of things that will come up, usually, some things, there won't be.
So go to youtube and learn whatever craft you want to keep thins out of the landfills.
It's good that you can get money for cans. You've got a great start! Read other responses below and you'll get even better.

Hello, I'm happy that you are worrying for the environment and want to reuse things. I would recommend you to look in "how-to" and "Do it yourself" pages for reusing things you would normally throw in the trash. For example, here is one using straws to make other stuff: www.wikihow.com/Category:Plastic-Straw-Craft and here is one that shows how to reuse some straws to make ice straws instead of using plastic ones that you have to throw away after one use www.instructables.com/id/IKEA-Ice-Straws/ Like that there are a lot of recommendations of how to reuse partially or totally your trash, and even ways to avoid needing it in the first place :).

I do look into how to recycle stuff quite often. I find that when I go to youtube and look up a recycled craft project, I do better because I can see how to do it. Wkihow is good, too. Thanks and take care.
I'm trying to urge other people to do more. Like refuse the straws in the first place or if you take them, reused them.
I hope people learn from all the responses here today. Thanks and take care.

well, tooth picks are made of wood so we just put them in the green bin pile so they will turn into mulch but i know what you mean.
what bugs me is all the junk mail i get. this stuff doesnt need to be sent out. imagine all the trees that could be saved.

I look thru the junk mail for a self-addressed free postage envelope. If there is one with free postage or postage paid by the company. I stuff as much of the junk in there as I can and send it back to them.
I look to see if there is a phone number or email address to stop the unwanted mail. Sometimes there is. I got a very explicit dirty magazine one time. I found the number to call and told the woman I did not want this magazine (I'm a teacher of children, really need that in may mailbox, NOT). I called the company and told them not to send it. The lady on the other end of the phone apologized. She said she would take my name and address of their mailing list immediately and that they did not want to upset, embarass or cause any problems to anyone. She thanked me for calling. I know how I got it. I ordered fishnet stockings and the next thing I know, I got this dirty mag. The address had my name messed up the same way as the fishnet stocking order.
In the states, there is a place published once a year, where you can write to them and tell them that you want to be taken off mailing lists. If you haven't bought anything from a company in the last year, then they're supposed to take you off the list. Takes two weeks to a month. If they don't, you send their name and address to the companty that gets rid of unwanted junk mail and they'll contact them personally for you. I'm not sure if there is such a place in Canada or not.
You could also do a search of how to get rid of unwanted junk mail and start your own discussion. That would help lots of people.
Thank you very much for bringing this up. We may have helped a lot of people today.

I DO, everyday, make a serious effort to reduce, reduce, reduce...and what's left over, re-use! It is becoming easier, as I re-think everything before it is bought, especially nefarious items like straws or stir-stix. In the Glove compartment of my truck, and the carrier on my E-Bike, I have containers with knife, fork and spoon (easily washed)and my Travel mug! I don't buy things with extra packaging , preferring to buy bulk, and repackaging at home, in re-cycled jars, etc. I just had a fight with the Pharmacy that fills my prescriptions...why can't they refill my pill bottles...I am the only one that touches them? Lost that battle but will continue to try! Being on regular meds, I found so many uses for them...but now running out of uses! Cheers!

Terrific!
This discussion wasn't so much for you as for people who haven't even begun to think!
I know, about the medicine containers. We have 10 with coins we're saving. But there are only so many coins you can save.
I think I will have to tell servers to quit giving me straws at food places. They automatically give them to people. I don't think of it until they set them down in front of me. Then once they're given out, it's too late. I have to either take it or they'll throw it away.
Thanks, I hope lots of people read this. I will be buying veggies from a CSA, so I return packaging each time. So the brown bag this time goes back next time and the brown bag next time goes the following time. We can keep reusing the same bag. Since the veggies come from the ground and are dirty anyway as well as the egg csrtons, I keep bringing those back.
Here, sometimes when you buy in bulk, like spices, you can reuse the containers and fill up the spice containers again.
I'm thinking about buying a Swiss Army knife or just carrying cop sticks. Thanks and take care.

Seriously, I never see the point of using toothpicks, no offense to those who use them. I'll find another way to remove food from my teeth. About the reusing part, I reuse the jars bottle to keep stuff like spices, barley, nuts and coffee. I have a set of the same sizes. I even kept pickles in them.

I use dental floss, but that's a single use item, too.
Jars, that's a good start. Are there any other things that could be used more?

That's a great idea with the fruit and veggie net bags. I've never heard that before. However, for me, I don't so much try to reuse single-use items as I try to avoid them all together. When I go to the grocery store, I don't even put my fruit/veggies/herbs in bags most times because I know I'm going to have to wash them when I get home anyway. I don't use toothpicks at all - I can brush my teeth if something is stuck. Or, I do have some skewers for barbecuing that I can reuse. I avoid straws if I can, unless they are the biodegradable kind. Also, whenever I do get plastic bags, I use them for cleaning up after my dogs or as small trash bags so I don't have to buy more trash bags.

I'm going to try to avoid more now, too. Your teeth must be farther apart than mine. There is no way I can get stuff out without dental floss.
The problem is that some places give you a straw before you even think to tell them not to.

I tried to answer this last night, but something was wrong here so it wouldn't go through.
Anyway, I recycle almost everything. I have trash pickup every week but I put out the trash maybe twice a month because it just isn't worth the effort for one or two plastic grocery bags worth of trash.
Two things I reuse that I haven't seen much of (or missed it) in the discussion so far are jars and plastic bags. I use glass jars to hold leftover food, nuts, seeds and candies from flimsy bags and so on. I use the plastic ones to hold things for the garage and sometimes for the office.
Plastic bags - not ziplocks or baggies, but bags that things come in, are reused until they literally fall apart. For instance, plastic bags that frozen vegetables come in. They're freezer bags, right? I use twist'em ties on them and label them for the freezer. I use a brand of popcorn (not microwave!) that comes in a ziplock type of bag. I reuse the bags to hold rolls, bread, whatever else you'd use a ziplock bag for. They're not freezer bags, but there are a lot of other uses.

Yes, I reuse glass jars, too. Esp. when I pick and dry mint. Other things that I've gathered like seeds from the wild.
There was a little bit about jars and a little bit about bags, but yours goes beyond and I'm encouraging people to read as much as they can to get more ideas.
The number of people who use and recycle crystal light containers was a surprise. But I'm glad they do. Piggy bank idea for that was cool. Glad you read others so that if there are more ideas, you can get them.
I reused twist ties something fierce. Hadn't thought about that because I just do it without thinking.
Thanks, I hope we helped some people today.

I understand this topic really is for people who don't recycle already; however, to answer your question dental floss and bathroom tissue are single use items for many of us. I plan to keep using both items, as feel dental floss helps me avoid dental visits. Keep in mind I'm over 50 and have had only 2 cavities during my life time. This is a huge savings, as the last cavity was costly with no dental insurance.
My dentist gave me a toothbrush and dental floss during my last visit. She says that I'm doing a great job of using them.

Reusing wrapping paper and bows may be new to some people and that would save a lot of landfill. I use Christmas bags and people usually reuse those for the next person.

So what single use items do you recycle? The topic is not about ones you don't. I understand that some single use we can't, but what about the ones we can?
The idea is to increase the reuse of single use items and to get ideas for that.

My first approach to his issue is to try not to buy one time use things. We buy straws that can be washed in the dishwsher for more uses, you can buy more durable toothpicks that can be washed and used again or dental picks made out of metal. And we just stir with spoons or chopsticks. Yes our chopsticks are washable too. I know that sometimes it is necessary to buy things that are one time use things but there are so many things we can avoid. Use a cloth instead of a paper towel.

Yes, I'm going to have to talk to the restaurants we go to. They put this stuff out before we even ask them. You would think they would ask if we need a straw or a stirer. I don't think of it until after they give me one and then they have to throw it away if I don't use it and that makes it worse than single use, that's no use!

I do reuse alot of items intended for one use. I had gotten a box of makeup towlettes. They were huge. I would use half one time and the other half the next. Tooth picks i put in my little tray in the car and reuse them. I reuse the plastic containers that food comes in. I also reuse boxes that I get things in. I am sure there are many others that I can't think of right now.

There are some great ideas posted. I really need to concentrate on this area more. We recycle our newspapers into our garden compost and we of course take the kitchen waste to the compost. Leftovers get taken to the dog for scraps (there are rarely very many left). Wooden toothpicks would also be put into the garden compost. We don't use coffee stirrers here at home. Most of the time hubby gets his coffee here at home and does not buy it out (we try to save $ this way) so we do not have coffee stirrers. We do have straws which we rewash and use over for the toddler. I have used the net bags for scrubbers as well as reusing them for loose fruit that I have bought. I take the styrofoam trays that meat comes in and I wash it very good with bleach water and then use it later on as water catchers for my garden starting trays or potting plants. Old yogurt containers and things of this nature can be made into plant starting pots.

i also notice the same things so t s very important for people to get aware of recycle and reuse item that could be diverted into useful use. f people would learn to gather all there waste and learn segregation. they help the environ meant as well as they could learn income from those recyclable materials. instead of buying new materials, one could just recycle item which could still beneficial.

I reuse my Crystal Light containers to hold my straws.. I have two like that. Sorry, but I have to have my straws. I don’t like to drink without a straw. I even drink coffee with a straw. Don’t take my straws away! I have reused plastic coffee containers to dip out dog food and collect bacon grease.

There have been lots of uses for Crystal Light containers on here. Glad so many people are reusing those!
I'm not saying don't use straws because some people's teeth are sensitive and I used them when my 4 front teeth were smashed. What I'm saying is using them once and then throwing them away is a waste and taking up tons of landfill space. So find a way to use them again. Like using them to weave something or weave them into something. Or Cut them, flatten them and use them for a picture frame, something. Think. Read. Research. Figure something out so they don't go in the landfill.
Also please check out other people's ideas for how to reuse items that are normally single use. These ideas might also save you money.

I use a crystal light container to keep water in for my steam iron. I can't think of other ways to use them other than holding straws. I feel guilty throwing them away. I also have the Walmart brand of Crystal light.. they have a really neat shaped container.. easy to pour water from... I know.. I could make a vinaigrette and keep in one of them... that would be good for veggies and salads.

I am completely with you on that. I hate the thought of all of us throwing things away after using it once. Why are their so many fruits and vegs packed in packaging? I always try to buy fruit which comes individually or has minimal packaging if it can't be avoided. My favorite is going to the market with a big shopping bag and loading all groceries into that. Unfortunately it is not as easy as said with our busy lives and through my normal work schedule I miss the market days. But I definitely and we must all try to do our best to help the world we live in.

There are a lot of things that are just for one time use only, like candy wrappers and bags of chips, etc. This things are also one of the major contributor of trash. I do recycle what I can, for instance, I use grocery bags as my trash bags, but there are somethings that I wish are just as recyclable as others, like the wrappers I just mentioned. If only every body does at least one recycled project a week, I think we could make a big difference for our future and the world.

The metalic candy wrappers, I roll them into a ball. I put then in clear Christmas ornaments. Then I either hang the ornaments up or give them away. The clear wrappers that are tinted, they can be used on cards. Like red for Valintines and so on.
Yes, I think one recycled project per week would be a wonderful idea. I have a jar full of wrappers. Very colorful. Thanks and take care.

Some great ideas for reusing things that you posted. The world is so overrun with garbage and full landfills. Its terrible. I had someone tell me the other day that it was really bad that I clean my toothbrushes with rubbing alochol because its bad for us and that I should buy one time use disposable toothbrushes... yea I'm no thanks. I dont use tissues or paper napkins and for years and years I did cloth diapers. I dont like buying something to use once to pollute the earth I'd rather have something I can use over and over.
Personally I want to be creamated. I dont want my body taking up space in the ground that could be somewhere people could live or farm land. To me there is no point being preserved in a casket.

Hydrogen peroxide, food grade, used in dentists' offices would probably clean the toothbrushes well and be better for you.

I know that straws can be used for craft projects. My son made a tringle out of straws in math class it is kind of cool. We have it on display in our family room. Toilet paper rolls can be used as wrappers for candy, you stuff them with candy and then decorate them with tissue paper tying the tissue paper with ribbon on each side. I used the Crystal Light containers as little banks. Just put a hole in the lid and decorate.

I bet Crystal Light does make a great bank, I hadn't thought of that.
Straws can also be used for science projects. I forgot about that.
