Why do people get tattoos?

Everywhere I go I see people with tattoos. I think that in most cases they are ugly. When I ask people why they get all their tattoos they say its to be different. How is it being different when just about everyone has them? Another response is that they want to show creativity. No matter how much I like something I know that I will want a change eventually. I have hung pictures and really liked them, but in time I change it around. It seems like putting something on and wearing it everyday for the rest your your life is as far from being creative as can be.I believe that tattoo artists are making a fortune on peoples desire to fit in and actually be the same as one another.
I know its an unpopular things to say, but I knew a beautiful girl who had striking blond hair and flawless honey colored skin. I guess she did not know how beautiful she was, because the next time I saw her she had dark ink all along her left arm and on her chest. No more sign of glowing, clear skin. Its like she put graffiti on a work of art.

My brother is a tattoo artist but I have not tried to having a single tattoo yet. I also get to ask people why they have their tattoos. They have their tattoos for a lot of reasons, that is, to mark an occasion, emotion or a period of life. Example, they get it to honor someone who is special, to honor an event or something that means something to them. Surely, there must be be a solid reason why they resort onto having a tattoo considering the pain that they must experience for having one.

I don't like tattoos either. I see some artistic ones that can look good if there is not much of them, but wouldn't want it for myself because it's not easy to change it if i don't like it. I understand if they get a tattoo for the memory of someone they love, but getting them to look "different", I don't see why it's worth covering clear skin with ink.

I think having tattoos is not a good choice.
Many girls and boys will have their partner's name tattoos on their body to show their loves. But when they break up how they deal with the tattoos???
It is a serious choice. It is how to deal with your own body.

I don't find tattoos attractive either, lol. Thankfully, I never see people where I live have tattoos on them. But I remember that when I saw someone with tattoos over them, I got freaked out and intimidated by them and stayed away from them. But I guess it's just their preference of beauty and stuff. To someone else, tattoos would be attractive, but to me, I definitely don't want a guy with a tattoo on them.

I have 11 tattoos and I don't regret a single one of them. I got my first tattoo when I was 19 in memory of my grandfather. I'm now 24 and half of my tattoos relate to my favourite band because I am THAT passionate about them. I love tattoos. They fascinate me. I don't think they're ugly, unless they're done really badly or it's just a generic tribal pattern that people get to be "cool".
I've designed all of my tattoos myself and each one is personal to me. Some of them I like more than others, but there isn't one that I regret. My tattoos mark certain things in my life. They're permanent reminders of milestones or things that mean a lot to me. If my interests change as I grow older, so what? At least I have things to look back on that tell a story of my life and what meant a lot to me at specific points in my life.
Tattoos are a way to express yourself. It's art. Not everybody is in favour of it, but I'd much rather get a tattoo than hang a painting or a photograph on my wall.

I do think that the work that tattoo artists to is very impressive, however, I think that it looks ugly on the skin and from a distance they just look like black marks. Decorating in any other way, pictures, ect. leaves room to continue to be creative, and not be stuck with the same things that were around when we were teenagers. We all have things to look back on, memories, photos, ect. I guess I don't want to be reminded of my teen years every time I look at my body.

They are not attractive to everybody, and not everybody likes them, but they are becoming more and more popular and thankfully (in my opinion) more socially acceptable. I'm proud of my ink and wouldn't change any of it, and I plan on getting many more tattoos in the future. I do understand, though, that not everybody finds them appealing or interesting.

It's just a way of expression, much like clothing or hairstyle. Some people go all out when it comes to expressing themselves (Lady Gaga comes to mind), while some are more modest.
Personally, I don't really think it matters that much if it's what the person wants and if it doesn't affect his life, however they need to realize that it does affect peoples impressions of them. I try not to judge prematurely, but if a person looks like a rapist hobo and is holding a knife in one hand, I'd certainly avoid him. But if he has messy hair, ruffled clothing, and tattoos all over him, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's dangerous or he's deviant, but his appearance would make me a bit uneasy until I confirm his true personality.

Okay, so what exactly does a rapist hobo look like? But yeah, one of my closest friends has a bunch of tattoos and he has an awesome personality.

I hear that one a lot too. A way of expression. Talking and communicating are how we communicate. As I said, it is something that has been fed to us,because people have communicated just fine for many years without tattoos. One of the parallels I have also found is that tattoos are expensive and most people who have them are really not what one might call wealthy. I have a couple who have two children living one block away from me, and they are barely making ends meat, however, their, "self expression" is so important to them that they seem to get new tattoos every year.

Uh TinkerKitty, I think rapist hobos would have... messy hair... ruffled clothing... and tattoos all over him. DOM DOM DOM! Haha!
You do make a good point celtickimba. Like I said, if it doesn't affect ones life then by all means, go ahead, but if you're letting your tattooing consume your life, then you've got a problem. It's just the same with other interests like drinking, gambling, and computer gaming. Moderation is key.
I guess you do have to think it through a bit more thoroughly though... cause tattoos are permanent. Gotta make sure you don't regret later whatever crap you're doing now. Hehe.

Hi celtickimba.I was wondering the same thing. I've never understood why people get tattoos. Okay, so the temporary ones can be fun for the kids, but then again they are painless and come off. The permanent ones, are well, permanent. I'm not interested with having something like that on me. Plus, I'm not into inking my body. I'd rather be ink free.
Happy mylotting!

Tattoo is a work of art, I also like it but I don't like a permanent one. I have it adhered into my skin usually during festivals, but removed it after the event.

i think people get tattoos... because they think that getting the tattoos are style and passion... so that they are having tattoos.. this is my opinion...

I personally don't see how a tattoo makes you different and while I can somewhat see how it might express creativity, it really depends on what it is. I have one tattoo, and it has a personal meaning to me. It's on my ankle where I keep it hidden for the most part. My tattoo is for me, it's not for anyone else. While I understand that many people don't like Tattoos, I also understand that many people do, and hey if you do, more power to you.

i respect your opinion. =) i have two tattoos because its a way for me to express who i am. people have different perspective about having a tattoo. it depends on how a person carry herself having one. hehe
