I have some ideas for writing a book, and a quite clear idea about how to do, I am not that close to even begin writing, but I thought how do you write a book, do you just begin to write at some idea that popped in to your head or do you do a lot of research, I am mostly want to write fantasy, so the research is more like creating the world the whole thing is set in, but that can be called research as well as anything else. I don't want to write anything before I have a clear idea of the entire world, and a lot of the people I have this idea that the writing is easier when you know the whole world, and all the different species or races there is in the world. Also there should be some purpose, and that should be relatively clear as well when you write, otherwise you will pursue all the ideas you get while writing.

mrbytes I suggest going to the library and check out some books on writing. I also check the internet for articles for suggestions on writing. I too want to write a novel and am working on very slowly. Good luck to you and welcome to myLot!!

Yes I do not hurry so, I am just in the planning phase so I just write down my ideas and see if I can make them work with what I already have.

It depends how you write. Are you a planner or a "seat of the pants" writer? Some people sit down and plan absolutely everything, often with great screeds of information about characters, places, things, the story... everything is detailed down to the minutiae. Other people just sit down and write. They see where their imagination and the story take them. Personally, I'm a bit of both: I jot ideas down (in StorYbook, a very neat little application that tracks everything) but mostly I just write. Admittedly I plan a lot in my head beforehand but in the end I know I'm going to have to rewrite it all several times anyway, so I don't worry too much. You sound like a planner, in which case you need to make sure that you don't sit and plan for ever, just to put off the writing. Planning's good but it won't get the book written!

No I mean to see what I can get, although there is the starting - I could start backwards, but that requires more planning, I should find some good opening, hard to come up with something. However I might just throw myself add the writing, see where that will lead.

Books bring joy! - But some would rather write them than read them. Photo: CRH, 2009?
I think it depends what you want to write. For some, it might be an idea just to start writing without any previous plan, and see how things pan out. But in your case, it seems you will be writing a work with a strong plot and characters. I've never done something like that before; but I feel it could be a good idea to create some kind of journal (or weblog) beforehand. Whereby you might plan out the plot from beginning to end, as well as the characters; perhaps even the motivations of the characters. For folks writing an autobiographical book, which it seems is the path for so many first-time writers, all this would of course not be necessary. All i can say is: good luck.

I'm writing a book and what I found out you must read a lot and study creative writing and brush up on your grammar. What I did was go to the library and check out a book about writing creatively. Now, I'm writing several short stories and a eBook. Get the writing essentials down and you won't have to much trouble with your writings.

Hey I began writing a fantasy book almost an year ago just because I wanted to read a book like that and I couldn't find one. I though why shouldn't I write a book like that ? I have imagination, I just need some discipline to put my thoughts in order. I didn't know all the things about the world in it when I began but I figured it out while I was writing. It's very fun, I learned a lot of new words, expressions, so it's an asset for me even now and the book is not finished. I suggest you think of a sketch for the book. The most basic things and then begin to write and elaborate on that sketch. I don't have any writers in my family and my parents were a little shocked and they still don't take it very seriously, my hand writing is so ugly, thank God for computers so you might say that I may not be the most qualified for the job but shortly after I began writing I decided that no matter what others say I will keep writing and I'll spend time to make this book a very good one and I will publish it. So before anyone else you have to believe in yourself. I wish you luck :)!

Well good luck, I think fantasy is the best genre, although the most popular is crime, I don't understand why it is so popular to write crime books, although fantasy has seen a surge with some rather inelegant titles such as Twilight, and H.P. The classic fantasy books are buried kind of deep within the fantasy genre, so there are not so many newcomers that get to them. But good luck with your book.

Yes.Whatever u said is correct.U should have a clear idea before going to write a book.U should understand people psychology, their thinking etc. What ever u want to write, and the purpose of writing should be understandable by everyone. That much clearly u should write.U should do some research before writing.

Yes research is important, although I want to write a fantasy novel, research is all the planning, and writing exercises, I probably need some exercises to make my longer writings easier to swallow.
