Do you read other user's comments before you respond?

According to one of the points I've read somewhere in the FAQs of MyLot is that it is important that the user should read other users' comments first before giving a response of their own... It might be to prevent a similar form of answer and/or to allow the user to make another creative and informative response that can contribute to the discussions. Do you read all the other comments in a discussion you took an interest and responded on?

You saw that in the Guidelines: http://www.mylot.com/o/guidelines.aspx I can honestly say that I do read all of the responses before posting my own. Not only that but while I am reading them, if there is a response that I feel I can add something to, I will leave a comment. I think that it is there because mylot is a discussion site. There is no point in leaving a response that says the same thing as another user has already said in a previous response. Much better to join in and leave a comment in that box. We can even get a back and forth discussion going there too. When I see users complaining that the earnings are low I often wonder if they read previous responses or if they just post their own. If it is similar to a previous one I doubt that they will earn for it - but they don't seem to bother

First, let me commend you on your effort to really read and take note of user responses and your effort to respond uniquely from others. You raise lots of points here. MyLot do have a unique way of paying users for their participation. In simple terms, their pay is not constant. And because of that, the algorithm they use to pay users kinda makes me curious. lol Then there's the response that could be similar to what another user had already responded...copying of answers is not very popular (supposed to be) here in MyLot.

There is another important reason why it pays to read other responses before posting our own too. Unfortunately sometimes there are users who think that it is fine to copy an article from another site and post it as a topic. That is plagiarism which is an offence and the topic will be deleted when admin sees it. There are many Lotters who spot these topics and warn both the user who posted the topic and they also leave a response warning other users not to respond because they will lose their post when the topic is deleted. I am so disappointed when I see a warning and then more responses following on directly below the response with the warning The user who posted the warning will earn nothing and has wasted their own time to warn others but it would appear that some just don't have the time to read and prefer to waste their time too Copying of answers is also plagiarism and not allowed.

If you're the first to the answer then I think there is no problem. But what if you're responding to a discussion that has already a lot of responses? There is a possibility that your answer might be similar to another person's, right? So that is the importance of reading responses first before contributing anything to your discussion of interest.

maybe i'm not well expressed myself. I means that when i read the item with the reading i know what i want to answer then the risk that also somewhere else have the same comment with the same words isn't great

I know it's suggested in myLot's guidelines to read other responses before responding to a discussion but I do not most of the time. All I can offer is my honest advice and hope it's good. If I get curious after I've posted my comment, I may read a few responses to see where others are coming from but as a rule I simply move on.

hi sinfulrose I read some of the others responses to s discussionl here in my log. response is what we give to a discussion, comment is what we comment on others responses. they really do not' mean the same thing. anyway I do not read all fifty if there is a lot and I do depend on my own brain to make a response that is my own and uniquely mine.I know that is in the guidelines which i do read and have read. but I like to depend on my own thinking processes and feel mine will not be just like someone else's. responses to a discussions, comments on responses.

Thanks for that info and your opinion, Hatley! I'll be sure to keep the differences between comment and response in mind. Sometimes I mix them up because of certain social-networking sites...if you know what I mean. As for your opinion, you also have a point. You can't read all responses if they are more than what you can handle. But you do skim and scan around, right? If you can't read all of them, it's still better to know at least what was already contributed and know what you can add up, right?

I generally tend to read them out of interest, or on a topic where the same answer to a question looking for information nay already have been made. But sometimes if I'm short on time and it's where I feel my response will definitely be different in some way or unique, I just post away.

I guess I am the odd man OUT, here! Out of respect, I feel everyone has the right to be heard (in this case, read!) Their comments are as significant on the topic as mine..and something they say, may or may not give me another perspective on the topic OR, for that matter, vary my response! Which now brings up another question...If one does not read all the responses, how doe's one rate them? Just blanket rating? Once again, I guess odd man out, as I believe everyone deserves a plus rating if justified, and negative rating, only in dire straits! Only twice in my time here! I have very limited time here, as I work several jobs...but if you took time to type it...I can make time to read it, out of respect!

I did read your other discussion regarding this topic and do find all comments interesting! I hold steadfast on my commitments to the values that I place on other's comments, before I add my own...as I feel I cannot rate them PLUS where I feel there is value! For me, the negative rating, does not exist...as each has a right to an opinion. @January5th....GOOD band, BAD name (OOPs, wrong, so many people are in "dire straights!")

You have a point here. And I don't think you're the "odd man". You just gave your opinion and that's great for me because I got a valuable information from you. Users rate other users so how can users rate a user if he/she does not read the responses or the comments of such responses? I think I got another great idea coming from this response alone, you know.

If you don't read everyone's response then you might post the same thing that someone else had posted and then your time would be wasted anyway

Other's opinions are basically important before i do respond, but most of the time, i quite agree with the responses by co-mylotters, and i would just usually try to compliment when i think something is missing or try to subtly argue when something does not seem to be right, of course in my opinion.

That is good. It is our responsibility to inform another user if there are discrepancies. It is also good to contribute another good information to the public because people might need it. I like your style!

I always enjoy reading the discussions and think everyone can have a slightly different spin on topics though some are similar. That's the way to do it I think read what others have to say. It will not be much of a discussion without that happening. I mean it has to do with the guidelines of course but also from just the enjoyment side where you can feel part of a discussion if we read each other. There is an exception to this. Sometimes I skip over someones comment if it is extremely negative but this is a personal choice I exercise because in this day and age I don't personal need any more negativity. It is good though that there are so many different kinds of comments and they don't all have to agree of course.

I read everybody's comments, maybe not from the first letter t the last, but I do - that's why i often give up to respond to a topic that otherwise interests me. There are times when I don't read them all - when there are 4-5 pages of replies or more. That seems impossible.

I can understand how you feel. Sometimes I just feel lazy reading them all... especially when responses are more than 5 pages already. It takes up too much time when I can use it to earn more by participating on more discussions. But when the pages are just less than 4, I tend to read them and sometimes, if I like the response or comment, I would rate them. How about you?

That's what I find intriquing...long discussions, like a good book, that you don't want to put down.

Sometimes those discussions with over 5 pages are really interesting, and it would be worth reading them all. I like to rate the answers I like too, though when I started and after that for a while I wasn't aware of this option.

Not all the time. There are times I don't read the comments especially if the discussion has too many responses. It is time consuming and I have no more time to post my response. But, thanks for this info sinfulrose. I will keep this in my mind. Happy mylotting!

i try to make it a point to read all the responses but i will admit i do not always i guess it depends on how much time i have before i respond. i do this because i would hate to read the same responses over and over again. it is also really intersting to see how other mylotters think :) i do not ususally comment on what someone else has said unless i just really have an important point to make or i want to know more about something they said.

It is in the guidelines, but not a lot of people do it. I used to a long time ago, but now I don't. It can take forever to get through it all and I am here to earn on my days off or on short days or well just whenever I have free time. I do try to make an informative response either way and I do read the discussion itself, just not necessarily the other responses until I make my own.

Generally I not read the comments of any person before respond. But if I not understand the discussion then read the respond of others for understanding the contents.

I can say that I kinda read what other people have commented. Most of the time I do not read everything people post. Sometimes there is alot of people that have commented on things. But I do read at least 3 or 4 comments to kinda get an idea of what other people have thought about but also read them so that I do not copy what they have said cause I now people to post the same thing at times and I now that the person that posted it does not want to read the same thing per and over again.
