I am depressed. It is just unbelievable how this movie is performing in the US Box Office. The story of this movie is simply the father to many, many Sci-Fi movies, such as Star Wars and Avatar, that people have loved and enjoyed for many, many years. And yet, a lot of people who watched the film keep complaining that the movie is a rip-off of those sci-fi films. I think nowadays, people just keep looking after the action but don't really necessarily seek for sense in movies.
This movie is well-made. It is not perfect but I could not have imagined any better embodiment of the Burroughs novel. A lot of people missed what it is about and just kept asking for more action, which the movie actually have anyways. Looking at the number of critics who had dismissed the film, I'm quite concerned if they indeed watch the movie, or at least read something about it prior to watching the movie. There is just so much bad buzz about the movie, when it is actually a movie that is better in any that I have seen so far.
The problem now is that since it's not doing so well, it looks as if we won't be seeing any more of John Carter and company's adventure after the first movie. There still so much to explore, and quite frankly it is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. If you haven't see it yet, don't listen to the bad buzz, or the critics that don't know better. Go see it with your family, I'm sure you'll have tremendous amounts of fun.

I am planning on going to see this movie. I personally never listen to the critics because most times they get it wrong. If I see the previews for a movie or read the book and think it will be a good movie then I will go check it out for myself. It would be a real shame if people didn't make the decision on their own!

I agree. I do check RottenTomatoes.com though to see what percentage of critics liked a certain film. In this movies case though, it's different. All of my favorite critics liked the film anyways. There's just so much love by the filmmakers in doing this film, and you can feel that translate on the screen. Enjoy and let me know your feedback.
Cheers!

I don't think that the trailer makes it easy to know that the movie is sci fi. I looks more like a gladiator movie. It may confuse people that way because who ever heard of a gladiator named John Carter?

theres various trailers.. the first teaser looking really like a teleporter person..in a scifi world..but later on..all the trailers showing too much monster fighting..make it looks like Conan in somekinf of war zone world..lol

The only one I've seen is the brief Conan type one. I think its rather short also so you don't see much.

Really?! The John Carter movie has such bad critics?
My grandmother told me it was alright and I was planning to ask my family if they also wanted to watch such movie. My mom is excited to see it...and honestly so do I.
I'll take your advice and see it, then. I want to know what the actual plot is all about. I hope it's worth the value of our ticket.

At the moment, RottenTomatoes.com has it on 51% who favors the film. I'm not sure what the other half saw but I was easily teleported to Mars. I'm sure you and your family will love it.
Screw the critics. Lately all they say yes to are George Clooney movies and movies in black and white. Go out there and have fun with the movie. Most of the Yahoo! users did enjoy it. Everyone else I've asked who's seen it enjoyed it as well.

i havent seen this...maybe tomorrow or few days from now..
i think this is not really a good movie..even the action..looks liek too much to be believable.. The movie must be believable..like the MATRIX..we all know it just a movie..but the storyline must be glued to perfection so that viewers will have a sense of realism to the movie theyre watching..
But hey..i havents seen this.. the traielers and various preview clips ..i have seen plus ur discussion here..make me so sure it gonna suck..
but .anyway..i wont knock it .till i seen it..
cheers...

in the matrix..the story already describe in details of how they actually" trapped ina computer world..where at first..Neo..thought he is in a real world.. later only the whole audience were treated to a spectacular computer induced false world..i used it as a comparison..because the show how a way off..film can still glued the audience to belive in an unbelievable story..unlike JOHN CARTER...written before anyone gone to the moon.. MARS..its trully unbelievable to be..ermm..u guess it.. breathe?or socialized..since we know for 99percent fact ..no one lives in mars..
JOhn carter can be "term as a FANTASY movie..instead of scifi..scifi usually must based on factual or things that are possible with science.. Fantsay can be like Pirate of Carribean..etc..
anywway... im ranked 111.. in this movie section..i must probably at least know what im talkingabout..and lot of stars...over here in MyLot..

I think the only way to find out if it is believable is to actually watch the movie. One cannot judge the believability of the film merely by just watching the trailers or reading reviews. Are you aware of the storyline of John Carter? I agree with one of the responses here that some TV spots make it out to look like JC is a gladiator. He is not. When I watched the film, I felt like I was taken to Mars alright. I think that's saying a lot about the "believability" of the film. Plus I hate it when people keep looking for "realism" in movies. It's the movies! If anything you go to watch a movie to suspend disbelief, so unless you're looking to watch a documentary, it is expected, especially for sci-fi films, that you would suspend disbelief.
It's quite funny how you use The Matrix as an example of believability and sense of realism. I mean, really? In terms of realism, I think John Carter is more believable than The Matrix.

Thanks for encouraging us to still watch the film. I have planned on watching it but because I'm currently busy with a lot of things lately I haven't watched it yet... and have not read bad critics yet too.

My boyfriend and I are going to see it this weekend because we are both big science fiction fans, but you are right, this film isn't doing as well as many people thought it would do and could be because of some of the people who are behind the movie. Sometimes, the cast and the people who are directing or producing the film can make all of the difference in the success of the film. I think that this film might be a good film, but people just aren't giving it a chance.

The first thing everyone should remember - if the critics hate it, it is probably a pretty good movie. If they love it, it is usually a terrible movie with a few exceptions.

When I first heard John Carter's promo on the radio, it thought it was an animation thanks to that line, "You're ugly, but you're beautiful." Then I saw the promo on television.
I haven't watch it yet but I think I'll add it to my list. I don't feel like going to the cinema alone right now so it might as well wait.
