...I was really, really disappointed

Every day, I always try to read the two leading newspaper here in the country – PDI and Philstar. I do this to fish for information and opinions regarding the issues in our country. However, I was shocked when heading the cover of the PDI today. The headlines weren’t the one which shocked me but the photos taken of Mr. Vicente, a defense witness in the impeachment trial. Mr. Vicente’s close-up shots were expressions that were results of his survival from two strokes. I cannot even have the ability to describe the pictures. My issue with this is that I expected more form PDI. They were always named as a an intelligent publication and some of the people sympathize with them when a major player in the newspaper died with stroke (coincidence I’m sure). I kinda expected them to be more sensitive to Mr. Vicente, regardless of who is witnessing for. In addition, they should have been sensitive also to the Vicente family and their readers who have families with stroke. For their part, PDI already apologized and I hope they also do so in their newspaper’s edition tomorrow. But even then, it is a low-blow in my opinion. Not sure if I’m even gonna visit or read that paper anytime soon.

it was really uncalled for to print those pictures on a front page. the philippine daily inquirer could do much more than that and people expect them to be the number one newspaper in the philippines. it should act and behave like it is. the front page pictures make it look like it is a tabloid seeking attention from the public.

I guess this backlash will make them think twice before publishing anything again. I read some comments regarding this issue and some of them are very interesting to read. I remembered that they claimed more subscriptions compared to the other two leading newspapers. I guess that they still want to retain their readers by issuing that apology.
