Can watching TV be a hobby?

I think that I watch too much TV, but I can't stop. I don't have a job right now (I am looking). I do some housework, watch TV, do more housework, watch more TV. It's kinda like a hobby for me now. Although, I have a problem with just sitting there watching TV, so I always need to have a pencil and paper to doodle on. I can't just let my hands sit still. They always have to be doing something. When my husband and I go out to eat with our friends, I talk about TV shows. I think it annoys them sometimes. They have jobs to talk about, but I don't. They talk about people that they work with, I talk about people that I watch. They talk about funny things that happened at work, I talk about funny things that happened in a TV show. They get annoyed because TV isn't real life and they think it's a waste of time.

I would not call wathcing tv as a hobby since it is not a hobby that I would go for. I think you should minimize the number of hours that you spend watching tv and try to engage yourself in other ways. If you find your friends gets bored by your stories about tv shows then you can try and talk about common issues like politics or what is happening in the world rather than talking about tv shows.

That would definitely be a better topic to talk about.

I don't like politics, but I can talk about children. They have children so they can relate to that.

No, watching TV is not a hobby, its just a way to refresh yourself or to pass time. Even watching a particular show daily on TV is not a hobby. If TV is bore try playing some video games on it, there is a hell lot of games out in the market. You'll definitely like at least one.

TV is not boring to me. It's boring to others when I talk about it. This one couple that we do a lot with hardly ever watches TV or movies. Do you play a lot of video games?

I know many people watch a lot of television and I'm one of them. See my level on this post and you will know it has to be true. My suggestion is to take television breaks and come write on Mylot. I don't watch television while writing replies to articles.

Wow! You are high in the ranking. It's good to know that other people watch it a lot also. What shows/movies do you like? I like forensics, mysteries, movies with twists, and comedies

Of course watching TV is one of the hobbies. It is as well as listening to music. It can relax yourself. It is nothing wrong with it. But if you are addicted to it all the time, then it is not a good habit and that is all. I love China

Hobby is defined as something that one loves to do. If you love what you're doing, then it's a hobby. Watching a TV show is one of our stress buster. It's not a waste of time because we can learn from something that we're watching but it depends on the show that you're watching.

I don't watch 'learning' shows like National Geographic, the History channel or CNN. I like forensic shows like CSI, NCIS, and Criminal minds so I learn stuff there, assuming it's accurate information since it's a show. I also watch the Tru TV channel. They do a lot with real life forensics on that channel.

Yeah, it's nice relaxing in front of the TV after doing house work or yard work. I just have too much time on my hands since I'm not working outside the home.

Yeah, that's what I should do. My hands have to be busy all the time, so I usually doodle. A lot of shows that I watch are mysteries or who done it type so it's easy to miss a clue if I'm too distracted with something else. How nice that you are doing that for your daughter and her friends. How old is she?

If television fuels your conversation you're definitely watching too much! How about going for a walk or reading a book instead of watching a show? Do some gardening or sit down and write a letter, a journal, or send someone a card via snail mail. Watch a news show instead of a sitcom or movie. I don't have a job, either, so I know something of what you're going through. I start my day reading all the news on the internet while I have my coffee. Then I come here. Then I write articles to help with my finances. I won't let myself watch TV till 5PM then it's the news and news shows until 7PM. After that I can watch anything I want but I keep up on all the latest events--it helps with conversation!

LOL! Your first paragraph made me laugh. I AM watching too much! I don't like to garden but I do like to read. I used to write letters all the time, but then email and facebook came about. I like the quicker responses that we get with email and facebook. I should do some painting. I love to paint, whether I'm painting the walls in my home or painting a picture on canvas. Maybe I'll try to watch more news shows and get good real life stuff to talk to friends about. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a laptop that I work on sometimes while watching TV. That would be hard to watch a really good show or movie and then have to keep it in so you don't give anything away to others.

Yes it can. Watching The History Channel is a hobby of mine. I think The History Channel has many great programs. Whenever I watch it, I always learn something new.

My husband loves the history channel. That's what he watches when he watches TV, which isn't very often. I should watch it more, and other shows where I can learn new things.

Hiya heres, I do like watching Television but I just do not have the time. Right now I am trying to get to watch "The Adventures of Merlin" but they all keep changing the Channels so what I do sometimes is to give up record it on the Dvd and watch this kind of program when I can. Football reigns here I am very much afraid so I have to have that for Breakfast, Dinner and Tea as the main subject why don´t I complain to them then eh? Football is great in small quantities but if you are like me you can get really fed up with them. Another one likes watching the News over and over oh boy I only want to watch one Program not half a dozen like they do. I can´t talk to anyone about what I watch either they are not that way inclined. Hope you can get a Job again but if you can´t there is nothing wrong with watching Tv at all it is a great company keeper for many out there.xxx

It is a lot of fun watching television as a hobby. Most of people like to watch television because it is act a good entertainment. I like to watch series in AXN channel, which have my favorite (CSI) Crime scene investigation. There are also have good program like America Idol, you got talent and so on. Everyday i watch and i won't miss it from daily life. It is being a part of my life, as well as a good friend too. Sometime it is taught a experience or gain knowledge watch some program in National Geographic. We cannot simply say watching television is waste of time or useless. I won't say watching television is waste of time.

Watching TV is a very inactive hobby, if you have some loose cash I would have an activity with your husband, learn how to dance or play badmington or go for walks ride your bikes.

My husband works from 6am to 6-8pm. Long days! He doesn't like to dance or play tennis or badmitten. He loves to be outside working on the house, yard or garage. That's what he does on the weekends. He hates to watch TV so that's why I watch it mostly during the day when no one is home. We go for walks in the evening. We don't have bikes, although I've been wanting to get one. I should get one after we get our tax refund.

It does get to be a habit when you don't have a job and just have the TV to sit in front of. My brother has a job but he is constantly sitting in front of the TV when he comes home, I think he must watch it four hours out of the six he is home after work. I think thats why too much. He still thinks he doesn't watch it that much, and on weekend he will watch it more, sometimes at least an hour in the morning and in the afternoon besides the other four hours at night. he never goes out at night or goes out with a girlfriend anywhere, he only has dated once long ago and it seems his TV is most important to him. You can't talk while it is on, you have to wait for the commercials, unless he feels it is OK to talk then he will talk first usually. He does get mad alot though if someone mistakenly talks when he is watching, he watches in the living room as there is just one TV so it gets to be hard not to say anything while he is watching every single night here. And I mean every, unless I have the night to watch my shows alone or with someone which I have had to almost fight over to get to see, these past few years. He tells me my shows are "sheet" (well you know the real word I wanna use here) and stuff like that on occasion where as I never say that about his.

It doesn't make me mad when someone talks to or interrupts me while I'm watching a show. It does bother me when there is a movie on that I have not seen and have waited for a long time to watch. Then I get mad. The thing is, I tell people ahead of time when I'm going to watch a movie that I don't want to be interrupted, but they still interrupt and act like they didn't know. Oh well, in the grand scheme of things, life is more important than movies. My friend lived with his brother and his wife and 2 yr old. He complained because the 2 yr old's toys were in the same room with the TV. He didn't know how kids were, how they talk and jabber when playing and use the whole room that their toys are in. He complained that when he was watching a show the 2 yr old would walk right in front of the TV and just stand there playing and jabbering. I had young ones so I knew that that's what they did. I think it was very naive and selfish of him since his brother and family was generous enough to let him live with them for awhile.

Sure..I think TV can be a hobby. Especially if you implement it into things you do or talk about. I think of TV as kind of a hobby too.

I don't have a regular job at the moment now either, and I admit I watch quite a bit of TV, especially in the background of doing other things. I don't think it should be considered a hobby though because a hobby implies actually doing something. Watching television is a passive activity, and in my own personal opinion, a bad habit when it's done too much. There's nothing wrong with joking about an episode you saw with others who enjoy the show, or watching your favorite television show, but it shouldn't consume you. There are so many things to actively do, and watching others really isn't real life. I think if you find yourself doodling while watching TV, you should try spending some time drawing. It could be a much more active hobby that will give you something great to talk about with others.
