Eating Crab..

Having visited the US,particularly New England,I've experienced the Speciality Clam chowder and crab cakes there..Yum! I caught part of a programme last night about Shellfish catching in Cornwall-these guys are catching shellfish such as Lobster and Spider crab, but demand for their catch is so Low,they're only able to sell to a limited specialist market.in fact, one of the best places for them to sell their crab catch is across the Channel in Brittany,France, where transport costs multiply the sale price a fair bit.. And Yet,on the day of a local boat race in the Cornish port, the presenter held a crabmeat tasting for the visitors, some of whom had never tried crab before..the almost unsellable (in UK) meat was rated 2 or 3x more highly than regular crab..It's like catch 22 (fishing gag intended!) If the product's not being promoted,it won't sell..if it's not selling, the market will stay limited... Do you Enjoy crab? ever hear of Cornish Crab?

Never heard of Cornish Crab. I get crab cakes at the store. Love crab and lobster but can't eat it much. Too expensive. We may not have any soon. We get it sometimes at Sizzler but it isn't the best. Too salty.

Sounds as though they should dial back on the salt in the recipe if the taste is putting people off going back for it..

Too much in food is offputting, apart from the high sodium levels for people with heart related issues..I never pick up condiments before trying my food, yet often see people shaking salt over something without even touching it!

I am just VERY sensitive to salt and I think alot of people really like it and don't notice it like I do.

I was born and raised in Maryland, east coast of the USA, also known as the "Steamed Crab State". I grew up eating steamed crabs and LOVE THEM!!! I used to catch my own crabs (blue crabs) before I moved. There was a river near the Chesapeake Bay with a pier everyone was allowed to go fishing and crabbing from. I'd get there early, throw my 10 crab traps out (the limit is 10 if you have no license), then see what fish I could catch while waiting for the crabs to find the bait in the traps. There's no taste like freshly caught crabs. Funny thing, I moved about 100 miles west of Baltimore five years ago and no one around here is crazy about steamed crabs. I miss them so much! Oh, we can buy steamed crabs that have been packaged and placed in the cold section of the grocery store but they're nothing like freshly steamed crabs, hot out of the steamer, covered in Old Bay seasoning. You've never tasted a steamed crab like Maryland's steamed crabs, I guarantee it. I'm a lobster lover as well although the crabs are at the top of my shellfish list. We can get lobsters anywhere around here but they're terribly expensive because they aren't caught locally and must be shipped in. I think I may have to move to Cornwall. They could sell their entire catch of crabs and lobsters to ME!

Steamed crabs sound good...and you were able to catch your own? respect!..I may have helped the Cornish crab industry out here!

England (And the rest of the UK!) has noted regions where fishing would be a staple industry..Cornwall,home to the UK's southernmost point,(Land's End) would be one of those regions..

I don't know enough about crabs to be aware if they're available all over the world..I do know there are cold water and warm water crabs,though..If there is a fishing industry where you live, and crabs are available,I'm sure someone would be out there fishing for them!

hi there, yeah i enjoy eating crab especially opening it with just my hands hehehe. in my country especially where i live, crab is enjoyed by people. it is a bit expensive but still so many people buy it. too bad it is not good for our health. i haven't heard of Cornish crab but i just searched on it and i think it looks like the common crab that we have here. i am sure that tastes good too?

I don't know how many different species of crab there are around the world, but "Cornish Crab" just indicates that these ones are being landed in the ports of Cornwall in the UK..they could well be "Common Crab",but the type getting most attention in this show was known as "Spider Crab"-bigger,and more tasty, from what I saw!

Crab, both Dungeness and REd Rock, are a staple in our diet here, off the West Coast of British Columbia! Seasonal, mind you, as they have their mating and moulting season...whenst the are off limits! A feast of shellfish, (crab, clams, mussels, & oysters, limpets)..and Salmon, Cod (many species)....OOPS forgot Scallops & Octopus, Shrimp and Prawns are common, and just the cost of a license! And of course, the equipment to harvest..so am really spoiled...and LOVE my seafood!

The show pointed out only one lobster egg in thousands makes it to become a mature adult..there's an initiative where egg carrying females are taken to a fisheries facility in the area where the eggs are protected until they hatch and reach a juvenile stage of development before being returned to the sea..hopefully they'll be better prepared to evade predators with the head start..

That is very interesting data and I like that they are being pro-active, as so many of our natural worths can be over-harvested! Even tho' we have catch/harvest limits, some re-inforcements....it always chagrins me when I find persons harvesting more than allowed! There is one specific immigrant that comes to our beaches, in the dark of night, with generators, for light and to run huge vacuum systems to "reap" clams...NOT ALLOWED! But, I live in a somewhat isolated Island chain...and by the time the authorities get here...they are gone! As a citizen, or citizen's...you do not approach these poachers...as they are armed with high-powered rifles! It is extremely sad to see this abuse of our natural resources...but the poachers have figured out all the angles...and DARE us to stop them! It's too dangerous!
