Hi mylotters!
Would you rather travel with the help of a travel agency, may it be a vacation or for some other purposes or would you just do it on your own??.. What are the advantages and disadvantages of going through this travel agencies??
I got a friend who will visit my country this summer and he's wondering about what's best to do. Need your advices.

I traveled a lot and I prefer traveling without getting involved with travel agencies. I tried to go on a vacation with travel agency and they made mistakes and plus they charged you more, just based on my experience. What I don't like also of getting a travel agency is you have to follow their time, like for example, you are scheduled of going to a certain place, you have to be there on time or else the tour guide will leave you. I only need a travel agency if I need to book a flight coz they will give you a better deal.

Oh that sounds good. And yes, I also think it costs more expensive through them. Hmm.. so that means that these travel agencies could book you a flight in no time??.. If it is, then that sounds realy great!..
I've never been out of my country, so I am still clueless about this stuff.
thanks chicgale! ;)

hello :). Whenever I'm going to travel I ask myself that same question. Which I choose depends on where I'm going. If I am traveling to a country with people I know closely and I can stay with, then I travel without agencies, since all I really need to do it get the plane an coordinate with my friends and it ends up being cheaper doing it by myself since there's nothing else to organize . However, if I don't know anyone on the country I'm going to, or if I know someone but we aren't that close, I use an agency because they sometimes have deals with hotels and can fix transportation on the country, saving me a lot of time in there. However if they offer me vacation packages I always decline, since I find tours and excursions boring and restricting, and ofter they are a lot more expensive than sightseeing on my own. However, I always use a childhood friend that became an agent, so I can trust her, because I have heard that it is common for agencies to disappear with people's money at the last minute. So what your friend can do depend on how close you two are. Can he stay with you in your house? Can you take time to go around sightseeing with him? Or do you prefer for him to stay at a hotel and can only take one day or two to walk around? If he can stay with you and you can guide him, then an agent can't really help a lot, since he could get good prices getting tickets on the internet by himself. But if he's gonna need an hotel, transportation and, if he's less adventure-y than me, tours and sightseeing groups then a travel agent can help a lot always remembering to find one he can trust.

One of the disadvantages of having to travel with the help of a travel agency is that it is sometimes more expensive than exploring a tourist destination on your own. Plus, they have a set itinerary that won't be ideal for those who love to explore more on what a place has to offer. But having a travel agent is ideal for those who don't want the hassle of planning where to go. The travel agent will arrange for these trips and all the tourist will have to do is sit back and get off when the bus or van stops.
My friends and I prefer to explore places on our own. This may mean most of the time lugging our baggage across town to try and find a place to stay. But we have more control of our time and where we want to go. And we are able to go to those small shops run by locals that most travel guides won't have you stop because they will have the tourists go to big shops.

One of my friends always uses a travel agency, because he thinks he is easier and more relaxing that way since he doesn't have to worry about the practical things. Personally I prefer to travel without a travel agency. I prefer to find information online and book tickets and hotel rooms online. I am not interested in the packages that the travel agencies offer, I prefer to pick out my own transportation, accomodation, restaurants and sights. That way I get exacly the trip that I want to.
When you decide if you want to use a travel agency or not you have to consider two things I think. If you are willing to and able to do your own reseach and book our own tickets and accomodation online, you can plan your own trip, and that way you will have the freedom to make your own decisions about everything. If you prefer to avoid worries about all the practical things you can contact a travel agency and let them handle the practical things for you. If you want to visit another country and need a visa the travel agency can arrange a visa for you, and that can be an advantage if you are travelling to a countries where it is complicated to get a visa.
The second thing that you have to consider is the price. Sometimes travel agencies can get group discounts that you can't get as an individual traveller and sometimes it is cheaper to travel on your own.

I book my flights many times with a travel acency, if the price is good. But I donĀ“t like a package where I have to go along with several people. I like to see things at my own pace and in my own schedule.

hi there,
every time my boyfriend and i travel, we do it ourselves because it is cheaper. but most of the time, he just surprises me with these trips.
if he is just going to visit you then i think it is better to just look at airlines on the web and see how it is. but if he's not comfortable doing it then he can always have a travel agent book him. but he can try it first on his own.

I think its best to coursed through the flight transactions with a travel agency or if not, to book online under some of the airlines promo fares. This is to save some money and be able to divert it to other purposes. It is also convenient on our part because they will be the one to prepare our itinerary, like hotel accommodations, transportation, etc.

I can travel with the help of Travel Agency because my sister in law has her own business in Travel Agency and until now it is working strong. At least we are updated right away with the promos.

To me only the destination and price counts. If it's cheaper to travel with an agency I go that way (frequently don't use everything they offer) if it's cheaper to go on my own I travel that way.
So I would advice to look at the prices (cheaper way of travelling, hotel incl food or not, etc) and decide after that what to do.
To some a helping hand abroad is usefull too, to others it doesn't matter or a travel insurance will do too.
