Why do people always assume others have bad motives?

Some people are always implying bad motives on the part of others who are doing good deeds. When they see people donating a lot of money, they assume that those people want to show off their riches. When they read that an anonymous donor has donated a large sum of money, especially in cash, they assume that this particular person has done something bad, and wants to atone for his sin. Do you know people who are like that? They do not want to do good, and then they imply that others have bad motives for doing good. How do you feel about people like that?

I have not known anyone who donated because of a bad motive. I remember when I was young my employer donated turkeys at Thanksgiving to shelters and told me when I delivered them to be sure to get a receipt. I thought that was just awful, that they were donating just for a tax write-off! As I grew older, though, I thought back on that and was sorry for thinking that way. Sure, I take the write-off, too, but on my income it doesn't make much difference in how much I pay. Those people didn't have all the money I thought they did and they truly had good hearts. I donate to celebrate the blessings God has given me and to obey His command to help the poor. I am not rich but for the first time in my life I have some extra money and every time I send out a check to a charity I thank God for giving me the means to do some small thing to help others. Sure, it makes me feel good. But if I was not able to give money I would give time or donate my skills to help as I have before. I don't give to show off my "riches" although I know that some probably do. I give in order to give praise to God for all He has given me and to help my brothers and sisters in Christ. We are all one family in God's eyes. And I think that most people who give to charities do so out of the goodness of their hearts. Most of them don't make a big deal of it and don't seek publicity. I'm grateful for those people.

Hi Dragon54u, yes, when we are older, we tend to see things differently. Even if donation is made for the tax benefits, the good will is still valid. I think it is bad of us if we assume that those who donate for tax write-off are not as good as those who make anonymous donation. I think as long as we have the means and the will to do good, we will feel happier that the money is used to help others.

No I don't know or ever met anyone who wants to do good. But what I know for sure that is if you are donating you can get that money back from the tax you have to pay over your income. This is the case in my country but also in many other countries. Which means you are not donating really or donating way less as the amount you gave, since you get it all or the biggest part back from the tax. Which is a positive thing for your income. If it comes to bad motives: I think many people do give for some reason and mostly because it makes them feel/better. Personally I don't care about the reason as long as it will be used for those who need it. Which is seldom the fact either. The biggest part of donations stays in own country in the hand of the director etc (those who don't need it and have a large income). What I don't understand is why giving a large amount to always the same organisations? Why not giving to the small once or if you really want to help out go visit those who need it and give each of them an certain amount.

Hi Wakeupkitty, actually the personal income tax rate here is very low. Those who earn less than $20,000 a year do not need to pay tax at all. If they are making anonymous donation, there is definitely not tax benefit. Most of the people here pays about 2% to 4$ personal income tax for income above $20,000. That means if you earn $40,000, you just need to pay $400 in income tax. In this case, if you donate $1000 to charity, and gets the tax benefit, you will save just $20 in taxation. That is very little compared to the amount that you have donated. Over here, there is a central body that collects the charity donations, and disperse to more than 300 small organizations. In this case, we know that the amount donated is put to good cause.

I think this is human nature. We assume people have bad motives to protect ourselves by being ready in case what we're expecting is true. If you're suffering from being assumed at as someone who has bad motives, you'll have no problem proving them wrong everytime by just being yourself.

Hi Frontvisions, I think most people are too trusting until they have bad experience at work. Then they become persons who do not trust others at all. They think that everyone has hidden agenda, and that people always have bad motives even when they are doing good.

Well to be fair, I think that many people think that others have bad motives, is because many people out there do have those bad motives. Of course, there are some people out there who do good, for good, but we live in a society, where that is kind of swept right to the side for the most part. And many people do in fact have an agenda. It is rather frustrating as you never know what a person is thinking. And when that happens, you start to wonder. Of course, the point is moot as these people do not really have to explain themselves. Just like we don't really have to trust them. Everyone does things for many reasons, to atone for the bad, just to do good, and just because they felt like it on that day.

Hi Megamatt, most of us have a mixture of good and bad motives when we do something good or bad. Even bad guys can have a soft spot for certain people or animal. Come to think about it, even animals and fish have similar weird friendship between prey and predator. Many hobbyists notice that their fierce Oscar fish eat up all the feeder goldfish, except for one. It seems to like this one goldfish, and makes friend with it. In the end, the goldfish becomes a big fat fish.

Some people are really bad that they assume that other people are doign bad things even they are not. That's really because it is an illusion for the bad guy to think so.Anyway, just do more good thigns and get good reward and gratitude.Think more of other people's positive actions.

Hi Jricky, yes, they are the ones who cannot bear to part with their money to help the poor. When they see how generous others are, they start to think bad things about those people. They will say that those people have bad motives, and that they do not believe anyone will do good without asking for a good return.

those are negative people, there are some like that, maybe they inherit to their surrounding, experience in life or had a problem thats why they became like, they feel insecure with other people. Maybe they need counselling.

Hi Arianne, those people who always think others have bad motives do not believe in counselling. They will think that they are the only ones who are sane, and others need counselling. I think we tend to view people based on our values. If we believe that others are inherently good, we will not even think that they have certain hidden agenda when they do something good.

Hi Academic, that is not the right view too. If we do not trust others, we will not feel happy. The way to trust others is to trust and to verify. We cannot trust our family for handling money right if they do not have the knowledge to do so, but we can trust that they will take care of us if we are sick. This is just one way of trusting people.

Yeah I know some. They often think people around them are no better than them. So if someone does something great or if someone succeeded in doing something they always think there is always something behind it. Maybe these people had been cheated on before or fooled before that is why it is pretty hard for them to trust people around them.

Hi Clouds, I think these people are just too selfish, and they still think that they are better than all the rest of humanity. If they really are so good, they will not be so quick to judge others. I think having God in our life will change a person for good. At least we know that all the deeds we have done are not forgotten by God, and that we will reap the fruitage sooner or later. People who like to judge others, and assume bad motives, never do much good in their lives. If they are regular donors to charities, they will not think that others have bad motives. They will assume that others are equally compassionate and have the intention to help others who are less fortunate.

If it just so happened that person has done good things before then it turns out that it has change then probably the observant would think that way forever even if that person is already sincere enough of helping other people without bad motives. I mean like example in my case, my classmate keep on insisting and project that he helped me so much especially for giving me an opportunities. Wherein fact he said that by the time that he can't be able to pay for our salary that I have done for him. It is like he is saying excuses in order for him to escape from the responsibility. I've already caught him in the act that every time he helps then it has a catch. So now I don't trust him anymore about his motives if he is really helping other people because in the end all he wants is the recognition and the change. But there are people who are really malicious on their way of thinking. Some of them are pathetic enough not to feel and think that there are people who are totally sincere in helping other people. Or maybe they are not like that because they are totally selfish.

Hi Metatronik, sorry to hear that you have met some selfish people in your life. I think those who do a bit of good, and then keep talking about it, are just as bad as those who never think about helping others. Those who really have good intention to help others never try to boast about what they have done. I do not trust those who keep talking about how much they have done, how much they have helped others too. I think they spend more time talking than doing.

hi, That is because of the sick minded people who can’t see anyone doing good to the society/ for the needy. It is hard for certain people to accept that others are kind hearted. Also when you try to do something good for the society, you are surrounded by obstacles and it is tough to achieve self satisfaction… which in other words road to good is a long path and bad is a short cut. have a nice time

Hi Viju, yes, that is true. They are not good people, and they think that nobody is good either. Since they do not help others for the sake of really helping others, they think that others have bad motives for doing good deeds too. I think they must be very miserable too, since they see the whole world as bad, and everyone with bad motive.

Maybe people tend to judge others based on themselves. We are living in materialistic, consumer world, where any act of generosity is accepted as strange, because most of the people don't care about no one, but themselves.

Hi Mgzg, that is true. I have not really thought about it this way. It is true that many people judge others based on themselves. If they are good, they will assume that others have the good intentions too. Those who think that others have bad motives must be very selfish people. They probably never thought that good people exist. They thought that everyone is as selfish as them.

People do not do things without a reason because we are rational being. It maybe out of good or bad intention. As for your reasoning, I do not think that way so maybe he/she simply is pessimistic. He/she believes nothing good about the world. We cant dismiss the fact that their are bad people with an evil motive behind a good deed they are making . Pretentious that what they are. We just have to be alert and be careful in to whom we give our trust.

Hi Dazzled, there are some people who do not see things as it is. They always try to judge others, and they think that all rich people are bad or selfish. Even if someone makes a large donation anonymously, they still want to assume that the donor has bad motive. That is very bad of them, especially when most people do not have the ability to donate so much money.

Hi Rohimmudin, it is impossible to think that God can create men that are not good at all. I think God creates men who are good, but men decide to be selfish. It is the same in many families too. Good parents who teach all their children to be good, yet there are some children who later turn out bad. Some of them did not even want to take care of their parents. They just want to enjoy themselves, and hope that their parents die earlier, so that they can inherit something.

Hi Rohimmudin, yes, I agree with your assessment of them. They are just plain selfish people who never want to do good to help others, and when others are doing good, they will talk bad about them. Just too bad that there are so many selfish people around. The world will be a better place if everyone learns to think of others, and not so judgemental.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of pessimistic people out there that feel like no one in the world has good intentions, that everyone has an alterior motive despite the outward appearance of good. While I believe that there are very few Purely Good people in the world, I do tend to have faith in the goodness of humanity. Being human means we make mistakes yes, but it also means we have the potential for compassion, kindness, and love. These parts of humanity make us more apt to do good, for the sake of doing good.

Hi Tinkerick, yes, I share the same thought. As long as they are going good, and have benefited many people, it does not matter what motives they have. Anyway we are not the judge of humanity, and it is not right for us to assume that others do good just for the sake of some ulterior motives. I think even when the rich donate millions, and they get certain amount of tax write off, the amount they save on taxes is very little compared to the amount donated. They must have the compassion and the intention to do good, otherwise they will rather keep the money.

Sometimes you can't win. If you don't do something they will assume you don't care and that you are selfish and if you do something, you are showing off. This is the fickle world we live in. We just can't please it. Even Jesus had that problem. Notice: Matthew 11:18-19 New Living Translation (NLT) 18 For John didn’t spend his time eating and drinking, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man,[a] on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.” So, it best to do the right thing and forget about the opinions of people that only want to criticize for they will criticize no matter what!

Hi 1hopefulman, yes, that is true. Even a perfect man cannot please everyone, despite all the miracles he performed to help others, we will have a worse time than him. I think it is bad for people to assume that those who do good have certain motives, since by sowing bad thoughts, they will reap bad results. If we assume that everyone has a compassion for the less fortunate ones, we will definitely feel happier, and more willing to help others.

Such phenomenon is so common in my country. I guess the essential reason is the shortage of faith. Many people have no faith and believe that people live for themselves only. Following this "belief", when they see someone did something good, they take it for granted that that person did that in order to acquire something, such as reputation. Through putting others down, they make themselves not shame for their dark mentalities. And it's not easy to change such social atmosphere in a short time.
@scheng1 (24649)

Hi Simon, I think it is not just in your country. Most people do not care about the others, they care only for themselves. They do not bother about the fact that others have more problems than them, since they always complain that they have not enough this or that, or they complain that their bosses do not treat them well. They forget that the whole purpose in life is to help others. We cannot be happy if we are so selfish and think God and others are our servants, or that we deserve everything we want without working for it.

People who think about that are those who have already experienced being helped by people who have bad motives. If they haven't experienced yet, they have watched stories like this in movies where politicians or actors are helping the needy because they have hidden motives.

Hi Wittynet, I think if we assume that the actors or politicians are doing good things for hidden motives, that is not right too. Even if they have hidden motives, they are still doing good. It does not mean all of them have hidden agendas, since many of them are already very successful in their lives. At some time or other, they may have inspired others or save a family from going hungry.
