Does Anyone Know Why Grapes And Flowers Aren't Allowed On Hospital Wards?

I noticed this when I had a very short spell in hospital a couple of years ago. Not one flower or grape anywhere. No wonder I was depressed lol. It's the same whenever there is a hospital scene on television. No grapes or flowers allowed so it must be a "national" thing. Does anyone know why and is it the same where you are?

It's allowed here. When I had my daughter, my room was flooded with flowers and treats. It was very nice, I hadn't actually heard of any hospital that disallowed them. I would assume it was because of allergies.

Maybe it was because you were in a room rather than on a ward?

I doubt it. The wards have flowers here too.

Here we have flowers, grapes, any other type of fruit, candy, often some personal items like family pics, etc. in the hospital rooms. One lady I roomed with had her side of the room made up to look like her bedroom at home. She had enough pictures on the walls to almost wallpaper it! We sneaked sweet potato pie at night. She was in for a very long time trying to get rid of massive migraines.

That time, but I've been in county hospitals and found the same thing. So it doesn't seem to matter here.

Yeah..because I took them in right in front of the nurses, and nurses did visit her room several times, but they said nothing about it...may be that is the reason she took longer to recover..

Well, I never heard about grapes. But I remember seeing flowers in the hospitals. Especially in the rooms with patients. I never heard of that. Unless they remove any flowers or plants from the rooms. I figure maybe it is because of allergies. Lots of people are allergic to flowers.

Couldn't they have fake ones though? They've come on leaps and bounds over the years although I must admit, I DO prefer the real thing.

I am sure they would allow fake ones. I guess they figure with the real ones, there is the allergy factor and with the fake ones, there might be the dust collecting factor. either way, it is probably better that none of that stuff is in a hospital room. And I would also guess it would depend on the condition the patient has as well.

I'm not sure about flowers, but I think that even it is allowed, people don't really bring them to hospital because someone can be allergic. It's sad because flowers can cheer many people up, but looks like it's not considered safe... About the grapes, I'm sure they are allowed. I don't know what is against grapes - it shouldn't cause allergy without eating it I guess.

Perhaps the grapes are left uneaten and go off in the heat of the wards, who knows?

But any fruit can go bad, grapes are at least easy to eat without help I have no idea...

I have never noticed anything like this in hospitals here. People can bring grapes and flowers to the hospital ward here if they want. I guess it might be due to allergies that can't bring flowers to hospitals where you live. Don't know about grapes though...

I guess it must be the allergy thing..can't think it can be anything else, to be honest. Still a silly rule though.

Allergies? Introducing insects to the wards? Seems a bit drastic to ban them on all wards though.

Yes, I thought about the allergies thing but it seems a shame that those without allergies have to go er..without their flowers lol. I've not even seen any fake ones!

That's weird. It's my first time to know that! But maybe, its because it can complicate patients' diseases?

I have no idea regarding this matter. So if that is the case then that hospital doesn't have any stalls or stands that are selling flowers. Because here in the Philippines I can see the other hospitals that are selling flowers so I expect that it is not prohibited to bring flowers nor the grapes.

I'm not sure if the little shops in hospitals sell flowers but they sell allsorts of "junk" food which is unbelievable considering you're supposed to be in a health environment!

Over here it's allowed. The only thing that has changed is that the nurse seldom puts the flowers in a vase anymore. As a visitor you have to do it yourself.

Hospitals has banned gifts of flowers and grapes because of fears that they pose a health risk such as allergies.

Grapes and flowers are not allowed on hospital wards because they are high in natural sugar and are easily digestible energy.

I assumed it was because the grapes pose a choking problem and flowers use up oxygen. In the old days flowers were removed from the rooms at night and returned in the morning. Nurses are too busy to do that now. It's strange, you don't see much of nurses any more and there are lots of jobs they no longer do so what are they busy doing since they are overworked and underpaid???

Well, in this country you're not allowed to fall ill at weekends because of a lack of staff. When I was in hospital a couple of years ago I noticed this at first hand as it was a Bank Holiday weekend as well...not good.

Really? Thats weird! Im in the USA and last time i was in hospital was when my grandaughter was born, 6yrs ago. There were flowers then. Did you ask staff to see if there was a rule about that? The only thing i can think of is because of alergies. Then there are some people that have problems because of scents like perfume.

Oh so you know the reason already. As far as i know is still ok here in the USA to have flowers in the rooms. So do they have grapes in water too?

It's a Health and Safety issue. The water in vases that the flowers are in can spill and if it doesn't get mopped up immediately, can harbour organisms harmful to patients. It's pure laziness on the nurses' part, in my opinion.

Me during my duty - This is during my residency training.
I am not sure why grapes are not allowed in your place but I saw lots of grapes in the wards in our place. Those are rich in ascorbic acid and helps in healing. Flowers are not allowed in the intensive care unit only because it might bring bacteria to the room.

It's funny how we're encouraged to walk amongst flowers in the springtime isn't it? All that energy to lift the spirits.

i don't think that it is not really allowed. if you are in a ward then it is understandable that you also have to be considerate because some patients their might be allergic to flowers. but i just don't know about the grapes, i don't see anything wrong about it if it is not allowed, i presume so are the other fruits. but of course if a patient has his own private room, i think it is allowed.

Someone has stated that the grapes may be a source of contamination which wouldn't be good for a sterile hospital environment. You learn something new every day on here!

yeah, anything can be contaminated if we are not practicing the proper aseptic technique. yeah that's right that's why i like it hear, you cannot only learn but you can also help others by trying to give them advice

Over here I have never heard of it.We can carry varieties of fruit and flowers ,when we visit a patient.I trawl what you said online out of curiosity. They don't mention grapes specially. They say that hospital bans flowers because they pose a health risk to patients ,even some hospital refuses any plants and bouquets delivered to hospital wards,The hospital claims harmful bacteria can grow in the water and spread germs among patients if spilt. So does the Cambridge University Hospital,"cut flowers and plants in water are not allowed on the wards...this is to prevent infection."then they adds that" plants and dried flower arrangements are allowed."

What a ridiculous rule. More likely the nurses don't want to sort the flowers out or any spillages that may occur!

Fresh fruits and flowers aren't allowed on wards because they contain microorganisms. These can cause infection to patients especially if they have very low immune system. Fruits and flowers may be allowed generally if the patient is already recovering and has better immune response. I know this because I studied Nursing.
