I Killed a Dog Today

It was one of our young dogs, who was sick. I home butcher other animals for meat, so I know how to do it quickly. For him, it was as quick as it could be and I don't think he realised it was coming. Better than suffering, certainly. I've never become blase about killing things, but I really didn't think it would affect me so badly. I guess because it was a pointless death. He's waiting for me to bury him now. I've got a small peach tree still in a pot so I shall plant that over him, up by our beehives in the sun. Have you ever had to do the same?

I just had the vet put one of my cats to sleep a few weeks ago. I brought him thinking he had diarrhea, would get a pill and go on with his life. But it was intestinal cancer. It was sad. When you love another creature, it's always sad. But better than suffering.

That must have been a horrible shock. I'm sorry. I would hate to be a vet and have to tell people news like that all the time.

Haven't tried even at once. I am afraid. :-) Once when my puppy was sick, i just placed her in her bed and hoped that she will be okay. Before that, I have given her medicine but she vomits it..Then she sleeps. When I checked it back, it seems like leaves are falling, the wind was blowing...and there, no more breathing occurs. My puppy rests in peace. :-( we then bury her, kids in the neighborhood cried when they knew about it. They rush and run to get some flowers and throw it in the grave. It rained and then we said goodbye to puppy.

It sounds like she passed easily, and with plenty of love, and I am happy to hear that. I'm sorry for your loss though. It's always hard to lose a pet.

I have had to do so, yes. Before there were 24 hour emergency clinics for animals a dog of ours got hit by a car and he was hurt so badly that we were sure he could not recover. It was so traumatic for me that I don't remember if it was me or my husband that pulled the trigger--we made a deal, one would put the poor dog out of his misery and the other would bury him. I cried for days. But the dog would not have lived another day and shortening his suffering was a mercy to him. I have also, years after that, had to have dogs "put to sleep" and that is just as heart-wrenching and painful as doing the deed oneself. But in the end it is merciful and the last act of love you can show the animal. I'm glad your dog will have a beautiful and fruitful tree marking his body's resting place. He will nourish the tree which will in turn feed your family. I hope you feel better soon, this is just the way of things and you did him a kindness.

Sometimes it's the kindest way. But it doesn't make it any less painful.

Never heard of taking it to a vets, I presume?

I'm more than familiar with vets thanks Janey. Our closest is over an hour's drive away and my partner (and truck) aren't expected home till tomorrow night. Should I have let him suffer until then, knowing that I'm quite able to do the job myself?

Or could the vet come to the property?

Wow! i admire you for being able to put it out of it's misery. i have to be honest and admit i do not have the bravery to kill an animal. i found a bird that was still alive after a cat had pulled its entrails out and i had to get my neighbour to snap its neck. i fully appreciate how you must feel but people have to realise that the costs involved with a vet are astronomical. (here in the UK anyway) especially if you do not have insurence. i hope you have many good memories to think back on.

Vet costs are indeed expensive. I suppose I'm fortunate that it's something I'm prepared to do myself if need be, not that I want to. Although the last dog we had to have put down went to the vet as it was not an emergency and he was a bigger animal than I was prepared to deal with.

Hey GreenMoo, Sorry for your loss... it's never easy losing someone you love, especially if you have to do it this way. Nope, I've never had to. I guess that's one of the disadvantages of having a pet. You love them so much, and when something happens to them, you get so miserable and hurt. But still, one does cherish their memories forever. At least, it was over quickly, and without pain. That's some consolation, knowing that he did not suffer.

I hope the tree I planted does well. When I see it blossom in the future it will remind me.

We had to go have our Cat, or was my husbands Cat when I married him put to sleep as it was really sick and had some major issues. We also had to put animals to sleep back when I was growing up. Many times when they are really sick, it is better to put them to sleep than trying to save them for sure. Better to try and end their suffering as well.

I'd rather see an end to any type of suffering.

If I ever thought I'd have to take responsibility for ending an animal's life due to illness or injury, I'd take the animal to a professional vet. I would not do it myself, because I have no experience doing this. Also, I would not want to be the one to have to kill the animal. Let the vet do it!

I've got enough experience that I was able to carry it out quickly and with minimum distress, but I too would prefer to use a vet simply because it's not a nice thing to have to do. This is the first time one of the animals has become that sick when I've not had access to the truck.

I truly respect you, as I am SURE this was one of your most painful endeavours...but your mustered up all that you had, for all the right reasons! My father had the ability, too, to detach himself enough to do the right thing! I, myself cannot...I have the ability to make the decision, but cannot carry thru, so I am blessed enough that my tenant is able to complete the process! I know in my heart it is right...but I just become paralized! I live very rurally, too...and the only Vet to reach is as complicated as you have related...and in many cases, that is NOT an option, due to the injuries and pain. The responses using the term "butchering" has actually upset me a lot! It conjures up horrible thoughts.....versus the fact you performed a compassionate mercy demise! I truly do applaud you, and your unselfish decision!

Thanks Pergammano for your kind words. I too was a little upset by the term butchering. Butchering is a completely different thing, done for a different reason.

I don't think I could. I've never killed anything, except the once or twice I've run over an animal with my car and I still feel awful about that.

I could only do it because I deal with the other animals which we kill for meat. So it was just the emotional hurdle to overcome. My other dogs seem hardly to have noticed, which is really peculiar.

If it were suffering I agree it should be put down, but I wouldn't even know how, let alone be capable of doing it.

Never done anything like that ever and I'm thankful I don't have to make such decision as I am quite a softie. I think it was a brave thing for you to do. It's hard to be rational in such cases. You did the right thing.

I never done so but it's perfectly natural for what you did, we are on the top of the food chain so we are allowed to dictate other animals all we want. Still as you said it was pointless as we are abundant of food and we have other natural food sources already like cows.

I don't agree with you. Are we really meat eaters ? How come we don't have sharp teeth to tear apart meat ? how come we need to cook it on fire or boil it before we eat it ? I have never seen other animals eat meat that way...they only eat a fresh meat. Do you see a living animal and think about eating it ? may it be a cow , chicken...any predetor instincts are awaken ? Not for me.
