India's defence budget for 2012-2013 (1st April 2012-31st March 2013) is 1.93 lakh crore Rupees. How much is your country's defence budget for the current year? NB: 1.93 lakh crore is 193,00000,00,00000 Rupees.

In the US it's roughly $683 billion. Our budget is higher than other countries for various reasons, but the most significant is that our military is actually responsible for defending several other countries besides our own.

Well, I wonder if US would get involved in countries where there is future prospect of return at all or if there is no domestic or international political compulsion. For example, Burma is a rogue regime for these years. Sri Lanka's way of ending the Tamil Tigers was against international standard of war. But US chose to remain silent, and rather concentrated its effort on Iran/Afghanistan. Similarly, even my own country chose to remain silent on this front though we take pride in the fact that we are the biggest democracy in the world...probably because the govt thought that Chinese Govt will take advantage of the situation once India attempts to raise its voice against these countries. I guess similar things apply to US too.

Commentators say it's below 2% of the country's GDP. Even previous year the defence budget was less than 2 % of the GDP.

india is such a big country, and it faces a threat from india and within its territory. it is somehow justifiable if the defense budget is such a huge amount of money. my country of origin is increasing its budget too for defense because of the dispute in spratlys with china. but there are many shortages in social services that need to be addressed first before the defense concerns.

I really do not know the exact defense budget. Sources say that the allocation is very small. Legislators focus on public works projects like building schools, road and highways. The national defense budget is not a priority among legislators. We relly mainly with the United States for national protection. Please read this article http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/regions/view/20090829-222522/DND-chief-laments-small-military-budget for you to have an idea how lamentable the situation is.
