Last year my ex father in law purchased another house. We worked for several months to repair it so it could be rented. We had several people interested in renting but my ex mother in law kept finding some excuse not to rent to them. She had made up her mind that every potential renter would not pay their rent or would tear the house up. In January a couple who had been interested in the house last year and repeatedly kept calling and begging to rent this house called again wanting to rent it. We told these people that we did not even knopw if the water pipes needed repair as the house was bought as is and the water had never been turned on. The people still insisted and said that if there were any problems they would take care of it. Well she rented it to them. This was on the 19th of January. They moved in a few days later only to find out that the main water line was busted outside. We worked from daylight till dark in order to fix it. The man started complaining about dirt being tracked on the floor which could not be helped as my husband had to go under the house in order to find and fix the lines. He kept calling and complaining not about the water but about people walking on the floor. Just a plain old worn floor. The man told my husband that he was not allowed in the house because he kept tracking on the floor. In the meantime we dug up the waterline outside and found the problem and fixed it. This took 5 days and would have only taken four had the man not complained about dirt. To make a long story shot the man never paid his rent on the 19th of the next month stating that he did not move in until the first. He then cut the electrical ground rod to the house without permission and then refused to pay for the extra 11 days that he owed. He never paid the rent at all and was given a 30 day notice to move. He then had the never to call up and say that he would be out by friday if we would give him his 250 dollar deposit back. He was told no. He also ran up a 198 dollar water bill of which he did not pay and my ex father in law also gave him 200 dollars in which to pay the water bill and for his inconvenience. Now the man is threatening to sue them. Whjat would you do if you had a renter likie this one?

I guess they wanted us to pay him to stay there. It was so ridiculous. He went so far as to say that his little girl fell down the stairs and he was suing because there was no guard rail on the stairway when he asked if he could put one up and was told he could. He said that he had a lawyer and we couldn't make him move.

hi katie one word comes to my mind as I finished reading the discussion. the answer to what would I do if I had a renter like
this one he would be evicted so fast his head would swirl.Your ex father in law bent over backwards for the grumbling man, and the man does not even appreciate it at all. so eviction would be in order.I know when we got behind in t he rent as we had used up all our savings we were handed an eviction notice immediately. It sure sounds like your ex father in law really went all out to repair the house and make it liveable . So I hope he gets a decent family to rent to and recover some of the money he lost on the grumbling man. oi iiiiiiiiii r

Hello Hatley, Well hopefully the next renters won't be like these. We all tried to be fair and I even gave these people thirty days to move instead of the 10 that is required by Indiana law. I do know that next time there will be background checks done in advance. The mistake we made is not doing exactly that with these people and when I did do a background check it was found that they had lived in quite a few different states and had moved numerous times. I have no doubt that this is the very reason why. They move in and then get away with being able to stay at least several months without paying anything, they leave without paying their utilities and in this town if the water isn't paid then it is the responsibility of the owner to pay it. There are good renters out there. I myself had always been a good renter and am glad that I finally own my own place, but I would never and have never done anything so underhanded to my landlords.

After all the trouble you have gone through, you do not deserve to be treated that way by these renters. In the first place, they were the ones who insisted that they rent the place. I guess your ex mother-in-law has good instincts. As you said they are now threatening to sue. Just ignore them for it will do no good arguing with people like them.
