Body massage for the first time!

For the first time in my life, in 29 years of my existence, I am going to a spa to have a body massage. It's going to be my aunt's treat. I feel a little reluctant because I have never been to that spa session other than manicure, pedicure and basic facial and I am not used to a stranger (a massage therapist) touching/massaging my body parts.
To those who regularly go to spa/salon to have a body massage, how was your first time there? What do I need to bring just in case? Is it ideal to have a body massage when a body part is in pain (without consulting a doctor)?

Dear friend,
I hope you would enjoyed that massage. Here we do have Ayurvedic centers were they give massages cheaper than in Spas. Most spas are costly. At time I do get relaxation massages from those Ayuvedic centeres here. It really give me a refreshment.

Just go to the spa and they will take care of you. You do not need to bring anything for everything will be provided there. These therapists are professionals and well trained. They do not think maliciously. If you have a body part that is consistently hurting, I think you should consult a doctor first before having a spa.

I don't get them regularly like I would like to but they are wonderful. I was told that if one didn't drink a lot of water after having a professional massage that it they might have flu like symptoms. Apparently there are toxins that the massage therapist releases into your system to be flushed away when they give you a massage. This can be very cleansing and make you feel a lot better but if there is not a lot of water intake, it can take longer for the toxins to get out and make you feel bad for a while.]
Take care and enjoy that massage!

I haven't go to any spa at all to have massage cause my sister know to do Swedish massage and undergo a massage therapist training. So if she have spare time, I ask her to massage me just at home.Really relaxing and refreshing.

I am a retired massage therapist so I've given and received many massages.
There are different types of massage. Personally, I like a therapeutic massage where I can relax and experience an altered state of consciousness. It's as good as a vacation.
Some people like deep tissue massage. Sometimes a deep tissue massage can be anything BUT relaxing because it might be painful, instead.
When you arrive for your appointment your massage therapist should communicate with you to ask you about current pain or injuries. You can also feel free to communicate with your therapists.
Remember...it's your massage so if there's anything about it you don't like feel free to express yourself.

This is something I have never done also, but it is on my to do list, I guess I am a little reluctant about having a stranger doing it, but I have been told it is very relaxing indeed....

Congratulations :), I am sure that you'll enjoy it. Well, I remember that when I had my first body massage, I was a bit reluctant as well because I was worried that it might hurt, anyway that was just in the beginning because as the massage session goes one, I learned how to relax and enjoy the wonderful body massage. Yeah, don't worry as long as those massage therapists are really well-trained, it's ok for them to massage those parts that hurt. However, they would usually ask you first if you have hypertension or high blood pressure if you will have your neck and head massage.
Happy lotting and enjoy the massage :).
