What is the age of your friend? Diseases of prostate are more common in old people. Due to benign hyperplasia of prostate one has to pass urine more frequently.
When he feels that his bladder is full, is actually his bladder full? I mean, after going to toilet, does he micturate huge amount of urine? In diabetes the patient actually passes more urine, while in prostatic diseases, small amount of urine but frequently.
Has he checked his blood sugar? If no, doing a simple 'Random Blood Sugar' test will present the scenerio.
Does he feel burning sensation while passing urine? If yes, then it is likely to be urinary tract infection. A 'Culture & Sensitivity' test of urine will confirm it.

Your friend should see a doctor. This condition you have described is called polyuria. Polyuria means the excessive passage of urine resulting in profuse urination and urinary frequency. It is a symptom of several kinds of conditions. For more information and to convince your friend to see a doctor, please read this article at http://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders/overactive_bladder/hic_noctural_polyuria.aspx

Hello BYOLA2871, it could be some serious problem if it has suddenly started happening to him, most likely a UTI or increased sugar levels indicating diabetes, not life threatening disease but should not be ignored for a minute longer. Get him to see a doctor immediately!

I think he should get checked out for a possible illness, it could be anything from a prostate problem, diabetes or even a urinary infection. Does he drink alot before going to bed? That is way too many times that he needs to go. I hope he will go before things get too complicated and worse that there is no hope or makes something else go wrong too.

If it happened just recently then it could be a symptom of an urinary tract infection. But for your friend's peace of mind he should subject himself to a check up. It is better to know than not knowing at all. Or it maybe too late to intervene , we should not be to lenient about our health because it may affect us and damage some of our vital organs.
