It's your first name I'm asking about. My name is Patricia, this is the first time that name has been used in my family, I don't know where it came from. But I do know there were always a couple of girls with that name when I was in school. Is your name a family name? Even my Hubby doesn't have a family name and he came from a southern family who are noted for giving out family names. We both waited to long since all our parents are dead we can't ask them. So if you are interested in your first name make sure you ask your parents before they are gone.

Yeah, I already knew my name's meaning since my childhood. In my country, name is a pray. So, every parents will try their best to give meaningful name to their children. And my parents told me the meaning of my name since the earlier stage of my life, so I can be proud with my own name, and (hopefully) being able to act like what my name's meaning.

well, my name id a contraction of many things. The first two letters were the initials of my father, followed by an E which supposedly stands for eldest and the first two letters of daughter (which is da). It was given to me since I was the first girl in the family. If a second girl arrived, her name will be akin to mine in terms of spelling. The e will be replaced by Y, which will stands for 'younger'. however, this is impossible since my parents didn't give me any additional brothers or sisters.

I was named "Jeanne" after a friend of my mother's. It is spelled as the French spell it, and all of my life I've been so frustrated with those who insist on calling me "jeannie", a form I personally don't care for. My middle name, Carol, is also French. But my mother's family was pure Lithuanian! My daughter was named Stephanie simply because I liked it, with her middle name, Jill, after my sister. My son got Paul John Christopher because "Paul John" was too short for my liking. Both my kids got "family" names for their middle names - Jill, after my sister, John, after my husband. I vowed that none of my kids would have a first name beginning with a "J" since everyone in my family had a "J" name and it got confusing. Which was a shame because I loved the name "Jennifer" but decided against it for that reason.

In our schools up here, we have to do a report on our first name in the 2nd grade. My first name is Hebrew(even tho my parents were and raised us Catholic) and it means lily. My parents wanted regular names. Everyone was naming their children Debbie, Kathy, and Susan. We had tons of people who had already named their children in our relative families Kathy. Deborah was the regular name for Debbie which they didn't like. So I ended up with the last one. My parents had unusual names that they hated. So we had to have usualy names like John, Mike, Joe. There were so many Susans in every class I was in, I started being called by my last name until my cousin with the same last name was in my class. Then we went by my middle name was in my class so we went by my middle name until a bunch of girls had that name. So then I ended up being called by almost all three of my names like a Bobbie-Jo kind of thing. My husband's first name is a family name. The first born males are named after Presidents. They want the first ones to aspire to doing something great. They take care of the rest of the family. His middle name is the last name of the Native Americans he's related to although the last name is English because it's the English name the Natives took during whatever war it was that they took American names. Unfortunately there are about 3 first born males who have the same last name and same first name. With all the presidents, you'd think they could pick different first names. His school, which is 1 1/2 hours away, that was also a report they did. So he wrote about what his parents admired about that president. His report was easy. Try filling up a page with lily, Hebrew, parents wanted a normal name, most popular name in 1950s. I had to write stuff about the lily flower, the differnt forms of my first name, added my parents unusual name and that they were picked on for their names to get my full page. Also trying to make my report different from all the other people with the same first name in my class was a challenge. My husband didn't have that problem. Most people's parents aren't that much into history.

I used to ask my father why I had this first name and he told me the answer. According to the tradition of my country, a big family usually had a genealogy, which indicated that each generation should have its own common word so that everyone belong to the same generation has a common word in his first name. Personally speaking, I was entitled according to the genealogy of my family. But owing to the dramatic change in the cultural field, this tradition is no longer followed by many young couples. They usually look up the dictionary to find a proper first name for their baby.

When I was a baby I was sickly. So my mother added a second name and named me after a saint. I don't claim to be saintly but I guess I am not sickly. I dunno if naming me after that saint did it.

I have 3 names. The first two were my grannies (my parents named us kids after the grandparents and later themselves) my 3rd name is the name they did like most (the others were given so their won't be a fight in the family). I never liked my names they are ugly. Also I don't like the reason why I am named like that, it's the choice of cowards. I did not name any of my kids after someone. I don't see the use of it, since every person is an individual. They took their own names with them as they were born and they fit if comes to the meaning of it and how they are/behave/their character.

My parents looked from a book of names when they looked for their children's names. :D My first name means "peace" and I like it. :D It's a Catholic name, and it's actually rarely used in my country as it's not the characteristic names of my country. Only those who are Catholic or Christian know this name. But now I often see there are many girls who use this name. :O Not cool anymore, they make my name not unique anymore. Hahahah! I don't know if I have brought peace the my environment, but at least I don't like fighting or having arguments in public. Lol.

I'm not exactly sure where I got my first name (or middle name for that matter). All I know is that my mom had planned on naming me something else altogether, but when I wound up being born two weeks late and into the following month all the plans for that name flew out the window. So my parents came up with a different name instead. I doubt I was named after anyone in my family. At least not by what I could see from my family tree anyway! LOL Happy mylotting!

Really? Your husband doesn't have a family name? Wow, its my first time to hear cases like that. Anyway, my first name is Cheyenne. I know its a common and familiar in US because it is a US state capital name of Wyoming. Well, its uncommon here in our place, so they thought of it as unique, but I hated my name since people are having hard time to pronounce it as "Shy-yan" and mispronounced it to "Cheh-yen". Urrgh! It's just so irritating. Well, luckily, I have a family name. It sounds foreign also like my first, but both names I have doesn't seem to have luck to me.

Well, my name is not even remotely close to being a family name. My family is italian and my name came right out of left field. I asked my mother how she came up with my name. Now my name is Steven. Her answer was simple. You see, my mother was a big fan of Steve Allen back in the day. So she named me Steven after him. I even asked why would she do that? She just said that she liked him and liked his name. My brother was name after my grandfather. My fathers father.

The story of how I was named is interesting. I asked my mom one time , who is in the family that I was named after and she said nobody. She said that my brother was named after Grandpa. My dad named me, he picked a name from his past. He told my mom that he liked the name and that he once had a girlfriend with that name. So, I was named after my dad's old girlfriend, ha! Ha!. My name is spelled a certain way also, I am very particular of the spelling because it's what sets me apart from the usual way people spell the name. My name is ELEONORE.

yes it is very reasonable that one should know the meaning of there names, it is quite embarrassing that when asked the meaning of a fancy name your parents gave you and you cant explain it , i know were i got my name ,like most African names it is always as a result of what your parents encountered during the period of your birth
