It is curious that I was just thinking about this, and I just opened a thread about this. Aspartame is bad, there have been studies about this, the mice they used to experiment with had grown tumors in their bodies. I don't know how they use it, there is another healthier alternatives, like the stevia plant (that is 100% natural and has 0 calories) or the xylitol (that has 40% less calories than sugar). Both are safe for diabetics.
Keep in mind that Xylitol, although is completely safe for humans, is very toxic for some animals like dogs! If you plan to use xylitol for your cooking, dont let your dog taste it!

There are a lot of studies about the toxicity of aspartame, and this sweetener is very harmful, like Timeout said.
A study has been done also here in Italy by Foundation Ramazzini and it concluded aspartame is carcinogenic even with the half of the allowed daily amount.
The other sweeteners are toxic too, and some research fellows say sweeteners don't help in diets.
So, my suggestion is stay away from sweeteners, eat less and do more cardiovascular workout.

I read some info from a doctor that says there are 92 side effects of aspartame.
Those who use aspartame can test by removing everything that has it from their diet and see what happens.

Well, the gulf war syndrome being caused by apartame sounds ridiculous to me. But asperate is not good for us at all. It's amazing at how many health problems it can cause us. I mean they label it as safe, but there are so many studies saying the long term effects of it are quite harmful. It's a reason why I don't drink Diet cola.

Any chemical, be it Aspartame or Aspirin is unsafe if taken regularly and in large quantities. FDA going back on its earlier stand is not surprising. Similar thing did happen when saccharin was introduced. It was touted as the best thing to have happened for a diabetic who wanted to have his coffee sweetened and then one day it was labeled as unsafe.
What we should learn is to avoid chemicals if we can help it. After all, our life is more important than its small pleasures.
