How do you convince a busy/lazy person to exercise?

Both of my parents have a family history of stroke. They're getting older and I am really worried about their health. I took out our old treadmill and placed it on a more accessible spot. I tried to tell my parents to start hitting the treadmill to have a healthier body. My dad would tell me that he's too busy. My mom, on the other hand, would tell me that she's too lazy. I don't know what to do. I walk on our inclined treadmill thrice a week for 15 minutes. I wish they would get jealous after I've achieved my ideal shape LOL. I also climb the stairs as often as possible.

One of the tip from some fitness experts is to have workouts/exercise with a companion. This wll increase motivation for both of you. I guess you need to have it with them. Not only for health reasons but for family bonding. I hope this will work. You are right, they might be inspired if they can see changes in your body.

Good suggestion, asdomencil. It's true that we feel more motivated when we have companions. I will think of other activities that we can do together. I'm trying not to break my promise to exercise at least thrice a day. I want to show them that it's doable. If I can do it, so can they.

We're back again to people having to want to be healthy themselves. Many people just don't see the big deal in exercise and eating right. Naturally you are concerned, but they have to be concerned themselves before they will change the lifestyle they are comfortable with. Have you gone to your mother and expressed your concern about your dad? Maybe if she were afraid of losing him, she'd offer to exercise if he would. Maybe they'd prefer a nice walk together to a treadmill. I thought the treadmill was really boring and I much prefer to go for a real walk. Sometimes the concern of a wife will motivate a man more than nagging from his children. But I don't know that.

When you get older, sometimes you'd rather enjoy what's left of life rather than living a longer life having to give up a lot of what you love and adding things you hate. Sometimes people mistakenly see things as either or. Either I live the way I am now or I die. They forget about the in-between stuff, such as being permanently disabled by a heart attack or stroke and living a miserable life because of it.

Sometimes, my parents think they're invincible, especially my dad. They're getting old, but they don't think much about their health. My dad believes that enjoying life (such as eating whatever he wants) is much more important than worrying about health. Some people we know get sick despite their healthy lifestyle, and others live a long life despite their drinking/smoking habits. However, I still believe that it's the best thing to try being healthy than doing nothing at all. My mom is concerned about my dad's health. But she focuses more on buying vegetables that he ends up not eating instead of convincing him to exercise. She doesn't want to exercise, too. I agree that treadmill is boring. But for now, we don't have much choice. It just happens that we have a treadmill at home. Every time I'm using the treadmill, I would place it in front of TV so I can watch while walking. It makes it much more bearable.:)

We're in the same situation. My mom has just retired from her job. And everyday she's just sitting on the couch watching TV. She said she wants to start exercising but whenever she sets a date, she cannot start exercising on that date. She's just always talking, and not actually doing it. My old family has a history of diabetes and high blood pressure and I'm also concern about them. I exercise twice a week and I want to exercise more frequently.

good day cheerfulnuts, indeed, it is quite hard to convince a person with that attitude. however, you might still convince them by trying to switch on a good music while using the treadmill. and maybe you can do a quick start of your own, and when they see you doing some exercises on that, they might be push to join you as well. it is just, they might need somebody to start then they will just follow after sometime.

well as you already know that health is wealth but i not only believe in that quote but i apply it in my life.. and as per your question on "how do you convince lazy person to exercise.for me i think it is not easy but i can convince them and tell that they should regularly do somekind of exercises to keep their body fit and fine.and this in turn will benefit them in the longer stage of their life hence it is always good to do some exercises for mind and body.

Maybe it's very easy to explain why exercise is so important. But it's easier said than done. My parents know that exercise is important. They're just not motivated enough to do it. And they don't see the need yet.

If weather permits, maybe you could suggest a family walk or something? Just clear some time two or three days a week with them, and if they're not too keen on that, add in that it's some good family bonding time, too. Then again, if they've no motivation to do it, then they'll probably just not take to the idea.

That's a good suggestion. It would really be terrific if we have a garden or a park nearby. We live in a small apartment and it's quite difficult to move around. I think the nearest park is about 30 minutes away from home. We go to the mall every weekend and my parents think that it's an "exercise". I don't think that it's an exercise though.

It is very tough to convince lazy personality to do exercise because a lazy person tend to ignore the advise Of anyone , in spite of all efforts I also come across a similar situation in which I needed to convince lazy person to do exercise but believe me in spite of all my efforts I was not able to convince that person not because I had any problem in convincing but because it was the laziness off that person which became hindrance to accept my advice …. So I advise you to take the help of psychiatrist who only can convince a lazy person Hare Krishna Ganesh

It's nice that you are looking out for your parents' best interests. I am also sometimes worried about how sedentary my parents seem to be (besides at work). It can't be good for you. I guess maybe you could try to get them to go on walks with you. I find walks to be really relaxing, and for people who don't exercise all that much, it's great for them. It's just hard to try to get people to change when they really don't have any interest in changing. I would be especially concerned though if you have a family history of strokes or heart problems. You would think that would make them more inspired to stay in shape. I also think the "I don't have the time! I am too busy!" excuse is a cop-out. Even exercising for 10 minutes a day is better than nothing. I feel like something like exercising should be a priority - you need to MAKE time for it, even if it's, like I said 10 minutes a day. Or walking around the city blocks acouple of times. Anything is better than nothing. Best of luck to you...

I would suggest having them to join their friends in maintaining their health in fitness program.Having a companion is the best way to exercise so that they don't get bored and get motivated and supported by each other.Other than that,try to make them understand the importance of exercise in relation to their health and the risk factors and all those family history details.Try to explain them in a language that they will understand.If all fails let someone else like doctor can tell them the importance of health and then surely they will follow them.

Maybe you have to find another form of physical activities they will enjoy doing. Hitting the treadmill is a boring exercise. Better in your situation are exercises wherein you can do all together.You can try walking with a little of running, swimming and maybe the best in your case... ballroom dancing.
