Break-up

What will you do if your son or daughter is experiencing a break-up and you can see him or her having a difficulty to move on? Will you just ignore it because it is part of their growing up? Or do you have to comfort him or her. But what if your son or daughter is the type of person who doesn't like to open up with their parents?

I'm not a mum yet, so I'm answering this as a daughter. I would just like to feel that I'm loved during that crisis in my life. Verbal communication may be done, but if the person isn't the type to open-up to you, it's better to show it by nonverbal means. Saying stuffs that are break-up-related may irritate the person and it's not a good idea as of the moment. Just showing that you're there means a lot, really... it's when we think we have no one, and here comes our parents to the rescue. A tap on the back, a hug, or a simple gesture of 'I love you' helps, I assure you that.

I like the way you answer to my question. It's amazing to find out that a person like you having no experience on parenting issues yet can give a good advice. It shows that when your time comes to be a parent you can be a wonderful mom! :)

I would advise talking to him. You are his parent and he should be able to tell you anything. However if you do not talk to him as much and he has a problem opening up to you, then you should get a close friend of his to talk to him, maybe a relative or buddy. If he has an older brother or sister they too can talk to him. Break up is a hard thing even for an adult.

It is horrible when you see your son or daughter going through a hard time when you don't think that there is anything that you are able to do to help. However, during times such as these, I don't really think that there is very much that you can do. You just have to be there for her if she needs to talk to you about what she's been going through, and you should also be a shoulder to cry on if that is what she needs. Only time will really heal a broken heart, and I know that this is something that is said a lot, but it is true, and it always something that is worth remembering.
