Ebook vs Real book

I have been looking at buying e-books over traditional text books this coming semester. The gentlemen at the book store on campus told me it was a bad idea because I can't return the e-book when classes are over. When looking at the prices for the books I have seen that they are at least 50% cheaper then by the hardback version. Which when you sell the hard version back you end up with close to the same cost. But the major problem with that thinking is that more the 3/4 of the time I have to by a 200 dollar "new" edition ( which normally is only changing a few words in it), the following semester they do this again so I only get about 30 bucks from it. SO i guess the actual question is should I buy the e-book and not gamble with the cost, or should I get the actual textbook and hope I don't get screwed over in the end. Note: I already have a very good tablet that will not be replaced anytime soon so that is not a matter of concern. (Asus transformer prime)

Ebook is practical than real book beside of ebook is efficient, is not hard to bring because the book is so weight, and we can safe our earth from global warming, because there are many tree are cut down for material of paper. are you agree with me?

I like the ideas you brought up about saving the environment and the weight. I only live 2 blocks from school but only bring a few of the books at a time because they tend to hurt my shoulder(pulled it really bad in the military and it can become pulled very easily again).

are you college student right, when you make the notes are you prefer use a notebook (device) or notes. just bring a notebook you can save all of notes that you save before, like an assignment the lecturer should give an assignment send from via email, so lecturer never to lost more assignment that we submit,

I am a student right now. I current use regular notebooks because it makes taking notes in chemistry and my other science classes so much easier. When they get tablets where you can use a wand or pen to take notes as easy as on paper i will make the switch. I also think faster then I type and spend a lot of time correcting my mistakes so I an not get things off the board very fast on a notebook. Most of my teachers have their notes online where I can download them but it is better to write them down as it helps with learning the material not just memorizing them. Are you in school right now also?

I buy books for investment. I don't usually sell it after I'm done using it, unless someone really needs it ( might be a friend or someone). I would rather have the traditional books so I can keep it while e-book is stored in the computer / tablet which can be infected by a virus and in a glimpse you can neither retrieve or pass it to others.

Exactly... I love to keep books because it'l help you next decade. And might be the next generation of the family.

I run all my important programs on my Linux laptop so I do not have to worry about losing it to random glitches. The few e-books that I have used where also very easily redownloaded from the makers website so even if the laptop went down I would be able to get a new company. But I do like the idea of keeping the old book so you have something to re-read or reference if the internet went down.

Last semester I bought an Ebook text book for one of my classes. I was thrilled with it. The book would have cost $200 in the bookstore, but cost me $90 in the ebook version. Plus it was easier to find information. I could type in what I wanted to find and within a second what I was looking for was on the page. Also, the book weighed over ten pounds and having it as an ebook made it about 1 pound. Plus I have over 180 books on my Kindle and it is so light and easy to carry. What I do with my text books is find out what I need for the class and then check Amazon and other book selling sites. I have been able to find books at a fraction of what I would pay on campus. I remember buying a business law book for $5 (with free shipping) and it cost $175 in the bookstore. I was embarrassed to admit it. I check Amazon, Ebay, and any of the text book sites. I usually save about 90% on my text books for the semester. I would go with the tablet. I love mine (my boyfriend bought me the Kindle Fire for Christmas so I have both the Kindle and the Fire to use.) It saves money, it saves trees and it saves tons of weight on your shoulders.

I was going to do that also but ran out of cash before the semester started and had to use my Pell Grant to pay for them. This year I am saving enough to buy them when I go back. I use a regular tablet with a great e-book reader on it right now but have considered the kindle. I might be able to keep it since I gave my mom my IPad after i bought the new table. She has been hinting very strongly for one for her birthday. Finding a $5 law book was a very lucky find seeing as they could have asked for much much more and gotten it.

I would say that you should go for the hard book as reading from the hard book version is very comfortable than the e-book as it tends to strain our eyes more as compared to the hard copy version.I have tried this and found that when i am reading from the laptop then i was able to read 7 to 8 pages continuously and then my eyes were strained too much. But when i was reading from the book i was able to read much more pages than the e-book.And the hard copy version can be sold for the 70% of the original price and the e-book is non refundable.

Thanks for the comment about eye strain. My eye doctor has given me grief about my eyes lately. But I never really had that much of a problem with it as I can never sit for more then 10 minutes reading a school text book. But when I have it was a hard copy. I will have to give it a shot when I do laundry today with reading a random ebook from online to see if i get eye strain. As to the idea of getting 70% back I have never gotten that much. I pay 170 for a book and I am lucky to get 60-70 for it. And a lot of the times they are not going to use that book next year and only offer me around 35 for it. Thank you again for the comment.

I find eBooks to be more economical than hard books. Economical in the sense they are portable, they cost less and they last much longer than normal books. Can you imagine how many eBooks would fit in a 500 GB hard disk? Now imagine storing all those books in a book shelf. I think you would need a whole house to store them. If I have to decide between buying an eBook and a normal book I will go for the eBook every time.

To the up to the up of the I think that both ebook and conventional book has their own positives and negatives but since you have got tablet pc so in my view you should opt for ebook since you need not carry book with you all the time getting rid of its cost and weight ……….. Hare Krishna Ganesh

Nine times out of ten for leisure I would go for a regular book but for a textbook, I like the ebooks. For the simple reason is that I would rather slice off my own hands than to tediously look up information. I think my mind was tailor made for searching through things in a more technologically based way. And I'll be honest, it does free up a lot of space. It does rather agitate me when I have a stack of books and no way to get rid of them. Especially when you get caught in the turnover when schools change their textbooks, thus you have to be quick to sell them. So ebooks are for me for educational proposes. Because I can easily search things and given that I am going to be taking notes on a computer file anyway, that was just the easier solution. I did enjoy that when it was offered. I cringed when there was no ebook offered during my school career. Ebooks are the option that I would highly recommend, for ease of use if nothing else when it all boils down to everything.

Yeah if it will save you a lot of money you should go with the ebook. Saving money is always a plus in my book. It is seems that going that route would be the best all the way around. I hope that whatever you decide to do it will work out best.

Hello deaconroyal and everyone. I believe that ebooks and tablets are very useful for study, to learn, so on. But... I prefer to read paper books. Is more relaxing. I know that on the screen most of the people have problems with eyes. I have not. I can read many hours on the screen without any problem. I think the main problem is with the speed of information. Our brains and budies are not constructed to run in a very fast way like machines. We are not robots to input tausands of pages from e-books. We have to learn deep, to understand deep the meaning of the words, informations. So, is not important how much do you read or how fast. Is very important how deep. If you will read fast you can't understand deep an information. That is the reason why is very important to read slowly , in peace, to write by hand on paper notebook. Same time you are right. Using technology you ca do more things, cheaper and fast, but ... like a machine. I am a very good typist, I use computers from more then 15 years and now I miss something lovely. ... I think ebooks, computers, tablets, internet, makes us to became like robots, machines. So try to take a break, to think slowly time to time, and deep. A very good paper book is a very good friend for me. Same time I wish to have a tablet with tausands of book to be able to study, to learn fast. I think for students ebooks and tablets are very important and useful. For life paper book are more important. Again, to understand deeper anything you have to read and listen slowly, not very fast. And a good paper book is like a very good friend. When you look at it is like when you are with a friend. On the kindle.. you are like with a robot with tausands information on it.
