Mid-College Crisis

I had a huge life-crisis this year. I'm not really ready or willing to talk about it on mylot, but the short personally-censored version of the story has me at home taking a semester off and seriously considering whether or not it's in my best interest to go back. I've got serious doubt that I want to follow through with my major, and since I went to a specialized arts school... I can't really just change to what I thinking I do want to take. It's a horrible school anyway, in hindsight.
So I'm probably taking a 180 and going somewhere else, and taking myself in a different direction. I'm not sure where yet. I've got a whole lot of thinking to do on the subject.
Anybody out there been through the same thing?

Oh wow, sorry you feel like changing, are you thinking of starting over in your major or quitting college altogether? I can see you taking a break to think about it, I am not taking spring or summer classes, mostly due to I had no money for a spring class and I am not taking another class in the summer. Of course this gives me plenty of time to work on my book..:) But whether I go back or not probably depends on whether I can get a job, because my husband is too worried about our finances and I can't concentrate on my studies with his tension over me..:(

I hope by taking this break, your head will be clear enough to know what you really want to do. As for starting in the fall, I guess I will see when the time comes, plus the fact that I went online to save what classes I needed only to find that it may have changed because this fall my school is switching from quarters to semesters. By taking a break now, I can concentrate on revising my plan if I need to.

I'm thinking that I'm quitting that college and that major. Now that I've seriously taken a good look at myself and Digital Film/Media Production, I've realized that it was a huge contributing factor to my personal crisis, plus I don't even like it anymore and I haven't for quite some time. I don't think it would be in my best interest to keep going just for the sake of getting the degree. It's a very narrow degree for a narrow field that I'm pretty certain I don't want to work in for even a short period of time.
I do want to go to and finish a college, I'm just thinking that I'm going to want to go somewhere else for something else. I have a few ideas, but no solid plans at the moment. I'm still dealing with my personal crisis at the moment, and I will be doing that for quite some time.
It's nice to take a break, isn't it? Of course the break is less nice when you've got issues like these hanging over your head. I hope you're able to go back in the fall, or whenever it is you want to start back up again.

That's really what I'm hoping for too. When my academic advisor told me I could withdraw for awhile I was so relieved. I couldn't have faced the next quarter, I was a complete wreck. I feel much better now.
Have you gotten much time in to work on that since you've been on break? I haven't written anything in what seems forever, partially because of school and this crisis. I haven't had the time, energy, or the heart to work on anything.

Yes, it is! I absolutely adore my cat. I've taken to scratching her head and cooing, "Who loves you? Who loves you? I love you! I love this cat! I love this cat!" and happy nonsense like that.
She'll be a year old in April, and "officially" a cat and not my baby kitten anymore. She's on the small size for a cat but quite clearly cat-sized by now.

well, college life is full of swings. it is not uncommong for students to continue looking for their place in this world. even after people graduated from college, they still look for their place under the sun. some even do not practice in their work what they have studied in college. so do not be concerned of your dilemma or crisis, it will fade if you just move on. wishing you the best.

Well it seems like the sky is falling down at the moment and I've had to rip myself up into tiny little pieces and find a way to get on a fresh clean page. But I've also received loads of encouragement along the same lines. My dad keeps trying to encourage me by saying, "I knew exactly what I wanted to be at your age! A highschool math teacher!" Which is only encouraging because he wound up a patent attorney and never got any closer to teaching high school math than him saying he wanted to at my age.
Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind.

I have not yet gone to college, if I ever will because I am not sure what I want to do with my life. There are so many things I would like to do that I can't really for sure go about doing them. I do want to learn both Spanish and Italian and become a translator for both, I do want to own my own piece of land and farm a bit, and I wouldn't mind knowing how to design websites either. I also want to learn quilting, and I wouldn't mind being a CNA.
As you can tell there is so much I want to do that instead of going after just one right now, I've decided to wait. I think I will end up getting the rosetta stone software and learning what I don't already know, but that will be awhile yet.

Well for the price of those Rosetta Stone packages, I think you might as well go to college. lol I don't think it's a bad thing to wait though, college is a big commitment. I'm finding myself wishing that I had waited awhile rather than just diving right into it hoping for the best.

I can truly relate, Ally. When I was in college I was really unhappy. I was doing poorly in my classes and it was expensive. My heart was going into the navy. Yes, the navy! I was a navy groupie back then and I wanted nothing more than to enlist and be navy. I thought it over very carefully and even though it upset my hardworking parents who wanted to see me get a good college education, I quit college and joined.
Not only did I have the most exciting 12 years of my life as a navy woman, I toured Europe, learned skills and when I left the navy, finished my college education with my GI bill. Now I have veterans benefits which helps me stay healthy, a degree in Graphic Design and most importantly, NO REGRETS. =)

That's really inspiring, thanks for that! I'm not sure I want to join the navy myself(), but it's good to hear that quitting college actually worked out for you in the long run. My Mom's expressed some desire for me to go back but hasn't pushed me, though it upsets me to know that I'm going to be disappointing her. My Dad seems to have no feelings whatsoever, which is surprising considering he's been the one paying for my college.
"If you want to go somewhere else honey, I'll support you. I'm sure you'll figure it all out." He says. Which I'm extremely grateful for the support but I find the guidance a bit lacking.
