Karaoke - Would You? Have You?

Ireland

Hi everyone, Am just listening to some music here and Adele's 'Someone Like You' has just been playing. I sang this song 'karaoke-style' back in the Summer of 2011, at my older sister's birthday party. Her niece does part time singing at the weekend and has all the gear, it just reminded me of the occasion. I love music, I love singing (albeit to myself and usually just at home or quietly as I'm going round the supermarket!) but it got me to thinking. Just wanted to ask any of you, have you ever taken part in karaoke, or would you? What influences your decision? IrishGal77 :)

No matter how drunk I get (which isn't that often..honest) I would never, EVER get up to do karaoke. I've seen so many people show themselves up that I just couldn't do it..and get filmed on phones and things. Dancing on the other hand..well that's another matter entirely. Haha!

A new rock club opened here recently and a cousin of John's had a 40th birthday party held there. From the moment I went in to the moment I left I danced the whole time (apart from having a rest or going for a pee) and I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! Would I do it again? Most certainly...after a few "sherberts!"

Hi Janey, Thanks for responding. I always say to myself if I'm gonna sing I have to have a drink in me first (Dutch courage and all that!) but in hindsight, I'm probably better off singing totally sober. Trouble is, I never go out with the intention of singing.....I usually get 'dragged' into it. However....after having a few drinks inside me I think I'm the bees knees....or rather I don't give so much of a monkey's of what others think of me....you could say a lot of the old inhibitions just go out the window LOL but yeah, it's not so funny the next day if the video goes up on Facebook....or YouTube!!! Am with you on the dancing - absolutely love it! IrishGal77 :)

I go to karaoke for singing many times in here, especially with friends after eating/drinking...it is nice when we can sing and drink a bit, have fun time together...it is a reason why i can sing many songs but i don't learn by heart any song at all, i need to see its lyrics on a screen when i sing...

Thanks for responding ryanong. That's the beauty of karaoke, you don't need to know all the words...unless you REALLY want to show off your karaoke skills!! IrishGal77 :)

I have sang in karaoke.. but i did not really like it, since using a microphone really altered my voice, and i didn't like how it sounded. The music of karaoke is not good too.

Thanks for responding lady1993! Yeah, I agree, it is hit and miss with the karaoke machines and the quality of the music. There is also a 'certain' way to hold a microphone, I have a habit of holding it too close so I sound like I'm shouting rather than singing (well, that's what I tell myself!) IrishGal77 :)

I did in my 20's, IrishGal. I dont anymore because I really hate the bar scene. I love to sing as well but I just sing to myself as you said. Others may look at me weird like.....,Anyway. I have a brother who does that because he is an Elvis impersonator. I have watched him a few times but I dont partake anymore. Have a great day...

Hi CODYMAC, Thanks for responding. I'll never forget my first attempt at karaoke....I was about 19, maybe 20. I sang 'La Isla Bonita' and then did a duet, Oleta Adams 'Get Here' with my best buddy at the time. Sure we thought we were great! You're brother must get a fair bit of work as an Elvis impersonator I'd imagine? I'd queue!! Wishing you a good day too! IrishGal77 :)

Oh, he sucks... He just does local events and has yet to venture out of the Boise area. I live in Oregon and have been trying to get some gigs for him here. Not that easy when travel is soooo expensive... anyway.. thanks for the response.

Hi there IrishGal, Adele is a great singer :) !! I like her songs too!! Well, karaoke can be fun but I haven't yet participated in an 'official' karaoke session. I love singing, but but I've always stuck to singing with my guitar or solo. I guess I would really like to have a go at a round or two of karaoke sometime soon. Thanks for reminding me :D !! By the way, when you said "Summer of 2011", I was reminded of Bryan Adams' hit song 'Summer of 69'. Was it a coincidence or did you intend it to sound that way :)?

Hi Vvance, Thanks for responding. You sing and play guitar? Good for you! Nope, it was purely coincidental that I mentioned the Summer of 2011 as that's when I last sang in public. IrishGal77 :)

No problem! I should be the one thanking you, because you reminded me of my wish to take a shot at karaoke Yeah I do. And thank you for the kind words! Haha, well, guess it was just me then. Maybe the words summer and of were enough to remind me of his song.

Well, it has been quite a few yrs. now for me since I last went to Karaoke somewhere, and it was actually a lot of fun. My all time favorite is Whitney Houston's "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" to sing. I have actually been recorded singing this one and a couple of others. Just not sure I have the voice to do this as much, but have thought about it.

Hi KrauseHome, Thanks for responding! I love a lot of Whitney's songs, especially the ballads. I imagine that it takes quite a voice to sing any of her songs, kudos to you! IrishGal77 :)

in reality i never tried a karaoke session before...probably because i never felt an amusement singing popular songs watching words or original music...may be for many people is really amazing but i decided it is not for me!!

Hi tonyllenium, Thanks for responding. I get it, singing is not for everyone, even for those who enjoy music. Some would rather listen than sing, or if they sing perhaps would rather do so in the confines of their own home :) IrishGal77 :)

Yes. I have sung Billy Joel's song 'Piano Man' karaoke style. A friend influenced my decision.

Doing part time as singer? It sounds great as long as you have the voice and people don't throw stones when you sing, isn't it? Well, yes I have tried singing in a videoke before but then it was always like birthday parties or gatherings. Most of the time I just sing along with the others who are singing. It feels good to sing and having the confidence to be heard with all the people around you. But I am not that of a good singer sometimes gets shy as well on being the soloist to sing in videoke. Well, at least I tried, right?

Hi annavi23, Thanks for responding. Of course it takes a certain confidence and talent to be able to pull off a karaoke. Perhaps you are better than you give yourself credit for. Kudos to you for trying :) IrishGal77 :)

Hi thelmadacullo112659, Thanks for responding. I imagine that videoke is the same as karaoke except there is video involved? Another myLotter mentioned it above you too. I'm glad you enjoy the entertainment that stems from taking part in and listening/watching other people sing. Hope you get your videoke repaired soon :) IrishGal77 :)

I've never actually sung karaoke and with good reason - I can't sing! Seriously though I do enjoy singing along to songs on the radio, but I would never inflict it on other people.

Hi suzukigirl1970, Thanks for responding and welcome to myLot! I was going to ask you if you're sure that you can't sing but to me you sound pretty redundant as you say 'with good reason'. It's just that some people would be shy and would rather say they can't sing than admit to being shy/nervous. Not to worry though, at least you sing along to the radio, I'm happy for you! IrishGal77 :)

Filipinos love karaoke and I am one of them. I think my parents were the one who influenced me so whenever i go out with my friends before, we are used to spending a lot of time inside a karaoke place. :)
