Movies in the theater vs buying or renting a movie.

My husband and I go to a movie at the theater about once every 2 months. It costs $30 for the 2 of us. We usually rent movies from a store, buy used movies, or rent them for free at the library. But sometimes we just want the whole 'movie' experience. We would go to the theater more often but it's just too expensive after buying the tickets and popcorn and pop. We even buy the large combo popcorn and pop because it costs less than buying each item separate and we get free refills. Even when we go to the matinee it costs $27. I remember when the matinees were half price, now they are only discounted $1.50. Maybe they cost so much because celebrities aren't getting paid enough. Yeah, right!

If we have a sitter for the 3 kids we will try to catch a movie when we can. We always go to the matinees and we also order the large combo with the free refills. I cannot remember how much it cost the last time we went to the regular theater. We also have a reduced price theater near us. It gets the movies after the regular theater is done with them but before they go out on dvd. The prices there are $2 before 6pm and $3 after 6. The 3D movies are $1 extra for all movies. This is the way we enjoy movies too. The prices of the refreshments are the same as the normal theaters however. No savings there. But it does make for a good day or night out when we can get away.

Oh yes and let me also add that in order for us to go to the theater it has to be a movie that we both really like. If we don't really like it we would rather rent it from RedBox when it comes out.

We are lucky in the fact that we like the same type of movies. For us to go see it at the theater it really has to be one that we really like and would like to see it in the theater. Our local Omni (cheap theater) now has "Underworld Awakening" in 3D and we both want to see that...now if we can just line up a sitter! LOL @ the candy sneaking. I still do that.

When our kids were still at home we always went to the cheap theater. It gets way expensive when you have to pay a sitter and the movie, and we usually went out to eat first. We used to sneak candy in the theater! We don't do that anymore. Haven't done it for a very long time. We have to compromise on movies because we like different styles. We do the same thing as you - if we can't find a movie in the theater that we both agree on, we rent one. Sometimes we rent 2 because we still can't agree!

yeah we used to do that too, we would rent, but not anymore. the place is so small, we just have this small stores at the mall and yeah they don't usually have the latest but that's okay because some are still not out on DVD hehehe. oh so yeah here is the price of the movie tickets before, as far as i can remember. when i was in high school, i remember it was only PhP 25-27. then in college it went to 30-70, and that was just a few years ago. i just graduated 2 years ago and now the price is PhP250. what a change right. only those who earn a lot can make watching at the movies a habit hehhehhe so expensive

It is expensive! We only go every other month. We usually buy or rent movies. Do you ever rent movies from the library? Our library has a huge selection. They don't have current movies that just came out on DVD, but they aren't too far behind.

I never go to the movies these days. I tend to buy DVDs from Amazon and Ebay and then after watching them I can either keep them or put them back on Amazon or Ebay to sell. Going to the movies is something that I find expensive and often uncomfortable because if I need to go out to the bathroom, for instance, I am going to miss a chunk of the movie. With a DVD at home, I can pause it. And then if I resell, I can bet most if not all of my money back that I've spent. OK, I may not see the very latest movie, but I am happy to wait a few weeks or months until it is released on DVD. _Derek

We don't resell our movies. We only buy them if we really, really like the movie and would watch it more than once. Sometimes it's just fun to go to a movie with my husband. Something to do to get out of the house in the winter.

I went to see star wars with my nephew when it came out in 3D and the tickets were about $12.00, one adult one child. I don't do the whole getting food there thing but he wanted it, and that cost about $15.00. It was ridiculous. I would much rather watch a movie at home then to spend all that much. Though I do like the movie experience myself and thus will go once in awhile. There are $2.00 theatres here with older movies, and then there is like a $3.50 movie theatre here with the new releases, but I've not been there.

Was that $12.00 for the 2 of you? That doesn't sound too high. Once when I was complaining about the price of the snacks being more than the movie, one of the theater employees told me that theaters make their money from the snacks, not the movies. How crazy is that?

Me and my wife used watch movie in theater together with our college classmates only if we like the movie. But since we have our son, we haven't went to a theater. The last time we had theater was about 3 years ago. Whenever we go to the movie theater, we brng our own food, we bon't buy popcorn in the movie house since it is a little bit pricy than buying popcorn outside movie houses. I think, if you have a good TV and sound systems, better stay at home. I assume that you will not spend that much on your electricity bill.

Yes, you need also to check whether the cost of going in a movie theater is the same as the cost that will be added to your electric bill if watching movies in your house. Not only that, if the food you will eat in a theater will be comparable to those food you will eat while inside the house watching movies. That's what you call practicality...lol...

lol! I never compared it to my electric bill! That's funny. Our electric bill is a lot more, but it is almost the same price as our water bill.

ME and my boyfriend is a movie addict too. I think we watched more often than you guys. We watched, like 2 or 3 times a MONTH depending on the featured movie of the month. I think watching movies on theaters is really satisfying but of course you need to choose the movie if it's worth watching on the big screen or just enough to watch at home. In our case, we watch movies in theaters if its an ACTION, HORROR, and SCI-FI movies. We also consider the producer and director. =)

My husband and I have different tastes in movies. I like suspense with twists and some comedies. He likes action and movies about history stuff and comedies. We either compromise and go with a comedy or he gets his choice one time and I get mine the next. We usually pick a movie because of who is in it.

I know exactly what you are saying. I almost never go to the movies anymore because it is so expensive for 2 hours of enjoyment. Once in awhile there will be a movie that I feel needs to be experienced in the theater, but most times I just watch it on demand or from netflix.

A lot of times the movies aren't even 2 hours long anymore. I feel like I get ripped off when I'm watching an 86 min movie and have to pay the same amount as the 110 min movie in the next room. But we still enjoy going once in awhile.

It is quite expensive to watch a movie in the theater nowadays. Renting or buying the DVD version is the cheaper way as it can be watched numerous times. We tend to share among friends and relatives when we have a new one and they will do the same. But watching a film in a theater is really an experience that is unmatchable by any homes. The sound system, the big screen and even the atmosphere just make you more into the movies you are watching. Likewise with the popcorn, to eat it in the theater is just different from eating it at home. Theaters in my city are mostly mini types with about 100-200 seats. They usually have discounted fare (40%-50%)on Wednesday nights.

I'm not sure how many seats are in our theaters that we go to here. There's a cheap theater, I'm not sure how many theater rooms it has. Then there are 2 full price theaters. One of them has at least 10 theater rooms and the other probably has 6. My husband and I go for the whole theater experience.

According to me watching movies in the theater is better than buying or renting a movie because in case of 3D movies watching at home will not give proper sound and picture quality.

Yeah, I would think that 3D movies would be better to watch in a theater. I need to go to one of those 3D movies sometime. I've seen that they have updated the glasses to wear while watching the 3D movies. They used to be blue on one side and red on the other.

My teenage sons are the movie watchers in our family. Mostly they just rent movies. They only buy certain movies that they like for collections and repeat watching. They go to theater occasionally with friends if there are really popular movies out. When they do, I made sure they bring their student ID cards for discounts and they usually refrain from buying any refreshments there...

That's good that your sons get a discount for being students. They do that here also. 3 more years and I'll get a senior discount - and I'm not talking about 'senior' as in high school LOL. My husband and I HAVE to get pop and popcorn. Ok, well we don't really have to, but for us, movies and popcorn just go together like Mary Kate and Ashley Oleson, Ying and Yang, Milo and Otis, hehe, you get the point I'm sure!

I haven't gone to the movies in so long. Honestly I rent from redbox. Each month you can get a free movie. Also, the rate in which new movies come out is so much faster that I don't mind waiting. I see this as an opportunity form e to save money too. But it is fun to go to the movies once in a while.

Do you have to rent a certain amount of movies to get one free? That sounds like a good deal. My son rents from redbox but he hasn't mentioned the free monthly movie. Can you rent any movie for free or do they have a list of free ones?

I also most of the times rent the movies at my home from the stores but every now and then if i feel that the movie is very good then i cannot wait for the DVD print so i just take my good friends to the theater and then enjoy the movie in theater experience.Mostly I prefer the morning shows as it costs me Rs 120 per person and later on it increases to Rs 220 per person.

Hmm, we don't have morning showtimes. We have matinees that are in the afternoon and then the evening showtimes. What time do the morning movies start where you live? I don't know what Rs is. I'm assuming it's your money but we use dollar signs ($).

It's the whole experience. We like going to the theater sometimes. We haven't been to a 3D movie yet, have you?
25 Mar 12
Its actually more enjoyable to watch the movies in the theather. However its cheaper to buy, rent DVDs. I do both. Again, going to the movies is about going with that someone or group of friends. But at home,... i can watch alone.

Yep, I'm with ya, I also enjoy time alone to watch a movie. There's just something nostalgic about watching a movie in the theater, with popcorn and pop. We have to have the popcorn and pop!

Watching movies at theaters are costly compared to just renting it. The only difference though is that the enjoyment is great in theaters than the tv. We see big screens and good audio quality. Plus when it's a 3D movie, it is even better. But if we are just plainly looking for entertainment and see how the movie is, then we should go for renting or buying a movie.

Well I go to the theater when I really want to see a certain movie in theater. I almost never do 3D, and there's a first-run theater around here that only charges $3.50 for an adult at a matinee show with a $7.50 evening price. Plus there's the 2nd run theater that shows movies in their 2nd run for just a dollar or two. I also rent movies, I get them from redbox and a separate movies through the mail service, and I get a few for free at the library of course. I buy movies that are my favorites.

I rarely go to the movies, honestly I find that there are no movies that I am willing to pay the price for. But if I go,I refuse to pay their exorbitant prices for their snacks and drinks. let's be real,we will not starve or die of thirst in the 2hours of the movie. But if i want something I make myself a Baggie of trail mix(all kind of nuts, raisins, dried cranberries...) and put it in my purse, with a bottle of water! I just hate to be taken for a ride!!

Me and my husband we go every now and then but for a movie that we really want to see in the thearter. We have a 14 month old so going is nearly impossible right now unless family is in town to watch our daughter then we go. Normally we just wait till they are out on movies to rent them at the redbox we dont' buy many movies unless they are kid movies and we get those a discount store where they are most likely been bought and used before but are in still good to watch and stuff. This past weekend we went to movies and the last time we went was when Harry Potter was in the movie theater. The next time probably won't be till my husband birthday in a few weeks. We try to go out on a few dates while people are in town. We go through a discount places for movie tickets as well. So it saves us a few bucks.

I couldn't even tell you the last time that I went to a movie theatre it's been a long time. You're right, it's so expensive and if a person does go, it's quite a treat. I love the whole big screen experience. The last movie I remember seeing on the big screen was Titanic when it first came out. It's no wonder movies are expensive because it takes millions to make them these days and they want to make millions even billions in profits from them. I can't afford to go to the theatre but I watch trailers of new movies online sometimes and when the video comes out in stores, I might buy it. I used to get movies from the library too, that is a good place to get them only problem is they're usually older movies that I seen before.
