Light from Computer monitor as the only source of light

Hello everyone! I'm just wondering if it's advisable to make the computer as your only source of light in the room while you're doing your stuff in it? I sometimes worked late on computer but I have someone with me who can't sleep with the lights on, so I have no choice but to do my thing without the light. But, I'm kind of worried because I felt like my eyes ache without the light. So, please help..need to hear you out. Thank you!

I too follow the same practice like you as my husband returns home being very much tired after his whole day's work at the hospital and immediately after taking dinner goes to bed. He also can't sleep with the lights on, so I have no other alternative but to put off all the lights and do my work on the computer making it the only source of light in the room.

Yeah, kind of hurts your eyes right? I was just going with it but I couldn't deny the fact that it's already getting uncomfortable. So, well it's bad.hehe. Thank you, Doctordidi!

Well usually when I do the same my eyes ache too but not as much when I leave the room light open. When I leave a small light on the desk is all ok :)

Thanks lakanta! Yeah, you're right but I would still prefer to have the lights on. It helped but my eyes still hurt or maybe it was just my desk lamp, its light maybe not suitable for my eyes.

When using a TV or computer you should always have a source of background light to illuminate the rest of the room at a comfortable level. This should be arranged so that there are no distracting reflections on the screen and so that it illuminates the wall behind the screen and, of course, your work area. In order to avoid eye strain from looking at a fixed distance for long periods, the eyes should be encouraged to look away from the screen from time to time (approximately every ten minutes).

I knew it, for long periods of hours using computer without lights I notice later my sight would get blurred. Though, I tried to adjust my screen like lowering the brightness it doesn't help. I get headache also in the morning and maybe this is because of that. Thank you for responding to my concern, owlwings!

hi neonmay25 my roomie asked me to turn off my lamp at eight as she wanted to sleep but I will not do this as working by the only light from the computer gives me bad headaches behind my eyes'this is not good for us as the experts say the room should be lighted so theres no glare and the surrounding around you are well lighted. I know f rom experience that this is hard on your eyes, I really think nobody should just work from the light on the computer as it strains our eyes too much.Let the other person don a sleep mask as losing your eyesight is not good at all.

True! It's better this way. You cannot sacrifice your eyes for that. I am worried because I kind of become near-sighted and I thought this would just go away but lately I've been having this and I tried to do some exercises. I don't like wearing eyeglasses and most of all I don't want to lose my precious eyesight:( Thank you for responding Hatley!!

Hi neonmay25 WELCOME TO MYLOT! I tend to use my laptop. I will settle in and start doing something and hubby comes brings his fluffy b**t to bed earlier than I go to bed. I get tired of moving room to room. So I got a little nightlight and have it on my bedside table. It seems to balance the light from the computer with the nightlight. Anyway while I can comfortably do mylot I cant work on other sites that I might need pen and paper. So I generally will come visit mylot then or just watch a movie or catch up on something else on the computer. I also use it as a good time to write emails. I have my letters down on the computer and type pretty fast. Good thing hubby does not hear good or he would hear me typing fast on the computer LOL Since I got the little light I don't notice eye strain. Hope this helps. Have a good day.

Hey, marie! Thank you! hehe. Yeah, I'll try to do that. I am worried because I have noticed lately, my eyes becoming itchy and short-sighted. I think it's because of that, because when I stopped doing my stuff without the lights for awhile, I don't feel this discomfort at all. But it's really important to give your eyes a break with or without lights. I don't want this to get worse. Thanks again! and have a nice day!:p

Marie, I can't work out what "b**t" is. Have you "spelt" it correctly?

You can buy a small table light that you use. You need enough light when using a computer or even when studying, otherwise, you will end up straining your eyes.

That is so true, I blinked a lot to compensate but it just really hurts when the only light in the room is from the computer and you sit there in front for long hours. My friend tried to tell me that it is okay, he is doing that also but I think not. So, I went here to inquire from all of you, I guess obviously it's never been okay. Thank you, Mashnn! I'll do what you say :)

I know what you mean and if you see flashes of light, it is trouble in bold. I wear spectacles and work for so many hours. So, I do keep the light on and take many breaks too. do check your eyes and keep a table lamp or change the computer from the room. My sister in law slept in the computer room one night and when I switched the light she became mad at me, what to do.

Yeah, maybe I think I have to have my eyes checked by a doctor. I'm just on denial, pretending nothing's wrong and it would just go away. But I know something's really wrong with my eyes. It's very important to take some breaks and do some eye exercises which I already do now.:) Thanks sreekutty!
