Normal or abnormal winter

Is it just me, or did other people have an abnormal winter this year too?
I am not talking about an extra large storm (20 year storm or century storm). I am talking about the way the winter season normally works.
Normally, for my area, the coldest months are January and maybe the first week of Feb. When winter starts here, it gradually gets colder until after the first of theyear and then it is realy cold for about 4 - 6 weeks. Then, in Feb is starts getting warmer and continues till Spring arrives.
This year, it got cold really fast in early December; and then, it started warming up in Jan and continued through Feb. Still warming this month.
What about you? Have you noticed any change in the way your winter normally works? Is the cold coming sooner or later? Does it start warming up earlier or later?

Yeah this years winter has been abnormal. And recently we have been having really warm weather like in the eighties. Now it has dropped down to the fifties. I like the idea of it being warm but it just isn't normal. So that causes a lot of storms, etc.

Any time the weather is not normal you can get unusual storms. Storms that occur before storm seasons start, storms that are very strong, and even storms in areas that don't ususally see them.

I think it just means we all have to be MORE prepared for extreme weather and not ignore storm warnings just because we were safe in previous storms.

Yeah it is sad all the storms that different areas have been having. There are been a lot of people who have lost their lives because of Tornados, hurricanes, etc. So nice weather or really isn't good. I would like for the weather to be like it should. But with all the global warming, etc. It's just not normal anymore.

I really am not sure what normal weather would be any more. There has been a lot of level that really have seemed to be rather insane to say the very least. I think that this winter was actually comfortable. When normal weather leads to a lot of snow coming down and icy roads, I don't think that I'm going to really complain too much about the weather. It does save me a great amount of headaches to say the very least.
Of course, when it gets to 70 or 80 degrees Fahrenheit when the winter is not quite over during about the last week, there is just something about the weather that might be the slightest bit off. The climate has changed. Whether this is temporary or just an example of the consequences of what humanity is doing catching up with us in the worst way, debate on that as you wish. I just have a feeling that the summer will be a scorcher.

Like a lot of people I have been noticing small changes over the past few years - stronger storms, more frequent storms, milder winters, etc. But, this is the first year where the actual winter patter has changed.
It always started to cool in late Sept and continued getting colder with the coldest month being Jan and then in Feb is started warming up. The highs and lows may have fluctuated; but, the basic pattern stayed the same.
This year in my area, it still started cooling in late Sept; but, by Dec we had temps that were more like Jan (and we thought we were in for a REALLY cold Jan). By Jan the warming trend has already started and it continued getting warmer. Not normal.
The climate has changed and will probably continue to change. Global warming is real - the only debate is whether this is normal, manmade, or normal but speeded up by man.
I am waiting to see what will happen this summer. I live in a desert community and 20 years ago it was not uncommon for us to be in the 120's for a month or more and even get up into the 130's occasionally. But, the last 3 - 4 years we have rarely hit 120 and it doesn't stay there very long.

We have been warm and dry and mild all winter. Beginning to get a few good days of rain off and on. None of this is normal here. I keep waiting for snowstorms to hit us in April and ruin the fruit trees.

I don't think we need to worry about that this year. I read a report saying this has been the "warmest winter in recorded history". The temps where I live have been steadily climbing (with just small occasional dips in temp). So, I really do not forsee a sudden snowstorm coming in; but, anything is possible.

This was the strangest winter I have experienced in the years (35) I have lived in Savannah. It was very mild we only experienced a few days of weather in the 30s and I think only about 3 or 4 nights below freezing. Short sleeves and summer like weather in the 70s and 80s in February and continuing up to now in March. The bugs have been out, in full biting swing, since February....

My daffodils and hyacinth were in full bloom in Feb instead of March. We normally do get into the low 30's several nights each winter and have frost on our vehicles; but, this year that all happened a month early in December instead of in Jan. Not normal at all!

in february it was warm
I kept telling myself 'well March isn't here yet'
then half way to April the snow was already gone I love it but it is certainly abnormal compared to last year and the years before

I know. Over the years we have gotten used to a certain "pattern" to our seasons; but, that "pattern" seems to be changing and this year it seems to be really obvious that things are no longer "normal".

I am in the inland of California where temperature is really bad throughout the summer. Yes, I noticed that the winter this time was quite abnormal. In November, it did not get cooler at night. Moreover, in December, the sun was still quite hot. We were supposed to get rain. But this time it was horrible. All three months were mostly dry. March is usually the month of heavy rain. But oh my god, this time it seemed like the clouds were having some kind of drought.

Most of the people here are saying that it has been warmer and dryer this past winter than normal. Unless we start getting more rain (to make up for the lost snow), we may be facing some major droughts even in areas that do not normally have droughts.

Last year our winter seemed to be longer and we had more snow. This year it seems that our winter was a lot warmer and not something I really complained about. We had two days of snow and ice but it melted by the next day around 2 pm, and I loved that. We got to enjoy the beauty without the hassle of dangerous roads, and delays, nor too terribly cold temperatures.
I think our summer will be hot because of it but I am not too terribly concerned over it. Our winters are usually somewhat mild as is.

My winters are a bit milder than yours - no snow; but, we do get frost and some ice and this year it happened in Dec instead of Jan. Don't know if this will mean a hot summer since out summers normally get up in the 120's anyway.

I did read an article that said this was the "warmest winter in recorded history" With things like this happening more frequently, I don't see how people can say that "global warming" is not happening. They can disagree about the "causes" all they want; but, unless something changes I think we need to prepare for many more years of warmer that normal temps.

Where I live we have had a very wacky winter! We hardly had any snow! We usually get it from December through Feburary! We didn't have any real snow until January and it was not alot! All winter it has been mild and most of March it has been on the warm side! It has felt more like May and June then March! It has been so nice the grass is getting green allready! Some breeds of birds migrated back earlier then usual! Alot of people I know have been battling the flu and sinus infections like crazy all winter! That is unusual, too and I am one of them! I have seen tons of people wearing shorts, tank tops, sun dresses, scandels and flip flops recently! It is so weird! This is truly the weirdest winter I have seen and I blame it on globel warming!

I did read a report the other day saying this was the "warmest winter in recorded history". Where I live we did have the cold; it just came earlier and went away sooner.

TOTALLY abnormal! This winter has been nuts. And not in the normal way where we, up in Minnesota, get pounded on with snow. It wasn't at all like that. I think we had a total of about 7 inches all winter long of snow. Last year we had several large snow storms, including one storm where we had 20 inches of snow. I barely got any use out of my new snow tires... . I'm happy about it, but now that it's March and it has been 70 degrees out, I am expecting a super hot, super humid summer. Which I am not looking forward to sweating my brains out.Agh!

Where I am we have already hit 90; but, that is not a record for this time of year here.
If you aren't getting enough snow, will you have to worry about a "drought"? Many areas across the US rely on snow melt for a large portion of their annual "rainfall".

Yes me, too. But I wasn't so lucky.
This year in Italy was wery cold and it snow in all the Country, but not where I live... Is a little sad for me, but it is the true.
And now here seems summer... people go out with T-shirt and we are only at 25th of March!

We have people that go out in t-shirts all year roud; but, the only ones that do that in the winter are the ones who come south to escape the snow (snowbirds).
The people who live here all year wear coats and jackets in the winter and we can easily tell who belongs and who is a "winter visitor". Normally our winter visitors leave in late April/early May; but, many are leaving now because it is already so warm.

Hi speakeasy,
The Winter just gone was the mildest I can ever remember so I'd be talking about a good few years here. Temperatures around Christmas were in the low to mid teens which is a stark comparison to the year before where temps reached minus 16 degrees Celsius, maybe even less.
Temperatures at the moment are very good for March here in Ireland, with temperatures averaging in between 15 and 19 degrees Celsius. It won't last for very long but better to get it than not.
Years ago it was possible to somewhat predict the weather throughout the seasons; now it's very hard.

That makes it very hard for people who garden or farm to plan for successful harvests. Normally my daffodils and hyacinths start blooming in mid March. This year they started blooming in Feb and are finished blooming now.
