I just responded to a discussion and I found our an interesting dish and it is called Deviled Eggs. Since I like cooking, so I looked it up online. I feel hungry to look at the photo of Deviled Eggs. How come this nice dish will have such a horrible name?:) I love China

I think they call it Deviled Egg, because they put some hot spices in it. That picture of deviled egg, seems delicious, my friend.

I get the picture, the hell's inferno in the mouth! That's very descriptive and imaginative.

My husband love deviled eggs so much! The last time I made deviled eggs was last month and my husband kept on asking me to make one again. ;-)

Deviled or devilled egg (most earlier cookery books spell it with a double 'l') is a halved hard boiled egg with the yolk taken out, mixed with mayonnaise and spices and put back into the halved whites. An alternative description is 'spiced' or 'stuffed eggs'. The term can be used of other foods treated in a similar manner with herbs and spices, for example, devilled crab, lobster and ham. The word first appeared in print (in a cookery context) at the end of the 18th Century but was, presumably, current before then. There seems to be no etymology other than that rich and spicy foods were associated with the devil (or the hotness of Hell) although, since many cookery terms come from the French, it seems at least possible that the word originally had nothing to do with the devil (the French for 'devil' is 'diable' and the suffix 'dé' usually implies 'taking something out' - which is certainly what is done to the yolks when preparing devilled eggs and crab).

Hi,youless~ It definitely seems yummy. And based on my research, should taste good too. Think I saw that a couple of years ago on a Chinese newspaper. Never tried to make one though. With Easter about one week away,My interest in egg dishes is just increasing. Maybe I should try to look up the recipes online and try to make some myself. Wish me luck! And yes,it is a funny name. Have a nice day~

I think it's because the original recipe called for a dusting of paprika on top, and paprika is read, so red = devil, I guess. LOL I've eaten those for years, and they taste wonderful. I've never really thought of the name before. As Shakespeare said "a rose by any other name is just as sweet" so I suppose that a deviled egg by any other name is just as delicious.

Danish, before my relatives ever make 2 types of deviled eggs, one with paprika and another one with black pepper. Both tastes very delicious as well. But, what should we called it, the black pepper egg? Any name for that dish??

You never heard of deviled eggs? I never think about how dishes might sound to people who don't normally eat Western kind of food. Have you heard of Angel Food cake?

Oh, yes. Deviled eggs are great! And you can add different things to make it hot or more tangy too. Deviled makes it interesting I think.

Youless, i ever eaten this dish when i visited my relatives during the recent Lunar celebration. Pity that this dish don't have a much better name. It is a little spicy but tastes very delicious. I haven't to prepare this recipe on my own yet. It is good that i came across this recipe through this discussion. Maybe next week, i will give it a try if i am free at home.

cooking - cooking something tasty
i have known this dish all my life as deviled eggs..once i went to a church that wanted me to call them dressed eggs, i thought that was weird.. but they have always been deviled eggs to me.. as my mom made them alot for us and my husbands mom has them at every big event. she taught my husband how to make them and he is really good at it.. people beg him to make them at his work.. and my daughter goes nuts over them.. his recipe is simple, he uses miracle whip, the yellow of the egg and sugar and scoop back into the white halfs.. very tasty..

I'm not sure where the name came from but I used to love them as well. They are not as a rule considered to be hot and spicy but if you prefer to add some hot spices then you can. I prefer no hot spices of any kind in my food. I just think it tends to ruin the initial flavour of most foods and make it all taste the same, which is hot. I made them alot for Easter. I add things like mayo, pepper, maybe even some mustard, celery and maybe onions to the yoke taken out and then stuff the white part again with it. You can put pepper or whatever you like on the top.
