Dear friends
My name is misspelled in the Transfer Certificate (TC) of my son (I got the same on March 24, 2012). I did not felt angry but I informed the same to those two who were sitting in the room and issuing the certificates. She told me the name is written in our records exactly the same and the handwriting is yours! (how come my handwriting will come in their records). I felt angry this time; I asked how can I misspell my name? She said then I have to check the records again and you have to come another day, now I can’t move from this seat as I have to issue 120 TC today. Then she asked me to make call on the next working day that is today, 26th March. Today I called her and she said, you are right; your name is writing wrong in the TC and agreed to issue a new TC with the corrected name.
I am from South and now living in North part, my name is not so familiar here and I can understand when somebody misspelled but blaming me for their mistake, is it fair?
Here my friends know my name is Sreekala, which is one word, they have written it as Shree Kala.
How do you feel if you are in my position?
[I am starting a topic after a long gap, hope every one is doing good]
Date: March 26, 2012.

Every certificate has it's own value. These are the some of the essential matters in your life. Make sure that you have all your certificate with proper contents. The certificate makers can do anything because it doesn't matter it has mistakes do any thing because they don't care for it but make sure that you have all the proper contents in it because it's yours.

Hello thewonderboy,
On the first instance I thought that it is ok, since it is my son's certificate, it may not create any problem (mother's name), but on a second thought I pointed out the wrong spelling to them. Good I have corrected the mistake, in the other school, they are not accepting if there is any mistakes in TC (if the name is not matching in certificate and TC)

I always encounter this problem. When asked on fast foods, when registering on programs, I'm even named as Mr.! Well, my name is spelled as Jan Portia. So sometimes the Jan becomes John and that's the time I belong on the XY chromosome. The worst part comes in Portia. Sometimes it is spelled as Porsha, Porcha, Porshia, Forcia, Porchia, etc. It's frustrating really. It was like, "that's not me!". On the bright side, some people also wonder if it's Porsche when they hear my name. But I will only answer, "No , that's my nickname" jokingly. This problem only takes on the serious side during critical papers like legal docs and the like, so during minor incidents like on fast foods, I just shrugged it off.

Hello Jan,
When people write the name wrongly in official papers then it creates lots of problems and frustrations.
I think the officials should take extra care while furnishing the details in documents. Once the mistake happens then rectifying the same is really tests our patience.

Hi Sreekala,
I agree with you. Very much. Not only that it will test our patience, it will also cost us in correcting our names on legal documents. It will take a lot of waiting time.

I get annoyed if someone does that.Everyone knows that my name is spelled this way-Kathleen.It is a common name in America & Europe. There are a number of girls who have that name in our country but it's not so common so most people misspell my name & I find it annoying when they do.

Hello my dear Sree! Oh it's the other way around with me. I was in my elementary days and I've been writing my name with letter "h" in it. My name is teresa so I write it as theresa. My mom is too busy that time so she wasn't able to correct me,actually that's also the spelling she knows. I just realized that it was wrong when I had to transfer school and a birth certificate is needed. All of my report cards in my elementary grades have the name of Ma. Theresa and that it is wrong,it should be Maria Teresa, yay!
But in your case,I don't wanna be blamed for the mistake of others. I think I will feel the same,I will for sure get irritated and mad.

My dear mtr,
In our place, that 'h' is absolutely correct dear. I mean people are adding 'h' with this name. I hope there is no other problem with your name and it spelled the same way in all documents.
In our case it is rectified and I have heard that others also faced similar problem with their names (parent’s).

Hi my dear Sree!
It's okay to put an "h" to names in our country but the thing is,in my birth certificate, there's no "h" attached to my name so there goes the problem. What is written in the birth certificate should be used in all of my details.

Hello Sreekala,
I think i would also have reacted like you if i were in the situation.
Spelling mistakes in name no one can tolerate it.
But this is bit common here in north INDIA as we spell it Shree/Shri not Sree/Sri.
I remember the name of famous HINDI actress Sreedevi i have seen in many of the places her name spell out as Shridevi.
It looks bad when someone says that's its your fault when its not ours.I think the teacher should understand it that no one is going to write his/her name wrong at least.

Hello svg,
I agree with you, that is one of the reason I didn't get angry on seeing the mistake on the first hand. However, they have records in front of them when they prepared the TC where my name is written correctly. How they can apply their own likes to spell other's name.
How are your kids, hope they are on their vacation now and eagerly waiting to join to the new class in next week. Best of luck and love to them.

hi sree, how are you? There is a well known journalist in Mumbai who writes regularly in the Indian Express newspaper and whose name is Leher Kala.Obviously she is a North Indian and therefore i am not surprised that these people also made the mistake of cutting your name into 2 parts.Yes, it is quite annoying but these sort of things do happen in our country and especially in government offices. We have to bear it.

Hello Veejay,
I am fine. Hope you are doing good.
My name in their record is Sreekala Anilkumar, and they wrote in TC as Shree Kala Anilkumar. They know me well that I am the mother of the child (if they use Shree instead of Mr.), still I can't understand the logic by splitting my name according to their wish.
We can't blame anybody if they are not familiar with all names. But they can use the common sense at least.

Hi kala,
Howz you?
Though I have not had such issue in my case but I know so many of the similar thing in my college. Students come to us and ask 'sir my name is misspelled or my surname is different from this". This is the lackadaisical attitude of the people who are there issuing certificates or admit cards.
Ofcourse non officially I have had many a time my surname misspelled. And you know what could be the reaction.

Now I really started to think, what is the problem of these staff, lack of knowledge or careless attitude. They should realize they are playing with career of others. It may create problems at some point in their life.

You are the only one on this planet who calls me by the name - "Chhotu". I never had an elder brother and always thought and wished I had one. When you refer me by this name, I see the love and the care of an elder brother in you. And I cannot even think of saying no to what this brings in for me

I am sure when I die, the LIC people will have many good reasons not to pay back to my family

For you I think it is still ok, but I am really fed up and I nver care of it, because I know how much trouble the people have when they call me or while writing my name. You can read and spell my name correctly - THANKAPPAN - but, here in north (Mumbai) I am, really a pain whenever they spell my name. So, wherever required, instaed of telling my name, I used to tell them, the spelling and take care of it, call anything you want but the spelling is ...this.
Also, the mistake they do a lot from the school and colleges. You know, when I passed my degree from the university and they issued me the certificate (mark list and certificate in a book form, earlier). Though I have passed in 2nd grade, there were a seal of FAILED on the main page. I got so violent and angry because based on this certificat I had to apply for my higher studies and there were not much time to apply in different colleges. THe next day I ran to the university and gone to the specified dept. and corrected and got the new certificate immediately.
So, the errors are possible but they need to accept their mistake and even they shuld make sure that it should not spoil the student's future in any way.

Why should children object to their father's name for which he himself is not responsible? You should correct your daughter Thangappan[in Tamil it can be THangappan and not THankappan isn't it?]; I feel it is not fair that a daughter should say this to her father however loving the child is.

Thanks, So you have lot issues along with your name in home as well as in your office. I have heard this name since my childhood so I don’t feel anything bad with your name (one of my childhood friend’s father name is exactly the same. There was another neighbour too with the same name. We used to call him Thankan chettan.
I think your daughter will realize the beauty of your name once. She will love your name other than any hero’s name in the world once she becomes matured.

Hello Thanks,
That was disgusting, it is a serious mistake they put the seal as ‘failed’. I can’t understand where they are concentrating while preparing important documents. All these mistakes can spoil one’s career for sure. I know your name well as I am from the same state of yours. The name is very much familiar to me.
In my case it is not a big one as I am the mother of the child. Still I felt, this is the beginning and if I can correct it now then why should I spoil the opportunity. I felt irritated when she said; I have written my name wrongly.

If I was in your position, I will also feel angry on the staff. But we cant react more, as we have to still depend on them to get it corrected.
But what to say, in our Nation this happens lot.
Making a mistake by the staff and blaming you for that mistake, that is really bad..
But even if you were in Kerala, this may have happened, no matter which part of the country you live.
I Have also faced same issue with my account. my name was correct in bank account but was misspelled in ATM card, and when I contacted the bank manager of SBI he told, that name doesn't matter for ATM, go ahead, it cant be corrected. But I withdrew all money from that account and started new account in another bank..
And my brothers name, Ramaswamy was written as Ramalekshmi in Ration card. But they left the gender as male. And my mother spend a lot of time to correct that, still after correction, he is not having initial with his name in the ration card.
But my name is just above his name and my name is correct and I am having initial..
By the way is the school a government school or private school?
You can feel happy that at least they agreed to give a new TC with corrected name..

Hello Venkit,
First they said that it is me written the name wrongly in their records, second they asked me to come again another working day, I really got annoyed, I said I can’t come again (I have to take another permission from office to go and correct this) then she said, she can’t go and check the register at the moment as she is dealing with TC and parents may keep on coming. There my husband interfered and agreed to come again then she told me she will call me and inform how my name recorded in the register. Later she informed me on phone, I am right, she can issue a new TC with corrected name.
Ramaswamy and Ramalekshmi, there is much difference in both name, I don’t know how they can make such a big mistake.
The school is a private school and that is the reason we got the new TC quickly.

Hello venkit,
I too thought the same, since the school is changing and I can correct the name here itself (this is a primary school) it will be good. Otherwise I may face more difficulties.
Yes, that may be the possibility, then also 'Rajaleskshmi' wont be a male, it is a matter of common sense.
Now I remember one incident in last summer vacation, we were travelling to Kerala in train, some other families were also with us. The other two familys booked their tickets together. The name of one person was 'Biju', as you know it is a male name but in ticket the gender was written as 'F' instead of 'M'. They have not checked this in the ticket earlier, they filled the form correctly and mentioned it 'M' rightly. When the ticket examiner came on checking the people with tickets he asked who is Biju, Biju, quickly replied, I am Biju. The examiner look on the ticket then look on him, he did this repeatedly, and then Biju felt something wrong. The examiner said, it is written as 'F' and it is an offence travelling a male in place of female. He asked fine for this offence.... finally talking long time with him, seeing the little kids... the examiner agreed to travel without fine by giving a warning. Next time, check your ticket before leaving the counter.

So you spend lot of time behind the TC, at least be happy that you got it right..
If it was a government school, you would not have got the new TC.
It's good that you corrected it now itself, otherwise it will bring more problems in future..
And My brothers name is Ramaswamy and mother's name is Rajalekshmi, probably, they may have mixed the name and gave my brother a new name..
Have a nice day..

Hi Sree
Hope its okay to post short here..
I am glad that for me it never happened that my name wrote it with some mistake officially... But my dad faced this thing. But then he made the changes with the process.
Really its not feel well when we see misspelled our name. And specially in the case you mentioned..
I got my voting card with wrong birth date.. So, give it back with request for correcting it.. And you know next time I got it back with some other incorrect date.

Hello Anand,
That is the accuracy of our officials. In my Voting I card my father’s name is wrongly written, I took sometimes to read the name written in it.
Here, the school officials sent a form before two months to write the name of the child and parent’s name again so that there won’t be any mistake in TC. We filled the form correctly and sent to the school, then also they written my name wrongly and blaming me for the mistake. Today she admitted her mistake and ready to re-write the TC.
Thank you so much for your quick reply.

My name is miss pelt in my voter id and this has been causing a lot of problem to me.Last year I had to ravel by plane and I had to show my pan card there as they pointed to me that the name on my voter id did not match the name that I had written.Changing the spelling of my name on my voter id would follow a long and tiring process and I am not prepared for it.So now I show my pan card everywhere it is necessary.

I feel like saying "Wow, you mean to tell me that you really don't know how to spell my name when it isn't even that hard to spell."
Every time I go to Starbucks, I have to tell the Baristas how to spell my name because they never know how to spell it correctly, and I usually feel like I shouldn't have to do this because my real name is not that hard to spell and it's very common.

My name in my country is very common, that's why I say that. My name is common in most of European and American culture. If people have trouble spelling my name, then I begin to wonder where they are from because my name is so common, but somehow people still end up misspelling my name, and I often don't understand it.

If I say like that then it may be rude. I must accept my name is not familiar in this place. I become annoyed when she said that I spelled my name wrongly, which never happen. (If I can't spell my name correctly what is the use of my education).
Finally they have issued a fresh TC with the corrected name.

Hi Sree!
Welcome back after a long time. I thought you were too busy with school authorities and may be with office work to come and join us on mylot.
You had every right to get angry with the school authorities on their folly/mistake. Thank God! they realised that the mistake was on their part, not on your part and agreed to correct it.
Yes, it really feels bad when our name is misspelled. I really feel very bad when someone write my name wrongly, though mine is very simple.
I have noted while writing in Hindi, many use small 'e' (matra), when it should be longer 'e'.
In English also, many mis-spell my name as 'Dipak', instead of 'Deepak', which I do not appreciate.
Hope you are doing fine. All the best.

Good to hear it was corrected. Once. my name was written wrong in my graduation certificate, not only name but also my birth year... their reasoning is that I have a very difficult name to spell (Jenny is my real name and they wrote it Jeny) and because I was too young to graduate from the school (I was two years younger than my classmates)... ho ho... who decided it?
It takes me almost a year to have it changed, so be glad you only needs a couple of weeks to have it fixed.

Hello Jenny,
ha ha so you started your schooling very early (as you are younger than your class mates). The authority wanted your age equal to class mates, not a bad idea but why you become older than you actually (they can' decide it themselves). It is frustrating to know it took almost one year to correct it.
Here they took only couple of days.

Thanks for sharing in details; i am not surprised at all, here we write Sri, in north India they write Shree, similarly people usually write different spellings, for example we write 'prasdad' you write 'prasadam', am i right?

Dear Maa,
Yes the pronunciations are different in state to state with the same things. 'Prasadam' is the malayalam word infact. In South we write 'Sree'.
That is not the case here, we have spelled it correctly to the school people, and they should have followed the same spelling which we have written in forms. May be they used with other spellings.
