I can't believe he'd cause himself so much pain just to get out of being employed. I think if anything instead of getting disability for a physical impairment it may be for his mental issues. We all have had jobs we hate going to ect... but I've never thought about lopping off my foot. What have you done to get out of work? Or known someone to do to get out of having to work?

Hi 3SnuggleBunnies
The weirdest one I came across was this guy who cut off his thumb of the right hand just because he wanted to quit the Army. He never wanted to join at the first place, but was forced as his family has been involved with working in the Army since generations. So he was left with no choice but join. He underwent the complete training, even was called and involved in a war, but then he felt he was a misfit. As war was on, he couldnt resign. So he chipped off his right thumb as that would render him useless for the army and he would be released of duty. Today, he works as a computer engineer at a local MNC.
Personally, I always love my job as a Teacher and never thought to quit unless I was sure that I wasnt fitting in the job (mostly due to lobbying and pleasing the managers - I am worst at it even today). And in all cases, I always found myself another job, handed out the resignation letter citing the facts and my determination to quit.

I don't think I would consider doing something stupid like that just to get disability. I cherish my ability to walk too much to think about doing that. This guy must have been totally crazy to think he had to do that to get out of working.

There are people out there that never cease to amaze me. I can not imagine hating something so much that I would injure myself in any manner, much less like that. I have known people that would lie like dogs to get out of work or cover their call-ins. I haven't known anyone to do something to themselves physically but I would be mentally distraught if I had to keep up with some of the lies that I have known people to tell.

Well, I know from knowing many people that have had to go through long battles in order to be able to get the disability that they should have gotten that it is not at all easy to get disability approved. With that said, I don't think that I would ever be able to intentionally risk life or limb so that I would be able to get disability in order to support my family.
With that said, I think that this man should be denied his disability claim since he himself caused the injury unto himself.

I myself have never done anything to impair or impede myself from working. I understand the stress involved when dealing with the general public and that some people cannot undergo that kind of duress. There are options for everyone, from working on the phone, to driving jobs, to staying at home and working. There is always an option. People just need to look.

I know a lot of people who will do some pretty extreme and crazy things just to get disability and doctors, insurance companies and the government are catching up to them. I even know people who are truly disabled and who have real disabilities, but the doctors will dismiss them because they don't know if they are really disabled or if they are just faking it.

You read my mind. I was just on my way to read this. I started reading stuff aftr reading the one about the Danish lotto mistake. I can't believe the things that some people will do to get away from the workforce. That must have really hurt.

I'd lop off someone else's foot before I'd take off my own. For some reason this made me think of a friend of my late grandfathers. He was a missionary, but had served in the Army during a war and worked for a while in the medical unit. Well, he was constantly getting an ingrown toenail in one particular toe. He got so sick of it that one day he sawed off the toe that kept giving him the problem.
