In Spanish, my native language, house (the word) is female and cars are males. It has always been alright with me as when my husband was alive I said "my house" and "your car". I rather wanted to be the owner of the house than to be the owner of the car.I have never named a house but I have named several cars.

The garage was all his though, so he could put "his" car and all of his junk.. But it´s bunny thinking about genre for things. There´s a common joke in Spanish about computers. They are called both as feminine or mascukline nouns. Some people give them atributions as if they behaved as men or women

My house is absolutly female. But I still have problems with the male garage. It´s full of men´s junk and I don´t know what to do with it. That is surely a male room (el garage instead of la casa). See? I´m teaching you some Spanish so you can talk with your inlaws later.

I think it would be male. We live in a ranch styled house. I do know that some really nice people live in this house and I stop here everyday to visit.
Best Wishes!

People tend to be attached to certain stuff that they give it a gender and a name per se. These things are very important to us maybe because of a sentimental reason, value, or the aesthetic itself. Giving it a name or gender provides us with a security blanket that would help us sometimes care for them and love them just like humans.
