My First Foster Ever

So, I am fostering my first animal (a dog) and I am in love!!! Her name is Tinkerbell, she's a chihuahua mix, a little over a year old. I'm fostering her because she has a behavior issue that is making it hard to get her adopted out, and I'm working on that with her. She's doing better and I think she'll make a "full recovery" before I know it. And even though I do love her myself, I can not wait until she gets adopted, she's a great little dog and deserves a good home. Have any of you ever fostered? Are you a current foster? What are your experiences?

I've never fostered (always wanted to) and I plan on doing so once I'm in my own place but I've heard it's such a rewarding experience. A friend of mine and her husband started fostering about 10 months and just recently received their 100th foster dog. They couldn't be happier. They post their fosters on Facebook and I don't think they keep a dog for more than about 3 weeks, they get adopted so fast. Just make sure that you're constantly addressing her behavioral issues and documenting her progress. Also introduce her to new things and get her socialized to as much as possible while she's with you. This is very important when it comes to getting a dog adopted. Keep us posted on her time with you!

100 foster dogs in 10 months!?!?!??! Wow!!!!!! And they got them all adopted?? That's incredible!!! Good for them. Tinkerbell is my first, and will probably be my only, foster for a while. I'm still living at home with family while I'm in school, and I was lucky my parents agreed to let me take her in. Tinkerbell's only issue is she is she snaps at strangers and dogs that are larger than her (something I discovered after I brought her home-we have 3 big dogs lol). She snaps out of fear, not aggression, and she is getting much better!!! She plays with my lab/great dane mix, and runs with him. But she'll still occasionally snap at any of my 3 dogs if they get too close to her (especially when she's eating). Other than her snapping issue she is a great little dog. She has great manners (she'll sit in my lap while I eat and not try to take my food) and she is potty trained. The only problem in that area is she doesn't quite know how to ask to go out, but as long as I let her out enough times, she doesn't have any accidents. She is good with cats, and I think she'll learn to be good with any dogs just given the time-she is living peacefully enough with my dogs. And she is a HUGE cuddler, wants to lay next to me wherever I am. And I think best of all (in terms of getting adopted) is that she can be left home alone and won't destroy anything. I think the longest I've left her is 4 hours, and my room was intact when I got home! lol

Dozing with Toy - My foster dog, Tinkerbell, falling asleep with a toy in her mouth.
I thought I should add a picture of Tinkerbell so you guys can picture a face with all the information I'm giving you on her! lol This is a really cute picture of her dozing off with a toy in her mouth, and the next picture I got of her she was all the way asleep with the toy in her arms. But I think the dozing one is cuter, so that's the 1 I'll share.

Animal home shelters are now common and popular for animal lovers. I have never fostered a pet before but I do appreciate your love and care for them. It is definitely hard for one to raise a pet and requires time and patience. An animal"s behavior can be modifiec with proper care and assistance.

You're right about modifying behavior. When I got Tinkerbell she would bite at anyone that tried to touch her. She would even run and bite at people who would try to pet other dogs that were in the same pen as her. Now she doesn't bite anymore, sometimes she still barks at people, but never bites. She's even let 2 different children pet her! Which is amazing! Thank you Honest!

I never have, but my sister has. She fosters daschunds. I don't think I could do it, since they are so cute and loveable I don't think I'd be able to let them go. Any animal that would come into my house, I'd want to keep. :)

I'm like you danish, but there are a couple things I keep telling myself that helps with that. 1) While it would be hard to give up a pet to a shelter or rescue, giving a pet you've fostered to a new loving home would make it easier. 2) The more animals I foster and adopt out, the more animals I can take in and the longer I can save more lives.

Honestly, all my fosters have pretty much stayed - I have taken in a few that were surrendered, but I've had to put a stop to all but the most critical cases, I need to reduce my numbers (I'm not getting any younger!)

I guess fostering is easier for me because i don't have the option to keep mine (therefore I don't have to worry about being to overloaded). Haha

Bless your little heart! I couldn't do it and end up giving the little critter away to someone. I'd probably fall in love with every one of the animals, so this isn't a good idea for me. My cats have all been rescue cats though, so I feel good about that. I hope your little Tinkerbell works out for someone. She just sounds so cute and lovable...maybe she'd be better off with just one person who has no other pets around the house, or kids. Just keep doing what you're doing and hopefully all will work out. Good luck hon!

Yeah I am in love with Tinkerbell, but the fact that she'll be going to a home make it easier to give her up. Tinkerbell is actually good with dogs her own size (but judging how well she is with my dogs, I think she could live with any size dog) and she's good with 1 of my cats. So I don't think she has to be the only pet. She might actually like having another small animal in the household to play with and could keep her company when the people aren't home. Thank you Kash!!!!

we have adopted a cat few years back, she was still young then. She was lost and she usually visits our house to ask fr food. We eventually adopted her and let her inside our house. We named her mangming and it has been four years since she stumbled in our place.

My family is feeding some stray cats right now. But they are ferral so they won't let us near them. They just recently showed up with kittens! We want to try and trap them so we can get them fixed. We have managed to catch 1 cat and get him neutered, but that was a while ago! I don't want these cats to have a bunch of babies!
