Can using the computer affect your intelligence?

Hey everyone!
Quite a few people have been wondering about this for a while now, and possibly many more have been doing the same for much longer in the case of the television.
Computers emit radiation just like Television screens do, and many believe that these radiations are harmful for not only human eyes, but for the brain as well.
There are others, who may or may not support this theory, but believe that the inertia involved in using a computer is dangerous, because the blood flow throughout the body is much less than normal. This supposedly starves the brain of oxygen and other essential nutrients, thus resulting in reduced intelligence.
Do you think there is any validity to these claims? Have you had experiences which prove or disprove such speculation?

I have heard about this, but I don't think the threat is as prevalent as some make it out to be. First of all, TV and computer monitors used to be CRT type, and they used kilo-voltage to move electrons from the cathode to the anode (the screen). One of the by-products of accelerating electrons with Kv is radiation. Most people use LCD screens now, and they don't have Kv generators, they use a back light that is either a CCD or LED, which is low voltage, and an array of transistors to open/close the light path, and display color.
But that is not the only radiation we have to worry about, that produces ionizing radiation that penetrates the skin, the more worrisome radiation is low level and completely absorbed, and we cannot escape that unless we never go outside when the sun is up. My wife has some UV beads that she got from a teachers in-service. They are attached to her keys and they are white when not exposed to UV radiation. They turn purple even on cloudy days, but they do not change at all in front of our TV or computer monitors.
The other thing is that radiation follows the inverse-square law, so if you double the distance from the source, you reduce by a factor of 4 the amount of radiation you receive. Since TVs are now large screen the viewer sits much farther away from them.
In reality I don't fret much about all these studies that say this or that is bad for you. I say Life is Hazardous to your Health, and we all have to pass on sometime. I don't want to be that person on the autopsy table, that the pathologist comments that I have really clean arteries, no organ damage from "bad" things, while the other pathologist says, that was great, but that 3000lb car that hit him didn't seem to care about any of that.

Wow, you really have a lot of knowledge on the subject!
"Life is hazardous to health"? Haha, that is a good one, being both humorous and intelligent simultaneously. Did you come up with it all by yourself?
UV Beads sound interesting. Maybe I should try to get a few from somewhere.
You're right, you can't live life if you're on your toes worrying about whether this or that affects your health all the time.
Thanks for sharing all that info with us!!

Hi Vvance,
My primary degree is in radiology, and if you heard some of the things we studied and how radiation affects us, you might be surprised.
As far as the "Life is Hazardous to Your Health, I have not seen that anywhere before, so I may have been the one to coin it.
I can understand certain measures, like don't walk in front of speeding trains, cars or bullets, and probably don't eat the yellow snow goes in there somewhere, but that's about it.

Hi jjzone,
You're a radiologist? Nice!!
Well, I would be fascinated to know a bit more about radiation, that's for sure! I've always been a proponent of expanding the horizons of one's knowledge, and this area of expertise is definitely one of the more mysterious.
Good for you!
Thanks again for shedding more light on the topic! It always helps to have an expert's opinion!

Staring at a screen all day cannot be good for the body. How it affects the mind i do not know. However, I've noticed a state of sort of suspended animation come over people when they've been on the computer for a long time. Perhaps if you are like this too regularly your brain finds it harder to snap back to normal?

Indeed it would seem logical. However I think it works more in one direction than the other. Emotional wrecks show physical symptoms quite commonly, but those with severe physical health problems do not necessarily show emotional ones.
So no, I don't agree that it would affect intelligence simply because it is bad for the body.
I don't think it is intelligence that excess computer use effects, but more the ability of the individual to interact in the real world. You could call this social intelligence I suppose. A zombie lacks it, as does someone who has become so tied up with their computer game that they can't reconnect with reality.

Haha, that phrase sounds funny!! 'Suspended animation'!! It's almost as if they've turned into zombies or something.
I think, since you agree that it is bad for the body, you would also agree that it affects the mind somehow, because mind and body are connected, aren't they? You said in your post Emotional vs physical health that your emotions caused physical manifestations. So this would also make sense, wouldn't it?

I would say that using the computer will effect your intelligence in a positive way, because it makes us concentrate our mind. Even playing game can do this. I don't play computer games, other than the health Wii sort of games, and it does involved concentration, which has to be good. _Derek

Hi derek,
Thanks for your comment.
You're right, people don't ever seem to talk about the benefits of such activities! Concentration is very healthy for the mind, and it has to be a little bit positive, at the least.
But what is your opinion about its negative effects?

i don’t know much about these claims, but I could talk about my experience. I am an IT professional and I work for many hours on computers. And I feel now a decrease in efficiency and concentration of my mind power. I also feel that I forgets things frequently and for this I am not too old as I am 30 years old. I think I am not enough good as others who does not work much on computers.

I think as per my brain reports that some people will call a Binet intelligence test my intelligence has increased by 27% after using the internet for six months. It should not be the screens that are lowering the human intelligence. The studies are true but limited with some people only as the researches are mostly carried over on a very few percentage of the flock. Plus thousands of such researches are added every year. But the relevancy and effectiveness to broad is low which decreases their reliability and validity. Human intelligence is a much greater aspect or field of study and there are thousands of biological and empirical variables that determines or constitutes it.
So in my case when it was 195 six months before.
It should have reached to 252 by now.
Just kidding. Hahahaha

Some people already told me about that. For now,I still cannot answer it.For all I know ,using computers has a lot of help in increasing our intelligence because this one mode of information. People who are computer dependent has a lot of knowledge because they are already immune in this technology.

I don't know about the radiation, but I suspect it has some effect on the brain as well as the rest of the body. I think that sitting in front of the computer or the TV for hours on end is more dangerous. The human body was meant to move, not just sit. It's true that less oxygen circulates through the body with inactivity, but that's not all there is to it. Muscles atrophy, balance declines, lung capacity declines, eyes can be damaged, etc. That should be enough to get us up and moving!

There are so many things to do on the computer. To say it effects my intelligence, I doubt it. If anything it improves my vocabulary and learning ability. I don't sit here for hours on end. I do move around and do other chores in the house such as laundry while I am on the computer. I do know my eye doctor told me that continuous staring at the screen can cause eye strain. We don't blink as much while reading or doing other things on the computer for long periods of time. But to say my brain is starved of oxygen, I really don't know. Good discussion.

well, my grandmother always said stuff like that, she would say dont sit too close to the tv or your eyes will go bad... and one time she said something about eyeliner, back then i was young and just laughed it off.. but to this day i wont let my grandkid sit too close to the tv, so im not sure if there is any truth to this stuff or not.. but have always heard there was.. but as far as the interent i think if it was gonna hurt people it would have already done it as much as people are online i know im on it every day.. for long periods of time and it has not hurt me .. so i dont know..

I am not so sure about it. It may affect our health or whatsoever but in what ways and why we don't know. I am sure anything we do if we use and do it too much it will no good for us. So anything it might be do and use it in moderate way. That is the safest way I can think for myself.(^^)

Not only computers, every manmade things in the world are harmful for human. But, we people are addicted with these technologies and couldn't even imagine a kind of life without science inventions. My job is fully based on sitting in front of the computer for almost 15 hours per day. I am often facing heat wounds inside the eyes but not in a position to avoid using computers. Every time, i go to the doctor, he advises me to intake more water. I am just following it that's all my friend.

I have no idea about radiation etc,but I know one thing. The more you use your mind the more it gets sharp. If you use your mind to solve a mathematical problem, you have to think over it a lot.Your mind gets sharp.Electronic gadgets don't allow you to use your mind. They provide you a ready made answer. Thus you are deprived of a chance to sharpen your intelligence.

it is likely that it will affect your btain but the more it will affect your knowledge base
on the way you are using your conputer. if your using it in a negative way the outcome will also be negative..and if
on a postive way it will benefit to you.

Well, I of these things you wrote, I can not prove the authenticity of true, because I never made ??inquiries about the topic.
One thing though I had explained about 20 years ago by my teacher of middle school.
The once had a computer monitor CRT, (but today have all been replaced by flat screen). These tubes effectively emitted radiation "gamma" that, even if of low intensity, them is accumulated over time. This accumulation of radiation precisely, to me was told that it was harmful to health.
Other things related to harmful substances emanating from computers, at the moment I'm not in consciousness. Given, however, your cue, I want to know better.

I do believe that. If you are too much on the computer or in front of the T.v you feel like your brain is somehow going to sleep, your brain slowdown in any ways, and you have to get out of that kind of fog that it produce to be able to be creative with your hands.

Even though what you said is true, i think there will be very little effect, because now-a-days who are not sitting before the computer? Even children started to sit before the computer for more than 3hrs daily.
But the time for children has to be limited by their parents, taking their eye-sight and health into concern.
I my self sit about 8 hours before the computer, I never felt nothing like that.
