I hope this can help.In pronouncing "R",roll your tongue up to your palette while in pronouncing "L",put your tongue between your teeth.I show that to my Japanese students & they're learning how to do it right.I'm an English tutor to them btw. :)

For L,bite your tongue at bit.For R,roll your tongue up to your pallet & make the sound. If you have skype,I can show you how it's done.

hi there, i have two cousins having the same problem as you, they can't pronounce the letter R. i think there is something wrong with their tongue or something like that. it can be a speech defect too. but i think this can also be overcome with the help of a therapist or continuous exercise, like keep on saying words with the letter R over and over again. maybe that can help you and also see if there is difference or something

I guess the cheapest solution that I can think of right now is to practice. Because I can't afford to pay a therapist and its not 100% sure that I can pronounce letter "R" if I enroll for speech therapist. I guess I will just going to give up hoping that I will work in a call center. Because no matter what I want to do. I can have an english accent as I already practice that. But with out an "R" its really hard to find work in call center. Unless of course if theirs a call center who want british accent. lols.

hahah you're too funny. but i guess you also should work on your grammar. call centers are very strict when it comes to the grammar and being spontaneous. i have a British uncle and cousins and the "R" is still well articulated.

Don't worry, no one is going to pay attention whether you can pronouce letter "R" or "L" correctly or not, anyway, most of the callers from US can not understand what the heck is those oversea call center workers are talking about majority of the time when they call in for assistance, those foreign accented workers hired by American company that are tasked with providing customer services are way too difficult to understand with or without the letter "R" in their pronounciation.

Then I guess that company that is hiring foreign call centers are not from our country but from other countries that don't speak english. Because in our country we speak english as common language. Usually does who have accent are does who only learned english. The Philippines was been U.S. colony for 50 years. And our english can be good as guam and hawaii.

And I'm hoping that its free. lols. Yeah its really frustrating because I only need are "R" to find a job. Actually almost all of the job that I applied pass because I have a good grade in written exam. One problem though is that I have hard time when its come to interview because of my speech.

Hello bulastika, I would suggest you to learn phonetic. When I were in university, I were required to take Phonetic courses. Trust me, once you are able to understand it, I can guarantee you that you will find no problem in speaking any english words in the world.

Theirs no phonetic course in my country. And I guess I'm just too old to start schooling again. What I need right now is to find a job. Although the best job that I can find right now is in call center. the only problem I have is learning how to pronounce letter "R".

Hi bulastika. Is it really that bad? I mean, I used to do final interviews for applicants for a sales team, but I'm rather lenient with speech lapses. Well, of course, so long as I can still understand them, and they're able to get the message accross, that should work. Call centers nowadays, can't afford to be too strict, because of competition and high turn over. Did you even try applying?

Okay. Try to do an experiment. Lets your friend interview 10 person that you don't know. Then let your friend grade them according to their answer. Now you try to interview them too. But you must use the same question as your friend and they must answer the same answer except this time they remove the "r". except for the three who got the lowest score. Then grade them too. I'm sure those three lowest score will get three high score to you.

hi there! when you apply for a call center job, before they will let you receive and answer calls there is this training program available for every successful applicant. This training involves language training and product specialization training too. Some call center companies give trainings for free and with allowance if you pass those trainings then its your chance to be hired and be a call center agent.I know so because I use to work in a call center company it's rewarding and at the same time a challenging work.so goodluck and see you around!! :)

That's why I want to work in a call center also. Problem is that I can't pass the interview simply because I can't pronounce letter "R" and my confidence drop every time they keep asking me to repeat letter "R". I know I can do it in call center. Its my dream to work in call center. The only problem is that I can't pronounce letter "R".

hi there bulastika... well, that's odd, i had a school subject before called "mandarin" so basically we tried to learn pinyin and i think there are "r" sounds there like sunday ( xingqi ri )... when i saw your discussion, i suddenly remembered that Japanese are also having a hard time pronouncing 'L'.. and they make those 'L' sounds as R... maybe you should try reading books aloud or read tongue twisters full with 'r' sounds... i know how frustrating that is, coz my brother when he was younger he can't pronounce the 's' sound so all 's' are then turned by him into 't' sounds.. Anyways, have a nice day!

Although I'm Chinese I don't know how to speak chinese. My sisters do know how to speak cantonese. My niece can speak both cantonese, fukien and mandarin. Its maybe I don't look chinese that's why. I'm brown unlike my sisters that are chinese in complication. My grand father a chinese migrant has a filipina wife. So I guess I get all the physic from my grandma side and the only thing that I get from chinese blood is that I can't pronounce letter "R".

When I read the title of your discussion, what crossed my mind is that you're chinese which turned out to be true or at least partly. But I don't think it's inherent for the chinese not to pronounce R properly but rather the lack of R letter in chinese words that caused the difficulty in pronouncing it. There are chinese, or those whose mother and father are chinese who don't have problems pronouncing the letter R properly. The only solution I can think of is for you to practice, practice and more practice.

I don't speak chinese! So I'm sure its not because of lack of "R" in chinese words. Although my older sisters do since they study in chinese school. I'm the only one who don't since by the time I was born we are financially down. I do practice pronouncing "R". But how can I practice something that I can't pronounce in the first place.

Keep on practice with your tongue, no one can help you, it is all up to yourself to make it work. Practice with those "R" words, like "right", "raft", "rite", etc..... Believe in yourself, and believe that you can do it. Nothing can't be done, it is a matter whether you want to stumble down this problem or not. Good luck!

Actually if I say "R"ight, "R"aft, its some how understandable. What I can't pronounce really is when "R" is the last vowel in a word. Like war, Its going to sound like waahh.. So its like I can pronounce raaahhh...but I can't pronounce aaarrrr. its will sound like aaahhh. Its maybe because in rahhh.. the "R" sound only once follow by aaahh. lols.

Hi, i don't know, maybe you try always to mention the r.I have also the brother that when he speak with H in sentence,he will not speak with h word.Let's say, hello ,and he will say say ello.so i don't know maybe try it..

I really don't understand why some one can't say the letter "H". lols. Because for me if he can speak "R" then he can speak "H" because its easy to pronounce "H" than "R" but I guess each of us has some defect or something. But I guess with proper check up and therapy theirs a solution.
