Old computer but I don't know what to do with it

March 31, 2012 2:51pm CST
Hi guys So I've got this old computer, it pretty much is just building space in the middle of my room doing nothing handy, does anyone have any ideas what I can use it for? I was thinking of a file-backup host PC that stores the other files from other computers, but does anyone have any better ideas?

Have you tried installing some lightweight distros in it? I have used Puppy Linux in a couple of old pcs and I have to say that they were going pretty good. You can search for it at distrowatch.com. There are also other lightweight distros that I haven't used yet like Xubuntu, Macpup Linux, Lubuntu or Slitaz. You can try them too. Hope it helps :)

Thanks for the suggestions, I will probably do this and have it perhaps run a Linux server :)

How old is your pc? I remember I booted it from a usb flash in Pentium4 single core 1.6 Ghz with 1GB ram and it ran flawlessly. If it is equal or higher I don't think you'll have any problems using it.

it was made in 1996 but its been upgraded since then it has 384MB of RAM with a 1.2GHZ Processor, but Linux Puppy is light.

Sadly I do not own the place we live in so I don't think we'd be able to screw it to the ceiling and I wouldn't see much point into it but humor, thanks for the response!

It all depends on how old it is. Even if it is only a few years old, an external hard drive would probably be a better way to go for file backup. Here in my town in the U.S. the city periodically has a time and place to recycle old computers. Of course another option might be to sale it or trade it for some work you are having done around around the house; I have done both of those in the past. I will admit that I currently have an old computer that I use occasionally because there was no software available for my new computer for my scanner and I didn't want to buy a new scanner. The old computer also has some software on it that is not available for my new computer that I want to use sometimes. To save money and space I didn't get a new monitor when I got my new computer but kept the old one. I got a KVM switch that allows me to switch the monitor and mouse from one computer to the other and this has worked out well.

I wanted to get a KVM switch, but my computer store doesn't sell them so that annoys me, I will probably get one from Amazon or Ebay though, thanks for the response!

better way to sell the old computer and get a new laptop. Now a day all the new system is getting cheap.

Yes you could certainly use it for backup purposes however if it is so old then it may prove to be unreliable at some point. I don't know if you know anything about building or taking apart PCs but you could salvage the working parts from inside and keep them as spares i.e. the memory, hard drives, cd rom drive, cables etc. The other option is you could try and sell it on ebay but it's virtually a guarantee that you would not get much for it as computer technology is changing all the time. Whatever your decision I wish you luck. Andrew

I have opened this computer up before and yes I know how to build and take apart a computer, I could consider this but all the drive connectors are IDE, but I'm pretty sure there is a IDE to SATA converter, thanks for the response!

I would donate your computer. It can be refurbished and given to someone in need. I hope that helps. Have a great weekend!

I have old computer too that I do not use much. I want to upgrade it if I have enough money. As of now, I have my netbook which my ex-bf gave to me. It is good. I have been using this for more than a year now. My sisters wants a laptop more than a desktop computer because a laptop is mobile. I really don't know what I am going with my old computer. My monitor is still in good condition. The only problem is the other one. Perhaps, I will just sell the parts that are okay.

LOL, I have this computer that has been sitting on the table next to me new one for years, dusting away. I never use it for anything, it just sits there. Actually, I think that computers gone now, I'm not sure, lol. I haven't seen it for weeks so maybe my dad through it away or something. You can always sell it's parts, or just sell it as a whole, give it away, use it as decoration? LOL. There's not much actually. By the way, I like your Pikachu avatar xD

I guess I could sell it, quick and easy money, thanks for the reply, and thanks for the compliment on my avatar :D
