I absolutely adore volunteering! It's a great way to be active, along with doing good for the benefit of others. Also, volunteering as a student, shows older people in the community that all the youth isn't bad or wasn't raised wrong. I can not speak for those younger than me, but I can say that after the class of 2012 graduates this year, I don't think adults will see a lot of well manner youth as the majority anymore. Especially me being categorized as the minority. I am mixed, and african americans already are given a bad name. No I don't look mixed, but when people see me the first thing they assume is that I am african american. It doesn't matter to me though, they don't ask so maybe it's good for them to know that the minority is not bad or disgraceful, well not all of it at least. I plan on volunteering until I can't volunteer anymore!

To jricky1: Actually I was thinking of doing Missionary work. That way I'm not tied to the Government and all I have to do is help people without worrying about if the Government is ever going to send me home on time. I plan to study abroad in college, so that I get a feel of a foreign country. I'm pretty sure they have similar problems to what happens here in America, such as disabled children. I love helping them because it gets tiring for them to be around their own. They have a life to live to!
To wittynet: Yeah it sucks. When people do find out I'm mixed I tend to get picked on or ask stupid questions. My favorite one is "Where do I fit in?" My school at lunch tends to segregate by race, class, academics, clubs, cliques, etc. It's horrible. I love being a people person in general and it hurts for people to think that I have to fit in. Ever heard of originality?

It really is cool. I was a volunteer for several Comic Conventions and several events in general and you really do get so much out of them. Experience and sometimes, free stuff.

I volunteer planting trees around the city in areas where they have been destroyed by disease or deforestation. It feels good being able to help others out, and it gives me a chance to see other neighborhoods as I have never seen them before. I also like trees, being able to sit outside in the shade as opposed to being indoors or baking under the sun. At the same time, some of the other people like it when I am there to help because I am the big boy, and I apparently bring the muscle to the team. I don't mind the heavy lifting, that's what the muscle is there for, and I like moving heavy stuff. I feel appreciated as opposed to when I was bringing the muscle to work, and it was abuse and exploitation because they knew I could do it.

Hello, jricky1! I love this topic. I have been always dreaming of volunteering to teach kids abroad. The problem is I am not yet financially stable. As much as I would like to pursue my dreams, I cannot. I understand that there is also an allowance given to volunteers, but I can't shoulder all the expenses in fixing all the documents needed. I still see this as a dream which I can achieve in the future.
