If you have Vista or Windows 7, you can use Speech Recognition to dictate in, for example, WordPad: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/Dictate-text-using-Speech-Recognition (Look in Control Panel for Speech Recognition). The best commercial software is undoubtedly Dragon Naturally Speaking but, of course, you have to buy it. How effective any software is depends greatly on the quality of your microphone, whether you have a quiet place to work in and how consistently and clearly you can speak. You will need to spend some time with the software both teaching yourself how it behaves and (with Dragon) teaching the software to recognise your pronunciation and voice patterns. Some people find it useful but many cannot get along with it.

You can read about Dragon Naturally Speaking here: http://www.nuance.com/dragon/index.htm I don't know of any free programs apart from the one that comes with Vista and Win 7. I doubt very much that anyone could improve on that for free.
